Hi Melanie! Great video! I am currently a senior in highschool and I am really stressed about my college decision! My problem is I am super indecisive and I don’t know what career I want to do. I jump from criminal justice to psychology to art! Do you have any advice on how to figure out what major to do? I am considering going to a Christian private university or a public university. Congratulations on graduating!
I’m not Melanie but I can definitely give advice. If you want to be in school for your masters and doctorate I definitely recommend psychology. You can’t do much with a bachelors in psychology. I wouldn’t discourage you from doing art, but I would think about job security and see if you would have something available after you graduate. College is sooooooooo expensive so I based my decision off the jobs available and what I I love
Im not melanie either but I am a senior in college (attending a private christian university) majoring in Psych. I agree with the other person who gave you advice. If you want to work in the field of psychology, you will likely need to get a masters, if not a doctorate. But psychology is universally useful, so you could still make use of a bachelors. You just might need to be a little creative with how you use it. Criminal justice sounds like better job security, but idk what exactly your desired job is, so it depends. In my opinion, christian universities arent the best for arts, so I wouldnt bother with paying for an arts degree unless it’s a state university or an arts school (but that’s purely my opinion)!
Hi Olivia! I totally get where you're coming from, college decisions and choosing a major can be so extremely daunting... While I don't have much experience with the majors you're considering ( love the advice left from others below!) a couple things came to mind that I hope will help you with this decision! First, I think that it is perfectly okay to go into college undeclared as long as you have some sort of plan on how to gain that career clarity along the way ( think informational interviews, reading about the profession, or even taking a couple classes in or outside of school that are related to the topic). Another thing that I would consider if i were you is the degree structure at the schools you are considering. Some schools require you to apply for your major even after being admitted and it's also way more difficult to change majors at some schools than others if you do decide to switch. So, this is something that I would consider if you aren't super certain about the major you are entering with. Overall, i think that it's great to have many interests and part of the purpose of college is to help you discern what you are passionate about, so don't stress too much :)
