Building NEW UNIQUE FISH POND STRUCTURE - 10,000+ Rocks, Sunken Log Jam, Super Deep

  • In this video we work on the next step in converting a mud bottoms catfish pond into a sparkling clear mountain stream water for trout. We sink down some dead spruce trees into the depths of the pond to create a log jam which will provide shelter to the trout and shade. This will be crucial to their survival in the summer months as temperatures and water depths become a factor.
Transforming MUDDY POND into CRYSTAL TROUT HEAVEN!!! - 10,000+ Rocks, Sunken Log Jam, Now 20 ft Deep
Complete fish pond playlist: • Building a NEW FISH PO...
We've add over 10,000 rocks over top of geotextile fabric and sink a 10 ft, 21 diameter grain bin to the bottom of the original muddy trout pond to create crystal clear trout waters. Thanks to Cabela's and Bass Pro Shops and Princess Auto for your help in making this video!
The first fish pond transformation video: • STUNNING NEW FISH POND...
Unfortunately my pond in Northern Ontario is adjacent a swamp that is filled with muck and clay soil which makes a total mess for a trout pond, but we are doing something to fix this.
The pond trout are coming belly up and dying for some unknown reason. I spend the day trying to figure out why all the pond fish are dying. I test the water temperature, make sure the fish are getting food and oxygen, and check the water clarity.
The fastest way to dig a big pond is to use the help of a qualified excavator. This excavator normally digs out house foundations and the operator has years of experience digging giant holes in the ground and removing mountains of material.
In the previous episode we had Clarke from Lyndon Trout Ponds and Fish Hatchery measure water quality of our fish pond for oxygen and water temperature. This pond was also monitored year round to see if it holds enough water and has the depth the fish need to stay cold. Rainbow trout need good to excellent water quality and plenty of oxygen. Water flow is an asset to help fish spawn. We discovered that the water in our pond is filled continuously with the help of ground water and is very cold, even in the summer. Trout will die if water gets above 25 degrees Celsius. Shade also helps keep water cool and our pond is sheltered for a good part of the day with trees.
You will need to find out what kind of soil you are working with. Is it clay, clay-loam and sandy loam are best for holding water. You will want to avoid limestone, shale, sand and gravel-they leak. Except in our case since the gravel is actually part of the ground water, which is ideal. You can ask around to find out if your pond will leak or will hold water year round. You don't want your pond to dry up in the middle of the summer.
Our plan to excavate the remainder of the pond, pushing the size out to about a half acre in size and a water depth of around 8 feet. 15 feet is more ideal, but our base is shale and therefore can not be dug any deeper.
A trout pond is very difficult to establish, but it is very possible to do correctly if you know what the fish need.

Maybe something on the top edge of the grain ben to stop it from cutting ur fishing line might be a good idea. Split garden hose make or black plastic water line screwed on from outer edge so screws are not on the inside edge of ben to cause snags

I've seen foresters use a curled up piece of sheet steel to form a sort of sled face on the front of logs that they were pulling through the woods. (think car hood flipped upside down) It helped them ride up over low stumps and deflect off of standing trees. They just punched a hole in the curled front to pass the dragline through and pilled the front of the logs onto the sheet. After passing the dragline through the hole it was wrapped around and fastened to the logs. It worked really well and would probably keep the snow from building up in front of your logs and stalling you out. Just an idea.

make sure that you buy zinc sacrificial anodes for boats or this bin will rust out quickly.
It would have made more sense to rent a larger escavator from the beginning. Large enough that it would have sat outside of the pond and dug down. That way you wouldn't be pushing the sides in as much while digging. Combined with how much quicker it would have dug, this would have been much faster.
While digging out the pond, the grain bin could have been constructed out of the pond and then lowered in with the escavator.
Then you could put geo over the bin, and backfilled outside the bins with dirt. Then create the pond contours and placing rocks for the bottom of the pond. A final layer of geo over the pond contours and layers of rock.
Also building der water water proof "creeks" for the springs that would direct their water into the bin.
If you will have waterfall(s), make sure to run a big enough pipe before putting in the final rock layers.
With how deep this pond is, the trout will be safe from predators. If you want, put in a dead tree in the bottom.
This will give you a pond that you can safely jump into.

The tool is called a "drift" or a "drift pin" or, if it is somewhat larger than yours, a "drift bar". If it had an open end wrench on the untapered end it would be called a "spud wrench". Probably the most accurate name, considering that you are using it the way that you are, would be a "bull pin". It is strictly for aligning two holes.

Please think of adding pumps to move water as well as oxygenate they water better. I would wash the pond with the pump once it's all done. The silt should collect at the bottom. Clean that out. Then let fill. You need a spot with some plants in a corner that way the intake for the pump creates a draw. The plant roots will act as a filter and keep fish away from the pump. Put the pump in a pipe with holes drilled inside the pipe. Put a "p trap" style top for water to enter but not plants. You can do this for the overflow as well since it has constant water. Looks really good to me. Maybe metal bracing from the top of panels to a couple anchors inner the rocks is my only improvement I could think of. Amazing work

    • @TheWoodedBeardsman
      @TheWoodedBeardsman  ปีที่แล้ว

The only problem with the pump is that we don't have any power to run them, so we need something that will run off solar. We'll try.

I think you might need a retaining wall for that "shaded" area. Maybe a cement culvert and some larger rocks.
I like how your idea of backfilling around the rest. I suggest with with rocks instaad of dirt, all the way to the rim.
I keep looking at the rim and thinking of someone jumping in and hitting that edge. It doesn't matter how you hit it, it's gonna hurt. That "Stiffener should help

37:00 maybe you solved the muck issue. The aerator is the cause of the muddy water. Maybe you only needed to put that on a concrete platform. 🤔

It only causes a problem as soon as it's put in the pond. The biggest issue is likely coming from the fish swimming around tbh.

I'm still trying to figure out if ya'll think bass, catfish, and panfish are inedible..lol The pond should be amazing in the end, and adding the "log jam" may draw beavers in, another edible specie. Love what ya'll are doing ❤️

Brown trout would do really well in there. We stock them they grow crazy fast and are very strong. There is a great guy name Bruce from Owen sound has them. Maybe you get your rainbow from there already?

I got all my fish from Lyndon Trout Hatchery, but it would be fun to add in a few brown and brook trout! Maybe I'll look him up!

@@TheWoodedBeardsman ya he has rainbows as well. But brown trout are something special! They would get dark yellow in your pond there
