The red atemoya is quite rare, but not entirely unheard of. I think Miami Fruit is simply trying to gin up excitement so that people will spend $117 plus shipping for one fruit. I think, like the pink pineapple you reviewed a few months ago, the red atemoya's color is more spectacular than its flavor.
If I remember correctly, the great Annona expert Har Mahdeem said that it is a cross between a cherimoya and a red sugar apple. He was involved in breading a couple of red atemoya varieties, and there are several varieties to choose from. There might be a video on TH-cam of him talking about atemoyas, so go try and find it to learn more.
Also, the red coloration of red sugar apples is only passed onto about 10%-20% of seed grown trees. I would assume that the red atemoya's ability to pass on its red coloration to seedlings is no better, so you would need to plant and raise to fruiting age at least ten trees to (likely) guarantee you get one red atemoya.

Atemoyas do not grow true from seed, since they are hybrids. Even growing red sugar apples (Kampong Mauve) from seed, does not guarantee you will end up with a tree that produces reds. Although that fruit looked pretty good, in and out, I don't think the price is right, rare as it is. Thanks for sharing!

Atemoyas aren't all that rare, they're are some pretty big prolific trees here in South Florida, although that's a newer hybrid so its not all that popular, with its flavor being average as far as atemoyas go people don't often grow it here in their small dooryards, more of a novelty.
Rare annonas like Ilama are super rare, the trees are hard to find, they five you like 3 fruits in a good year that can sometimes crack and fall off the tree but the taste is absolutely exquisite. Or Biriba which when fully ripe can barely be handled let alone shipped.
There are endless hybrids between a. squamosa, a. Cherimola and a. Reticulata.
That red is definitely from a reticulata but it doesn't look like a cherilata (cherimoya X red custard apple).

    • @thedoors1388
      @thedoors1388 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

Ilama is a rare Annona, and I doubt Miami Fruit is going to have that one in stock anytime soon. If they did, based on the $117 they are charging for a red atemoya, they would charge $1117 for an ilama. Ilama is not even the rarest Annona being grown in Florida; I read of a rare fruit grower who last year successfully fruited Annona salzmannii, the beach sugar apple. There can't be more than a couple dozen growers with that one in their collection, much less a fruiting specimen.
Jared should check out the Annona Breeding Project and see if they will let him tour their collection.

@@thedoors1388 salmanii is a rare species because of its inferior eating quality along with posh-te and marolo. theyre not even cultivated in their native region, too many other superior varieties in the genus. people who grow them are generally collectors and are just interested in experimenting with something different in my experience. Fruits like ilama and rollinias can be excellent fruit and hard to source trees, usually not very productive

Nice, I wonder if you've tried Blitum capitatum, or strawberry spinach before. I used to grow it a lot & will have to start again.
Good in small gardens as you can eat the leaves like spinach & if you let it flower you get little berries that look like strawberries. Some people find the fruit doesn't taste like much but others like myself do find it quite flavourful.
Really enjoying the videos, so much I've never heard of before.

Just so you know if anyone tries to plant the seeds it is most likely NOT true to type meaning it will probably not produce a genetically identical copy of the tree it came from, or anything close to it. There is a small chance it will produce a tree that also produces red ones, but that is highly unlikely.

An atemoya is a hybrid of cherimoya(Annona cherimola) x sugar apple(Annona squamosa). A custard apple(Annona reticulata) is crossed to an atemoya, hence Temoylata.
There are also Cherilata that have more custard apple dna in it (phenotype).

Annona/Annonaceae fruits contain neurotoxins called acetogenins in relevant quantities, trying the pulp occasionally in small quantities is probably fine, but don´t consume large quantities and don´t eat them regularly, if you do only eat the ripe pulp, not the seeds, peel and definently not the leaves or bark!

Isn't it awful?? I'm wanting to try the fruits, so that I know which trees to start working on. I'll need to grow a few fruit cocktail trees, so I need to figure out what kind of rootstock to go with.

Love your work, and this little furrbaby will steal the show, if you are not carefull :D
This may be a silly question for the pros here:
I follow your channel for quiet a while now and was realy pumped, when i saw a green atemoya in our lokal fruit market. Here in Germany, we don´t get much fruit variaty. We have like 1000 types of apple but that´s it.
I brought it home and cut into it, having your words in mind, how it should taste and smell... But all i got was... barf. it reminded me of the time, i got norovirus. I felt ill right at the very moment.
Did a just had bad luck and i overripe fruit of was i just not ready and my german tastebuds and nose is just not prepared for this taste?

I had a similar experience when I tried my first cherimoya. I was determined to let it ripen enough, then let it get too ripe. I tasted it, and it was CLEARLY bad. The next one, ripened correctly, was a dream. 🥰 Try a new one, Alexander!

Where did the lore about lighting dragon eggs on fire to make them hatch come from? I remember I had this brown marble stone egg when I was a kid and I gathered up all the other kids in the neighborhood and told them that if we put this egg in a fire we can make it hatch, and everyone played along. Good times, still have that stone egg somewhere I think.
