If you get a USB 3.0 hard drive it will work fine on your PC with USB 2.0, just at USB 2.0 speeds. And if at some point you want the extra speed, you can fit a USB 3.0 card to your PC (as I show in the video).

Thanks for this comment. :) The way I say the website name is quite deliberate to make it memorable. When I started this TH-cam channel, the intention was to promote the website (and then its ExplainingTheFuture sister site on my other channel). But now, the TH-cam channels are more popular than the websites -- but the name has kind of become my catchphrase, so I keep saying it the same, distinctive way! More videos soon. :)

The white cables lead to a backing plate that has two USB 2.0 and two firewire ports on it. They came with the motherboard, and plug into its internal USB and a firewire ports. Not all motherboards have (many of ) these kinds of socket, which is why you may not have any sockets to plug in the leads for front ports that came with your case.

Mr. Barnatt is and was sooooo ahead of his time. Wow. "In five years..." That was 2010! It's 2020, 9 months into the 'Rona apocalypse, and when my new fancy e.h.d. wouldn't "work" with my 3 year old laptop, I found this video. Mr. Barnett, I wish I had stumbled upon you earlier. +Wyntrr_End We clearly see different devices! I have not seen a new PC or laptop for years that does not have USB 3.0, and indeed many tablets and smartphones now have micro USB 3.0 connectors. Most external hard drives are USB 3.0, as are many USB keys.

Interesting. I have worked as a professional speaker/lecturer for over 20 years and won numerous awards for he same (and also appear regularly on the radio). Pace is a subjective issue -- some people like how I present on video -- where I am very aware that the info needs to be clear -- and some don't. I also had serious surgical damage to my vocal chords several years ago (I could not speak at all for 3 months) and this inevitably impacts my delivery now.

This is a very good point. The initial plans for USB 3.0 did use a fibre optic cable to achieve the increased speed (in combination with the legacy wiring), but sadly this did not make it to the final version.

I have heard of this kind of problem with keyboards and mice not being picked up by USB 3.0 ports. I don't think you can fix the ports in any way. But your motherboard does have three USB 2.0 headers that you could connect to a bracket to give you some more USB 2.0 ports on the back of your machine.

Yes, you are right. It is always safest to have at least one USB 2.0 port on a PC -- like most laptops and desktops still do (aside from some Macs, apparently!),
