  • I am hoping this is my best work yet. This is an incredibly special rockhounding spot near Las Vegas. It’s actually barely in California, but there’s some breathtaking material here.
    Enjoy while I take you through high winds, dense brush, and a rainstorm in order to get our hands on amethyst, quartz, and possibly even citrine! (Let me know your thoughts on that in the comments)
    Credit for showing the spot goes to ‪@solomonsoutdooradventures‬his geology rundown of the area is far better than anything I could provide about this place myself.
    Hope you all enjoy - LOCATION INFO THROUGHOUT WITH MAPS AT THE END!

    I was just in that area the other day looking for a fossils instead i happily found these type of rocks myself. So good to see what they were and wow if I just went a little bit further i would have got some with a bit purple. 😍

    Awesome video! Do you encounter a lot of dangers when searching for these incredible rocks? - for example rattlesnakes or scorpions? How do you protect yourself from these kinds of things? Thx.

    • @ThirdPlanetRocks
      @ThirdPlanetRocks  25 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@jlu926 Truthfully, no. I only have been in the desert in winter months. Snakes and scorpions are still there, but are much less active.
      I move slowly and carefully before picking anything up.
      The biggest danger is honestly the challenging hiking conditions. Easy to fall or twist an ankle

      Haha well thank you! I’m not near Vegas anymore - quite far now, actually…
      But if you follow the directions at the end, park and follow the washes to the slopes. I am pretty certain there’s far more spots than just this one with amethyst/crystal veins

      Thanks for watching! I was really surprised by how much is still available at this spot. Is it best to clean them with a wire brush + acid? Or soak them?

    • @Panicagq2
      @Panicagq2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ThirdPlanetRocks I'd try soaking a small, less precious piece first to see how the host rock responds first. If you use wire brushes, use brass if stiff plastic won't work. Be safe and have running water and lots of baking soda close by!

      @@ThirdPlanetRocks Yep, splashes and spills can happen. I like Sulfuric acid drain cleaner best for many minerals, but TH-cam has lots of guidance on what else works - I find the host rock makes a difference, so it's kinda trial and error.

    Do you think maybe some of the quarts are sun faded amethyst, maybe if you dig they will be purple

    • @ThirdPlanetRocks
      @ThirdPlanetRocks  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don’t think so, I’m regards to quartz. Some of the amethyst however could be a little faded. It’ll still be purple, but just slightly less intense than if it were freshly broken from the pegmatite seams.

      Roads have a tendency to change over time. This is especially true in arid places that experience little rainfall.
      Take accountability beyond watching TH-cam videos when you drive.
