Girl, I am right there with you. I'm a print it out or write it down kind of gal. My kids laugh at me. When I bought a new calendar book they laughed and said it's on your phone. I know, but I just want it wrote down on paper. I write out a grocery list for them to go get groceries and they type it up in their phones before leaving the house. I'm old school and not ready to move forward, probably never will. I enjoyed your tips. I need to get some of the sticky tabs. Very good idea.
I agree with you about Trick or Treating. Despise this holiday. I just bought a binder on Monday and got my three ring punch out. I started my organizing just like you. I do have an iPad and store some things. I find it easier using physical paper to read from. I do enjoy crocheting along with the tutorials though. Thanks for all you do. 😊
When I was quilting, I owned a desktop computer, and a good printer... Like you, I printed out my fav patterns, and stored them I plastic sleeves, I binders... A few were simply bookmarked... Inalso saved patterns I found in quilting magazines... I loved leafing through my notebooks... Inhave a bunch, for sure! I now have only an iPad, and an iOhone. So... I snap acreeb my fav patterns, and store them in albums... Some are also bookmarked, or saved in my Ravelry Library. I am a visual learner, so I also store tutorials In my uTube files. I often transcribe these patterns into plain Englishm and keep them in a notebook.., for quick reference, To be truthful, I miss my notebooks...Mistly because I enjoyed just looking through them, for inspiration.. I have found that I MUCH prefer my uTube tutorials to written patterns.. Seeing, as well as hearing how to do something is a big , big help. I can visualize simple written knitting instructions more easily than I can read crochet instructions.. I need to see what is happening. Thanks, again, for your frequent videos. I do look forward to them, and am never disappointed.. Happy Birthday to your little guy❤️🎈🎈🎈🎁
Looks like a great system to me. No worries about anything like storage fees for the cloud or power outages either! You will probably end up with a shawl binder, a baby accessory binder and so forth. Trick or treating is a pain! I was the happiest mom the year my kids were all old enough to not want to go! We went to the local rite aide store the day after and bought a ton of half price candy. The kids were soooooo happy! Be blessed! Love your videos!
Summer thank you for this tip. Im new to crochet. But now in just one year ive accumilated quite a bit of yarn and tools. This informstion is so important to consider when starting out a new its cool. Ann
I organize the same way. I have an iPad but I don’t like using a screen for my patterns. I like to have the paper so I can make notes and mark any adjustments I make. I find it more portable and I don’t have to worry about recharging my iPad or phone when I’m out and about with my crochet. I make sure that at least once a year, I get rid of the ones I don’t use, never will use or didn’t enjoy making. It saves on space. I’m old school, I guess. I still have real pen pals 😂Have a good one😊!
Hi. I’m a new subscriber. I too keep paper patterns in plastic sleeves. I like to keep my patterns nice and not wrinkled. When I’m done with the project I keep my ball bands in the sleeve as a record of my completed project. I’ll also write the date and who I made the project for on the pattern.
Happy Birthday to your son Flynn. Today the 29th is my daughter's birthday too. She turned 26. Seems like she was just a baby. Time sure flies by. Great video Summer. Have a wonderful week. 😊
Hey Summer, I still like pattern in hand even though I do have a lot stored in the cloud but when using pattern I do print it off and then store it in sleeves and the binders. Thank you for sharing, and as always love, laughter and happy crafting
Hi Summer! Thanks so much for sharing your organizing tips. I too am a paper pattern person 😀 so let me say, You. Are. A. Genius!! The plastic sleeves are the way to go. Thanks again, Mary
btw, I found a video of yours last week... and have now binge watched all your videos LOL... love how down-to-earth you are... and that you are a scout mom, just like me :)
you spelled it right I keep thinking I will go digital. But I have had issues with my kids breaking an external hard drvie ( I lost a lot of data then)...plus my last computer just pooped out. So I know I need to check out the cloud or some kind of off site data storage....I just need some time to set it up! Until then I happilly put my patterns in sleeves and binders ;-)
I tend to do the printed patterns as well... I also like to mark my spot so I don't lose my place in the pattern. I'm so excited for you... only 7 away from 3000!
Summer thanks for the idea you gave me. I'm a paper pattern person and have kept patterns in notebooks for years. Then I go through them and toss old (don't like 'em anymore) patterns. I never thought about using the page protectors - so thanks. I agree with you about Halloween. When my kids were little my husband and I took turns (rotating years) taking the kids door to door (I always seemed to get the cold, wet ones). I never enjoyed dressing up as a kid and h**l would freeze over before I did as an adult. Now we don't get any kids at our door. They seem to go to the new subdivisions or the "trunk or treat" at the local churches..so it is a calm night and I enjoy it.,
Oh I print mine out too...Just because I killed a couple computers in my life and was unable to recover hard drive hahaha. Yep I’m old school I like to hold a pattern just as I do a good book 🤪 Great podcast I love your binder idea with dry erase marker 👏👏👏
To help organize your patterns in your note book binder, under each section, make an index page listing the name of each pattern in that section. I've used this system for ages, especially if you have several. Also, if you have the room, use a binder for each type of pattern and again use the index. Love your channel.
That is a great idea, I should do that. Right now I just put the ones I use the most in front of the section and the ones I haven't used, or don't use often are in the back.
I usually store my patterns in iBooks on my iPad but I appreciate you sharing this method for storing printed patterns. Love the way you organized your binder!
Go Summer!!!! I don't care what anyone says,,,, electronics FAIL!!! I know, I have lost LOTS of photos, patterns, etc, from "modern" tech. Even so called "online storage sites. Nothing better than having good ole HARD COPIES!!! :) I have used the grease pencils for marking. they don't wipe of easily as the dry erase does,,,,but yet they still wipe off easy when ready, not at just a accidental brushing. LOL! Thank you for the tab idea. I am gonna have to see if I can find some locally. ha ha ha (for an oil boom area,,, this place SORELY LACKS). Blessings to you and your family!
Hi Connie I like printing copies too. As well as getting pictures printed and not just on our devices. Its so much better looking through actual photos. Have a wonderful week. 😊
Rambling Mountain Rose I totally agree! I wish I could have hard copies if everything...but as I have said, I only have an iPad and an iPhone... No printer... So...in one way it another, everything I’d digital.
I'm with you I've recently started using a binder to keep my patterns in. Like the idea of using the sticky tab to mark and the dry eraser marker. New subscriber
I grew up in the 60's and am a teacher. I also print patterns and put them in page savers and a binder for each type of patterns. I had a lot of small binders so I used them. Some of my patterns go back to the '80's. I also read through the pattern and visualize the pattern because I started crocheting before tutorials. Now I am trying to remember putting the information for each project in a notebook so I can make something again.
Awesome idea of the erasable markers on the plastic sleeves!👏I’m a paper person too, nothing gets me madder than when I’m trying to read a pattern on my iPad and it goes to sleep! UGH!
Love your organizational planning system....don't worry about the technology, we all go at our own rate. I'm cracking up and loving it that Halloween just doesn't do it for you. Sneak in & enjoy some quiet down time. Thanx for sharing :D
