    I always use a compact jig. My jigs are all full size jigs but I thread a chunk trailer onto the hook and trim the skirt super short.

    I might be a bit different, but my answer is "always" ! I am a finesse jig fanatic, so I always throw a finess jig, and then go larger if I need a bigger bite, or if something else tells me to go larger.

    Back when there were B.A.S.S. Fedeerations, a guy here in Maryland wrote an article about how he won Angler of the Year. I don't believe he finished first in any tournament, but he fished well enough throwing a Bitsy Bug to take the title.

    I learned from Charlie Brewer, 30 years ago, it's better to go for numbers. If you catch 30 bass, you're GONNA have a few good ones.

    My lake has been so hammered by tournaments and then with the temperatures lately and it being the only "All sports lake", finesse has been almost the only way to get a bite, I have just been using a 4" stick worm, but now you got the wheels turning 🤔

    Been trying to fish a jig more often. I fish smallmouth and bought some finese jigs online and have been tying my own. Found yellow pumpkin silicone front and black flat rubber back seems to be the deal for me. We don't have crawfish or goby's up here, but we have a lot of perch. So I think that might be why.

    Matt, just watched this again. How are you rigging the soft plastic? It looks like you attach the plastic weed less, as opposed to exposing the hook. How often do you do that with your jigs?

    • @MattStefanFishing
      @MattStefanFishing  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I exposed the hook. it may have looked that way in the video but no need to do it with the weedguard

    Hey Matt, great information and presentation, what rod and line are you using with that jig?

    • @learningtofish7036
      @learningtofish7036 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'll second that request. Power/action/length, line and leader, please, even though I have an idea about the answer already.

    • @MattStefanFishing
      @MattStefanFishing  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I’m using a custom built MHX NMB-873 blank. It’s a 7’3” MH fast action rod. Usually 15lb fluorocarbon unless super clear water and then drop down a little

    • @learningtofish7036
      @learningtofish7036 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MattStefanFishingNow I know about MHX. I've had bad experience with the Fenwick HMX(not same). Tips break off. Broke one off on my first ever real jig fish a couple weeks ago. Fenwick, this time, answered my email and I traded up(?) for the HMG MH/F only offer in 7' as casting. I usually have 12lb floro leader. I'm on the bank. I can see a faster hookset response with the longer rod. Was it pricey?

    • @MattStefanFishing
      @MattStefanFishing  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@learningtofish7036 the blank is about $120

    • @learningtofish7036
      @learningtofish7036 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MattStefanFishing I messaged them at MHX. They would not tell me where the blanks come from, just "abroad to reduce cost and designed, QC by us".

    Hope you can help! I have no problem in the spring but once the river is done with the spawn the largemouth just seem to disappear! I've tried everything but its a one here and one there deal.Smallmouth no problem but the better largemouth are gone. Any advice?

    • @MattStefanFishing
      @MattStefanFishing  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Fish the cut banks and lay downs closest to spawning coves. Usually upstream is better

    • @MattStefanFishing

    Thanks for this tip Matt, all of your reasoning is spot on in my opinion and who doesn’t like to catch more fish. One question, i assume you are throwing this on spinning gear but what weight line do you use? Thanks and keep giving your boys that family time on the water, they will never forget it. Good luck and thank you.

    • @MattStefanFishing
      @MattStefanFishing  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I start with 15 lb fluorocarbon and use on a medium heavy baitcasting rod. If it’s gin clear water I’ll sometimes go to 10 lb fluorocarbon leader with a spinning rod

    Do you ever go even smaller to like a tungsten micro jig? I like the Keitech but the Picasso Little Spotty has been a killer this Summer.
