Phil - Remove the extension.
Since you have to remove that panel.
I highly recommend notching a channel for the heating pipe. Do it right as it should have been done the first time.
The other door can be repaired back to its original state.
Neat and tidy = Peace of Mind.
If he removes the extension, he said he will only keep one set of doors. Removing a set of doors is a harsh difference to the original features of the chateau.
If the extension is removed, the complete restoration of both sets of doors needs to be done.
If having to choose between keeping two sets of doors or 6 inches of extension that will blend in to the paneling, keeping both sets of doors is more aesthetically pleasing.
Agree 100%
i agree with Rob - remove the extension , cut a channel to bury the pipe , repair and reinstall both pairs of doors , patch the panel and paint . i don't understand why this is such a big deal . this is the master suite and this installation should be executed with longevity of originality in mind ... don't cobble it together
Remove it. More work, yes. But take it back to the way it was.
By the way, the stonework is lovely!
yes but someone used cement instead of lime mortar for pointing.
@ ah geez…
Benefit of the doubt, they didn’t know better ?
My opinion would be to ask Billy! He always has good ideas!
I totally agree!
Phil, Remove the extension AND keep both sets of double doors. A complete restoration with a few holes to accomodate the pipe. Or could the pipe go under the floorboards?
Maintaining both sets of double doors maintains the distinctive look of the era and is more aesthetically pleasing. Removing a set of doors is a harsh difference to the original features of the chateau.
Agreed. ❤
Also agreed
Flush with the wall nice and clean no strange extension
Remove the extension, live with one set of doors, you can always add them back later if it doesn’t feel right.
Yes make it flush with the wall again.
Leave the extension. Cover the opening with wood. Once painted it will look and work fine. Move forward on your refresh of the master. Path of least resistance you can come back to it in 5-10 years when you refresh again. You have trees to cut, wallpaper to remove, walls to paint, lighting to find and other rooms to do.
That's what I'm thinking. Leave it and get on with removing that nasty vinyl & treat the moldy bits. AND deal with those blown down trees.
I 2nd that motion, lol! Move on❣️to getting your bedroom done!
In addition, I think keeping both sets of doors is more of a historical feature than the extension. The extension will be barely noticable except to a historical architect. For most people, once the door is opened, we look to what is on the other side than at the woodwork.
path of least resistance seems to be the problem. I've been watching for a while now and there's a growing list of things that need fixing.
Can you reroute pipe under floor boards? Or in ceiling below? Or make wider door frames on both sides and bring panels in making doorway slightly narrower but will hide pipe behind the extended paneled wall. You would have to trim entry doors to fit new space.
My personal opinion is make it as original as possible. You have gotten that far with it might as well finish it now. The wallpaper I would pull some of it off and put it with the pic of the room for future reference as well. You are doing a great job Phil I know it is not easy but worth the effort though. Have a great day
I say put it back to its original state ❤
Can't you take the heating pipe down, and under the wooden flooring? Then that would allow both doors to remain intact (well, with one repaired, obvs.)
I was also wondering this option, even if the pipe shows in the ceiling below, molding resembling the original period of the building can conceal the pipe. Should have been done that way when the heating was added anyway.
Perhaps you can reroute the heating pipe under the floor and avoid cutting the original door. I agree with you on not really wanting to cut the original door.
Remove the extension. There is no need to have two sets of door if it’s going to be the bathroom in a private bedroom. You could always hang a mirror in that section with some nice lighting
Personally I would remove the extension and return to the original. You will have to remove the wallpaper anyway. Looks so much nicer.
The wallpaper is fantastic wow😍
Can the pipe work not go under the floorboards?
It might not have floorboards it most probably is solid stone, they should have cut a channel in the wall when fitting the pipes but a cut-out on the door will be the best solution now, the other door is already cut so just keep it the same!?!
It looks like if you remove the extension you will have to redo the plaster work on that entire wall. The door frame would be inset from the wall. I also think that bath tub would make an excellent dog bath😊
dog bath. awesome idea!
Is it possible to run the heat pipe through the floor? I would remove the extension. Thanks for sharing your progress. Michigan
Flush with the wall Phil.
Personally, I’d lose the extension. Saving the door but leaving the intrusion into the room would just annoy me continually. I’m less sure about what to do with the doors at that point, I suspect I’d leave them off and justify that (to myself) as part of the impact of changing two rooms into to a suite. But then I’d want to do the same with the paired set of doors on the other side of the room.
Phil sleep on it and decide cause you have to live with it. I like everything back to original.
I love seeing the stone wall in the little hallway, it adds character and it is beautiful!
Remove the extension and use one set of doors. It will make the dressing room entrance less complicated. You will see all wood panels from the bedroom. You are so lucky to have them intact.
Take the extension down re install original doors and cut them but do clean cuts keep and label in a safe place so can be reattached in future should you remodel the heating system.
Original ❤
Flush to the wall so it's original. You're doing a fabulous job on everything. You've done everything as original as you could everywhere else. Love what you've done so far!!💞
Leave the extension. It looks so much better without tub!!!! So glad you finally did that! Great job!
Remove the extension, set the doors aside until you can move those pipes under the floor, then reattach the doors.
