Selenite Veins in the California Desert | Rockhounding Near Las Vegas

  • It isn’t easy to find rockhounding spots near LA, but there’s plenty near Barstow! I head out of Los Angeles after visiting family to search Mule Canyon for gypsum.
I have some trouble naming my finds in this one, so if you have any insight - help me out in the comments! Evaporites like gypsum aren’t common in the Midwest, so I’m a rookie.
Note: All finds filmed on public land, but not all of Mule Canyon is public. Please use a land ownership app of your choosing to ensure you’re good to collect!

Hey there, Griffin. Pretty cool video. You’re getting into some wild exploring. Be careful out there. With the sliding around and loose rocks. The shooters out there usually stick to themselves and normally respect other people space. That said, if you’re in an area and you hear a lot of gunfire and are finding targets all over the place, you may want to wear bright orange vest or shirt and hat. The shooters may not know there is someone else in the field. If you have a firearm of your own it’s sometimes wise to fire off a shot or 2 into a hill or something. And then they will know there’s someone else on the field. The issues come from stray bullets flying in from far away. Just be careful and aware my friend. A lot of folks go out into the desert and do their thing when it’s cool like this. By the way, Lavic Siding is close by where you were. 💎

Oh, I believe the ‘clearer’ stuff you were finding is specimen selenite. 💎

And you were right. A type of Gypsum

Jasper! Thanks for this, there’s a lot of depth here. As far as safety goes… the guys shooting ended up being about 1/2 mile down the road, shooting into a small mini-canyon of sorts.
The area I was in was fully enclosed amd I was the only one around.
But otherwise, yep - I think selenite is what I found out there!

Hello from Hurricane, Utah. Lots of selenite here, and tons of other things. I usually hunt for agatized wood though. Super pretty material for lapidary fun. I just found your channel and i like it. happy travels!

Aw man, I didn’t know there was agatized wood around Hurricane. I spent 3 days there before hiking Zion. Did a lot of skating on those nice trails by the virgin river.
      It’s a top 3 most beautiful place I’ve been through - I’m envious! Thanks for watching 😎

Sweet video man, its wicked to see how the gypsum and selenite crystals form differently in different parts of the world, im headead into a local 1km deep gypsum cave/mine Saturday going to film it all maybe ill see similar clusters!

There are half a dozen spots with lapidary quality material in Mule Canyon. Yellow jasper, petrified wood, petrified palm, some agate, banded jasper. You were actually standing just in front of a great spot. You should reach out to some of the locals before you head out so you don't miss out.

    • @ThirdPlanetRocks
      @ThirdPlanetRocks  ปีที่แล้ว

I’d love to, and try to research from locals when I’m near home. However, I edit these and post them on a delay.
So when you see the videos go up, I’m not near the spot anymore unfortunately

The 2nd hard green rock you found is serpentine.and I’m assuming serpentinite is what made that tuff green. Keep doing your thing Griff

    • @ThirdPlanetRocks

Thanks for keeping up with the channel! I think that definitely could’ve been serpentine.
