  • I am NOT a TV repairman. This video involves high voltages that can KILL you. Please do not attempt this stuff unless you are comfortable working with high voltages, capacitors, and plugging things into the wall outlets!
This is my fix for a friend's Samsung Plasma Smart TV. One day it wouldn't turn on. The RED LED on the front of the unit just blinked, and he could hear clicky sounds from the tv, but no picture. It wouldn't power up. So he gave me the TV and bought a new one. This one is around $3k or so... or at least it was. Basically Samsung's best of the best....
Here is the link to the video that inspired the fix....

I'm sure this video will help other models, and help troubleshoot other brands of TV's.
    Thanks for watching!

update: 10/2017. this tv has come back into my possession. it stopped working again, only this time, it TOTALLY stopped working. I suspected the power supply, so I swapped that out for an ebay power supply. no dice. swapped a few other boards ( i was guessing ... no good) ...no go. Months later I revisited it and swapped the power supply with a new one off ebay. PERFECT. I know this is guess and check, so if you want to check out a channel that isn't about guess and check, please check out 12voltvids channel here on youtube. He does much more in depth component level fixes.

I just wanted to say thank you so much for taking the time to post this video....it saved me at least $500. I used your technique to troubleshoot which board was making my Samsung plasma click and not turn on and although it wasn't the x or y axis board but the power board itself. No bulging capacitors but looked on the website for used parts and new power board for $42 shipped to my house fixed the tv perfectly.....thanks again and don't listen to any of those idiots who commented negatively above me....you saved me a whole bunch of money and time. If I could send you a bottle a whiskey I would!!! Thanks for the help

Anthony McKeller, can't seem to reply directly, so hopefully this helps, sounds like either your power supply is bad or your av board, again, i'm not an expert on this, but it may be worth playing "parts darts" ...throw some parts at it and see if it improves....2 boards, can't be all that expensive on ebay....best of luck

The board in question is a
    SAMSUNG X-Sustain Board LJ41-08415A / LJ92-01713B BA4
Near the ribbon cable - 15 pin connector - you will find the LEGEND
describing what function each pin is for
    Pins 1 - 4 - 10 - 13 are GROUND
GROUND is the side of the RED caps along the edge of the BOARD
    Pins 14 - 15 are the 5v rail
Check that there are no S/C from the 5v power rail to ground
check that the main power semiconductors are not S//C
You will find a semiconductor near the 5 pin socket -
You may even find Silicon .hot glue holding it in place,
I don't off the top of my head recall the part /type number =
However the semiconductor mentioned near the FUSE / 5 pin connector
    is likely to be S/C
I found this to be the case on three occasions
It also is recommenced to make a quick check of all the DiODES D****
& ZENER DIODES ZD**** for S/C -- that will take only five minutes

Still have my Sharp 40" CRT and never had such problems. I see so many problems on the internet with all the new type TV's, seem more than for the old CRT's. Samsung TV's seem to have a higher complaint rate across internet than other makers, but maybe they sell more of them too. We had Samsung VCR's that lasted almost a decade each, so wonder if their quality control has lagged since those days?

+Kris Shuter Let me get this right, you replaced your main supply board, and your issue hasn't gone away? or now you have the same issue as I did? odds are it isn't the power cord. never seen one go bad unless it was chewed through. I'm not a repairman, so I don't know what to tell you. Start pulling cords on the individual boards and see if your tv comes on... then you'll have found your short, or find a vid that more closely matches your symptoms. best of luck

I have the same PN51D6500 TV and the red light keeps cycling on and off also. When it is "on" everything works picture and sounds. according to some utube videos, it could be the power supply or the mainboard. You said that you replaced the power supply and it did not solve the problem. Did you end up replacing the main board? I do not want to buy a power supply yet because of your situation, maybe i should buy the mainboard instead first. Wondering if you can add additional information on your Plasma TV. Thanks in advance. Simon.