These are great tips. I already have mine in a binder and organized by type of pattern but using sheet protectors is genius! Also love the idea of using a dry erase marker to keep track of where you are. Love your channel!
I use both methods, digital and sleeves in binders! I am one of those with 20 binders LOL! But I use one sleeve per page so I'm now going to go through my binders and put the whole pattern in one sleeve, Maybe it will help me save on space!! I also love the idea of writing on the sleeve cause I write on my pattern and now have a different ways to keep track! Thanks for the great tips!!
I have a laptop & store lots of photos, but do print out the actual pattern sheets to put in a notebook like yours. I have the photos of the projects I may or may not get around to this year all recently stored in a "cloud". That way I can "look up" anything I might want to make by photo- the actual pattern is printed out already or noted as to location (something to buy from Ravelry or whomever). The pattern magazines from years ago, I have saved those intact, with some plastic booklet savers (same with booklets) that have a long plastic bar that slips into the middle of booklet or magazine and has another long, attached bar with notebook holes pre-punched so all those can go in same or different notebooks. I think I got a few dozen (buy by 6-12 pieces) from Annie's Attic. You can also scan off the pages of pattern magazines and make your own sets, if you don't want to keep the whole magazine. My sister does that, but she scans the whole front cover, then just the few patterns that she wanted to save from that magazine keeping them altogether.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, JER. I also stayed home while the kids and the hubby went out trick or treating. I personally loved giving out candy to the trick or treaters. I loved seeing the kids in their costumes. It was always so adorable. My kids are now adults so no trick or treating in this household anymore. We don't even get trick or treaters where we moved to:( so I don't get to see the little kids in their costumes anymore:( that I really don't like.
Also, I am still a paper pattern kinda gal too. Although I have no paper for my printer to print off these doll patterns by Mary Smith on Ravelry that I really want to make that I purchased. So I am having to use my laptop to work on this vampire doll that I am making right now. Well I just started lol so won't have it done by the time Halloween rolls around but I have it to decorate for next year lol. But I also got her Santa and Mrs. Clause doll patterns too as well as her dragon pattern. She has the most adorable dolls. Along with Holly from The Proper Pineapple. So I have my clipboard for all my notes and tallies and where I left off in the pattern so that I don't get lost sitting right next to me. Although I don't like the fact that I can't go sit in bed and work on it. I have to sit right here in front of my laptop to work on him.
I have gone digital. I love it! I bookmark patterns on websites. I use Google Drive to save PDF patterns. It is free, has tons of storage, and I can make sub folders for pattern type, like hats, mittens... This year I started writing a crochet journal to keep track of what I was making, which hook size, yarn, pattern source, etc. This is where I keep track of any modifications I have made to the pattern, comments or reminders. Over the last 2 months, I made 35 hats and pairs of mittens in 4 sizes and many styles for a charity project at my church. The crochet journal was really helpful! I recommend it. I was intimidated by mittens at first but they are not so hard. Mikey at Crochet Crowd and Claire at Bob Wilson 123 have good tutorials. The hardest thing for me was finding a pattern I really liked... I finally ended up designing my own mitten pattern. My next challenge is learning how to knit. Happy Birthday to your son!
I agree for me the hardest part was finding a pattern I really understood and liked. I think I stopped after 5 patterns or so and then just moved on to something else. I know I need to move to a digital format. I have saved a bunch of patterns to my compter, espeicaly the ones I bought off raverly. I just need to figure out a system, Like I said I want to be able to access the patterns from my phone, compter and my kindle. My hubby is a computer nerd, but does not like to teach and explain stuff! ha
Hey summer! Some great tips! Happy birthday to your lil’ Flynn! You crack me up (about your Halloween thoughts! Lol) I always enjoy your videos 😊 thanks for sharing!
Hi Summer:-). I pretty much do my patterns like you but I do indulge myself with buying the protective sleeves from my local warehouse club. I put the pages back to back just like a book because if a pattern has say 14 pages I'm more likely to use it if it's set up like a book. I also mark my paid patterns with a "p" up in the corner of the cover page so that I make sure that I never accidentally give it away :-). I also use the post it notes like you do & it makes life so much easier as well as using them for quick notes.
I would rather print out patterns too. But I don't have a printer. Lol But I do have a I pad. It is easier to pick track with the paper ones. Thanks for the tips.
I am the same way, I like printing them out. Cause some electronic things crash, or if u lose power can't use the electronics either all the time. Although I do use the online also. But I rather have the hard copy. Never thought about the sticky tabs to help mark were u r in pattern so I am going to go get me some of them.
Summer you think growing up in the '90's makes you old fashioned.......I am a Baby Boomer so I must be a Luddite :) . I keep mine in binders - but we have a terrible dust problem so I use those zip around binders.....I also have a large notebook with needle sizes and yarn sizes from different countries as well as old patterns that were falling apart are written there. I am in Oz and so use the English terms in crochet, and although I know just what the US terms mean I actually translate it on the page so if my mind wanders off and I see dc, I don't do an English dc [US single crochet] etc. Knitting isn't so complicated with terms phew! Thanks for the look into your world.
The only thing that gets me more excited than yarn is planning and organising haha! My system has looked very similar to yours but I am currently in the process of converting everything over to digital. Reading through the entire pattern before beginning a project is great advice but I never do it. I've been caught out a few times with that but still have not learned my lesson
Summer, I’m so with you when it comes to Halloween, we started trick or treating here in Australia in the last 15 years... and I’m so not a fan, the kids loved trick or treating, but I really disliked them knocking on strangers doors asking for sweets.
Hi, I have an iPad, however since I tend to watch tv through my iPad it’s very difficult to use the Knit Companion app and watch tv at the same time, so I use paper charts and store them in a binder, I also have an extra binder that I store all my current projects in and then when I want to work on a certain project I can pull it out of my binder, once the project is done, it gets replaced in the main binder for when I want to knit it again, hope this made sense.
Hi summer! I just bought sheet protectors and a binder. The sheet protectors aren't wide enough to hold my patterns since most of them have many pages. What size sheet protectors do you use?
Thats very close to my set up. If you want I would be willing to copy your magazine patterns for you. All you would need to do is send me one and I would copy it and send both the magazine and the patterns copies back to you. I love patterns and printing them out.
I too prefer a written pattern. It’s just easier for me. I’m not a computer person. I do find things on the internet but I mostly use books and written patterns.
My hubby claims that there are programs that allow you to take notes on the documents....but I feel like that's one more program...when right now I can just get a pencil or pen! haha
I have most of my patterns online, but I also print them as I go to have the hard copy with me as I'm on the go & print another for my binder with tabs le you. 😉 Happy Birthday to your baby! 😊🎂🍨 and Happy Halloween! 🍬🍭🍫