Can you move pipe into the floor? Otherwise put it back and leave door off. Will make it easier to restore later if something changes down the road.
Beautiful wallpaper paisley design
Phil, my vote is eave the extension. It looks like it has always been there. You can make the piece look like the original panel. I like the transformation of the room. I'm also glad you decided to stay in your beautiful chateau.
Flush with the wall.
Remove the extension. You can repair the door or not put it on. That jutting out bit would drive me crazy.
I’m for bringing it back to the original.
Enjoying your project. Thanks for filming.
Phil, remove the extension and return it all the way it was originally. The heating pipe can be hidden away since you are looking behind the panel. It will look so much nicer.
You took a few steps forward. Good work.
Hi Phil,
The final decision is yours but I would get rid of the extension of the door frame. But that is just how I am and how I would be if I was doing the work so the doors are back to its original location.
Hi Phil,
Build it back to how it was.
The first instinct is mostly right.....
The wallpaper is absolut amazing.
Try to recreate it somewhere and put it around the fireplace with that stunning mirror.
This would be amazing with dark/ navy blue walls and that white and golden wooden frames.
That vinyl wallpapapers are pur horror.
I stripped our house as well.....there were papers on the wall from the 60 to the 80....
It was a never ending story of flowers and dust🙈.....so good luck and good night,K.
Original for sure, whilst opportunity is there before redecorating, I can see your options but doors are a big part in features with the nice wide walls should go back to how they were, and yep that wallpaper is nice to find but nicer to scrape away, just imagining the whole room in that 😎wooooo
Phil, since you were so happy to see the original panels still in place, and that extension was done later. My vibes I'm getting from you is to put it back in its original state. Does it really need two sets of doors for a private suite? 😊
Great to see the old wallpaper but I agree with you, Phil, it’s a bit busy for me!
I agree with Rob to remove the extension. Good luck with whatever you decide 😊
Hi Phil, work is progressing very well! Can you channel your inner Billy P. and redirect the heating pipe under the floor boards? Likely a serious pain, but it would be back to original. 😅. Our vote is to go back to original as much as possible. Good luck!
I would prioritze having the doors in place. The consitency of the three rooms with the panel doors would look beautiful but also functional, they also offer privacy and cozy feel. if someone is sleeping the other can enjoy a book or coffe or get dressed in the dressing room without disturbing others.
Loose the extension and leave the doors off unless you can move those bloody heating pipes.
What a cool find! Finding the wall paper, I wonder what if a small piece of it could be framed to add to the history of your home?
Flush to the walls. Bury that huge pipe in the floor. I know it's a lot of work, but it would restore the passage to the original form.
That original wall paper was fabulous! So ornate, but can definitely understand why it’s not your taste. I would say keep the original notched out door and not have the 2nd pair of doors and be able to remove the extension without having 2 doors.
Fantastic job Phil. 😊
Hey Phil! That's some good work and very interesting about the extension ... ultimately, it's your decision, but, one option you could explore is whether or not you could put the heating pipe under the floor ... so, just exactly as it is, just pushed down lower! To me, it wouldn't look so neat sticking out like that, plus, dust and things can (& probably do) get stuck behind pipes. Basically, if there's a way to hide it, do so, but, if not, then just work around it.
Amazing what you can find behind
Personally, I'd leave the doors into the ensuite, get rid of the extension and leave off the doors on the bedroom side. You only need one set of doors for privacy into the bathroom. The bedroom side would look like the walk-through hall ways in other parts of the house. Replace the paneling in the walk-through, and do whatever seems most useful with the heating pipe.
if i had to do all of it, i would try to hide the heating pipes and other things under the floor and walls, but that depends, drilling through this massive stone work would take so much work, or depends if you have a space under the wood paneling to put the pipes there
Do what is easier, this job is enormous and never-ending.
Wonderful discovery, Phil!
I like the fact of the originality of things I guess depending on how far you want or can go with the project
Still cannot get over the “bathtub”!!!
That Wallpaper is just stunning . 😍🤩😍. I m not on that extension maybe try and fix it up .
I think it would look better flush with the wall again. You could leave the door off on the bedroom side as you suggested. That's what I would do. The wall paper is fantastic, but I couldn't live with it either 😁
What ever you decide to do with that extension is okay with me. If I must have a say, I like restoring things to their original beauty.
Maybe check out other chateaus that have suites of rooms with connecting doors. Do they have two sets of doors or one? How do they design/decorate the space between the doors?
Good morning Phil. Nice discovery with the wall paper. I did not know your chateau used to be a Hotel. Little by little progress is made. Until next time. Please, take care and stay safe. Love ya, Happy Holidays 🎅🎄🌹🇺🇸🕊🦢👍🙏🌈😘🌞❤️😇🍺
Phil you’re doing a fantastic job! You have a vision for the completed project glad you’re open to slight changes.
looks a thousand times better already7
Thank you!
It will take half a day to remove the panelling, cut a channel in the wall and sink the heating pipes into the channel. Or under the floorboards as others have suggested. You can then repair the door, remove the extension and make the whole area much cleaner. Same for the pipes coming down the walls.