Turned out to be the power supply. Open'er up and locate the single fat capacitor at the bottom (not the 4 giant capacitors) this one is smaller, but still notably larger than the rest. It was puffed (ever so slightly). This also means more of the caps have suffered despite not showing physical signs.
If you're not up to soldering, worry not. Replacement boards go for about $40 to $50. They're an easy swap, just make sure you unplug, tap the power button a few times and you're good to go.
SELL your old board for "repair/parts" locally or on ebay. Don't trash it! It will some day be fixed and someone on ebay will be selling it again in case some of us need a replacement ;)

the clicking sound is from the relay(?) in the power supply. this can be caused by faulty solder joints in the transformer (square thing with the yellow big strip). I just repaired the click on a samsung TV this morning by taking off the power board and resoldering all the connections on the back of the board on the transformer (and all the other connections for caps ,etc. which I could se. samsung uses lead free solder which apparently does not with standard the years of on/off - heating/cooling of operation so eventually it can crack. and have bad connections. cheers

  • @bobbg9041

WRONG, You need to ground your body to the tv chassis. Not an earth ground.
This reminds me of a story my old boss told me. Guy comes in with ultra high powered 2 way radio and a rather large booster the way exceded FCC rules and regulations in his truck, with this he added 4 alternators to power this mess
But on his radio it called for a solid earth ground, well its a truck you cant drive a copper rod into the ground 10' and ground to it then be able to drive any place. So he did the next best thing
Portable earth ground a 5 gallon bucket of dirt and a copper rod shoved into it.
My point is a chasis ground
And earth ground are 2 differnt things
Becuse translation dont always say what it ment people get confused about what one is required, but I can assure you
You should have been grounded to the chassis of the TV and not the houses earth ground however either will eliminate a static charge. In repair shops I belive they ground both.
But your at home. By the way low humidity causes extreme static electricity so its best to be in a area with 45% humidity. To dry static builds faster to wet mold grows. 45% is the happy middle. To test with dry hair run a comb in your hair, if hairs fallow the comb its lots of static if not then its low statically charged area. And honestly your biggest concern is the ic chips not so much the boards. Handle the board by the edges and try not to touch metal parts and you may not even need to wrist strap.
I have one but honestly I never use it.
And I havnt had a problem.
That said ive heard of people just touching the power button and the static charge screw up the computer.
    So honestly you never know.
Live by the 45% rule this cuts out any problems you may have its also healthier.

That TV swallows 440 watts of electricity every hour (almost half a kw/h) and will cost you an arm and two legs if you use it. That is why the previous owner binned it and bought a more energy efficient TV

@@matthewolson8875 Compare how much better the pic is from a plasma . I've had 3 lcd's and 2 plasma's and still am amazed by the picture quality of the plasmas. And in the winter it helps keep the room warm. I've seen little to no difference in my electric bill. I have a $2500 LG 65 8500 and the 50" Samsung 450 series has a brighter , more clear image. Only a few lcds come close as well as OLEDs. When you turn off your lights there is still light coming from the plasma even on a black screen. When I go into the electronics stores and see even the most expensive sets there they still can't out do my old plasma. Seems repairs are cheap too.

Agustin Sampayo well in $0.01 you are right I did not do a component level repair but then again I never claimed to be a television repairman all I did was go through some simple troubleshooting steps to isolate the problem to the specific board as it turns out it probably is not cost effective to do a component level repair in this television and it is far easier to pick up a particular board on eBay for $36 or whatever it end up being there is another guy on TH-cam that is excellent at component-level repair and I highly suggest you check out his videos 12 volt vids I think

LOL - because your video was something like I would make. Somewhat wordy and much like talking to one's self. BTW, thanks for your wordy video. I took the back off of mine. Got my volt meter out and the power supply wasn't putting out any voltage. I found a ceramic capacitor that had a burn mark underneath it. Also, the soldered-in fuse was blown (who makes fuses where you can't see inside them? DOH). Even though I bought my plasma in 2013, they don't have replacement power supplies, so I had to take it out and mail it to a company in virginia to fix it. I could have replaced the ceramic capacitor but I don't know what else could be blown. Best leave it to the dude with the diagram and the oscilloscope to figure it out.