I very rarely print. I use my iPad and phone 97% of the time. Your system is awesome for people who print! ~Angela
Great idea. Im hoping to avoid the halloween craziness this year. Your even closer to your goal tonight. Thats wonderful.
I agree with you about Trick or Treating. Despise this holiday. I just bought a binder on Monday and got my three ring punch out. I started my organizing just like you. Great idea about putting the ball bands in the sleeve too
@@SummersTipsandStitchesgreat idea! I love the idea of of writing down who I made the item for

Thank you! us scout moms have to stick together! haha
happy crafting~
I got my teaching degree in 1990 and I am with you on paper print outs and sleeves.
I do all digital, myself, but you have a wonderful system, Summer. Happy Birthday, Flynn (sp)!
you spelled it right
I keep thinking I will go digital. But I have had issues with my kids breaking an external hard drvie ( I lost a lot of data then)...plus my last computer just pooped out. Thanks for sharing your system, I print also but put the patterns in a file cabinet. I haven’t gone digital yet.
I usually store my patterns in iBooks on my iPad but I appreciate you sharing this method for storing printed patterns. Love the way you organized your binder!
Great ideas thank you
Oh Summer we are birds of a feather !! I do a lot of the same things you do !
Go Summer!!!! I don't care what anyone says,,,, electronics FAIL!!! I know, I have lost LOTS of photos, patterns, etc, from "modern" tech. Even so called "online storage sites. Hi Connie I like printing copies too. As well as getting pictures printed and not just on our devices. Its so much better looking through actual photos. Have a wonderful week. 😊