It would take more than a day to cut a channel into solid granite walls. It is likely to be a granite wall under the floor where the pipe is. Even if there was wood to cut that thickness out of a support beam would lose the integrity of the support. IMHO
@ - as Phil said, the walls are 1.5m thick, so removing 10cm or less would have no effect.
There will be no stone immediately under the floors. They are suspended on joists.
Anyway…
Well since you asked for advice…. I would get rid of the addition. Instead of cutting the door I’d remove the original foot panel and replace it with an altered one for the pipe for the time being. But put it aside incase someday you replace the radiators with an alternate heating. But it’s a question which would bother you most the door or the extension?
Put the heating pipes in a cut channel in the wall , behind the panel or explore putting all the pipes under the floor boards through out each room, should have been done originally , they are a real eyesore.! Oh, and take the extension off. That’s what I’d do, but more time , money and two steps back.
Hi Phil, l have been following Terry and family at Chateau De LalaCelle, and watching how they have cut and rejigged a lot of panelling has been incredible. I know it's easy to say and do when there are more people working on it. Keep well and plod on. Xx😊
Hello Phil!
I'm loving the uncluttered walkway bringing it back to its original function. My opinion is IF you can reroute the heating pipe to go under the floorboards, THEN it would be worth putting the doorframe flush to the wall and restoring the door that was cut so horribly. I don't think notching the other door is a good idea. I hope you are well, please give Lightning a pat for me.
Very cool, how nice!!
The original wallpaper is stunning, what beautiful vibrant colours. I would happy have that wall paper as a feature wall, gorgeous.
I absolutely love the wallpaper, yes it’s a bit fussy for you,but what a fabulous feature wall behind the bed it would be. XxK🇬🇧❤️❤️
Take the extension off and make it original again.
Two points I can see here. 1st two sets of doors may keep the heat in both rooms better in winter, but will probably be open during the day at least in summer. 2nd do you really need two sets of doors as it's your own personal suite and easier to only open one set if needed. Obviously you have to check behind the paneling to see if anything is amiss, personally I'd go for one set of doors and a small recess or alcove effect in the bedroom. 💕🇦🇺
Bring it back to the original would be my vote 😍😘
always original
oh, wow!
Could you cut out in floor & run pipe under & come up closer to heater.?
So cool
Yes Phil I'm on the remove side x
Beautiful wallpaper
Ask Billy.. he might have suggestions 🤷🏻♀️
Remove the extension and make the door way original, then put the doors back and cut the bottom. Although it's not original from the château being built, it's absolutely the original way it was done when heating was installed to these beautiful old buildings.
Phil, See if by keeping the extension, you can reattach the doors to their original positions, and can be used in that way !
Restoring it to the original design, or as close as possible, is better than the weird way it sticks out of the wall. Even if you have to cut the corner of the door to accommodate the heating pipe, you're going to be closer to 95% of the original design. 😊
Phil. The wall above that extension from the camera angle, looks to be extended as well. Is that going to be a problem to remove the extension, like having to remove the whole wall?? Also, would it not be better to channel a little trough out of the stone at the bottom of that outside wall and put the plumbing into the trough. It would be a little more work but I think in the long run, it would clean up that space a lot more. For the pipe going up the wall, maybe some kind of decorative trim to cover it, make it look like a pillar or something! Make the
“ old girl” a bit more grand! All the best 🎉🎉❤❤
Clean it all up. Paint it, and leave the extension Phil. 😊
Ditch the extension & put the heating pipe under the floorboards in that little section & put the doors back where the should go. Job done Cheers.
It looks like the builders used the original doors as wall panels to cover up the pipes , you could restore the door to it's original position and take the extension back to the original wall and restore the dividing doors .
he took the original doors off.
@jensissons5709 he took off a top panel off the original door .Phil took a piece of plywood off the original door way to expose the original door that the builders of the hotel used as a fill in for the gap between the original walls and the extension .
I would leave one set of doors, then take away 5he panels and expose the stone. It brings back so much character.
Get to the original stone wall and decide later as to how it relates to your plans for those rooms , for that level in the buliding. Renovation is down to the nitty gritty to know what you have and no hiding stuff.
Fantastisch leuke vlog!😃👏🏻 Ik hou van verbouwen
If you have to remove the panel to fix it you could just as well chip out for the pipe in the bottom while you’re at it. Then remove the extension, hang up the original doors and fix the door with a cut for the pipe. Like it should have been done from the beginning.
Like you Phil, I am all for going back to how it was originally. I know it will probably be more work but it will definitely look better. The wallpaper you have uncovered looks familiar. I think Stephanie Jarvis from CChateau de Lalande has something very similar in one of her chatea bedrooms, I could be wrong though. X
I agree the wallpaper is a busy pattern.
Love your DYI
Remove the extension, shift the pipe under the flooring and/or use one set of doors. Near original as possible and be still be warm .
Restore the frame to be flush with the wall (get rid of the extension) . But don't put those doors back on if you do not wish to cut the door. If at some point you end up with a different heating solution then you can put back the doors if you choose to. Since the rooms are going to be connected suite, there really is not real need for double door sets between each room.