Ah ha,.... Another person who prefers a real daily planner...or even a regular calendar. I like to actually write things down😊👍
I need to get a “pen” for my iPad, so I can mark on it! I love making notes.
You have inspired me! I too love printed patterns and have soooo many. I can’t wait to get started organizing them. Thanks a lot! Here I come Amazon!
Awesome, tfs💕💕💕
Great ideas Summer. I too, still print my patterns out & organize in binders. Works great for me.

My hubby is a computer nerd, but does not like to teach and explain stuff! ha
I'm a printer too. Love those stickys!
I agree wholeheartedly! I don’t like Halloween either, we stay inside drink hot chocolate☕️ eat popcorn🍿 and watch Christmas movies🎄🎟🎬

I would rather print out patterns too. But I don't have a printer. Lol But I do have a I pad. It is easier to pick track with the paper ones. Thanks for the tips.
Love your ideas. I have a big 3 ring binder my printed stuff is in but it’s not organized at all. I may give this a try.
I want to make mittens some day too. I have a few you tube videos saved.

Happy Birthday to Flynn!
I have about 8 binders lol, been crocheting for 4 years. And at least 50 books. 😮
I do the same and I have a folder with a snap top folder for when I don't have time to put them in binder
I print my patterns and put in binders also. Its just so much easier that way
Hi summer! I just bought sheet protectors and a binder. The sheet protectors aren't wide enough to hold my patterns since most of them have many pages. What size sheet protectors do you use?
I am 90% digital. If I'm going to be somewhere for a while I'll print a pattern but for the most part I pull it up on my phone.
Help. I also have binders for my printed sewing, knitting and crocheting patterns. I keep a few things online but not much.
I’m a 70s kid. I’m wondering how do print patterns off of Safari without all those ads? I’m a new follower.
I also started putting mine in binders I never kept my patterns
I do at the same way like you hihi
I print some and digitally save some. The digital versions I save to an external hard drive.
My hubby claims that there are programs that allow you to take notes on the documents....but I feel like that's one more program...when right now I can just get a pencil or pen! haha
I'm like you too and I am a paper pattern person.
Yes summaaaa !!
I do the sa.e with the dry eraser marker
I don't have a computer or printer. I look up patterns on my phone then copy them down longhand in spiral bound notebooks.
I have most of my patterns online, but I also print them as I go to have the hard copy with me as I'm on the go & print another for my binder with tabs le you. 😉 Happy Birthday to your baby! 😊🎂🍨 and Happy Halloween! 🍬🍭🍫
I save some patterns to Dropbox (the free version).

Oh I agree, but I have to be out there with them, to make sure they are safe!
