    What other secrets do you know now that you wish you knew when you started?

    • @rkdmiii
      @rkdmiii 2 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      1. Old tutorials suggesting you mix drums to -10db are now irrelevant.
      2. Setting up a master channel that 'fake masters' your music and mixing into that is essential when using analyzers to compare your track to mastered tracks.
      3. If it sounds right to you, that is more important than following directions.
      4. Never, ever, ever, ever delete the original synth patch; parallel mix it into your hyper-aliased, hyper-effected version.
      5. The texture of high energy sounds comes from a rapid lfo affecting at least one of the oscillators. If your synth sounds too vanilla and clean, tweak this before layering other sounds.
      6. Trackspacer. Trackspacer. Trackspacer.
      7. Clippers are better than limiters in mixing.
      8. Always reduce the volume to send -18db into plugins whenever you can.
      9. Watch more Alice.

      Some of it might be redundant but anyway:
      1. EQ only when really necessary and learn when it is. Its possible to get pretty ok mixes without any eq at all.
      2. Don´t be afraid to use visual references (tonal balance control) ,even though your ears should have the last call, it helps to get you in the ballpark and lets you make more informed desicions of why you want to break the rules. Also if done right it helps training your ears.
      3. Make your music sound as good as you can with using as little processing as you can.
      4. Compression is overrated, except for drums.
      5. Pay for your plugins, you value them more which helps learning them inside out. In general a few plugins you know very well are way more usefull than having all the "pro" stuff and not knowing what to do with it.
      6. LEARN YOU DAW INSIDE OUT FIRST (you dont need any external plugins to get good mixes if you know the science, and it also spares you a lot of $ cause you will know what plugins you want and why.)
      7. If you have the money don't be afraid to invest in Education. Especially nowadays there are so many renowned producers sharing their Knowlege, use it if you can!
      8. Have a long breath and you will get there, I promise. After all a lot of stuff is just practice practice practice.
      9. If you want to be good don't look for a shortcut. Do the dirty work!

      Ergonomics - a good mouse, keyboard, desk and screen setup can be way more beneficial to the process and result over miscellaneous gear and VSTs

    • @iagmusicandflying
      @iagmusicandflying 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@weselle1391 Good ergonomics will save you from doctor's visits, wearing braces, PT, and even surgery. Take care of your body and it will take care of you! Keep your wrists straight as much as possible, keep feet flat on on the floor or a foot rest, get a sit/stand hybrid desk if you can afford it. Be sure to take quick breaks once an hour so so and move for just a couple minutes ("sitting is the new smoking"). Keep monitors close to eye level to keep from straining your neck.
      I was fortunate to have trained under one of the world's foremost office ergonomics experts when I was in college a few decades ago, and as a software engineer by day and a musician and now producer by night, I have followed his advice for the last 35 years and have avoided many of the physical issues that commonly plague all of these professions. My worst of it is some mild carpal tunnel that I keep in check with some stretching exercises and VERY occasional wrist brace use.

    So true. I think one of the most important habits is “organization”. And learning about the things available to you, the types of tools, libraries, and similar things you have helps a lot along the way. Another issue may be to remember that the visual measurement data provided by the tools is a reference and to make the final decision by listening. Of course, being familiar with the system you use to listen is very important at this point.

    Hi Alice, really good tips you have! Straight to the point without trying to market to us, I like it. Hard work definitely pays off. This is a serious discipline and not something one can be casual about.
    A big lesson I’ve learned is not to do too much with analog saturation whether it’s plugins or my Fusion. Since it’s non-linear, it’s tough to discern what’s the right amount at times. I just watched a video about mastering with Fusion and the guy showed what each module does with graphic representation. Yeah, I learned I have to back off the vintage drive and density for sure.
    Sometimes you work on something a long time and you don’t realize that you don’t need to saturate it so much. I’m guessing in an all analog studio that they could only make things so loud or saturated before the equipment had a problem and didn’t have to worry as much.
    Keep up the great work and I will be watching more of your videos!

    Alice, fire content as usual! 3:21 - Yes, and also there's nothing wrong with fanboy / fangirl tracks. I've heard Dada Life talking about that. One can learn a crap tone copying, and recreating their favorite tracks.
    There is nothing wrong with citation either - people are using this all the time. As always, it's all about the context.
    Honestly, if someone can make a fire track, shamelessly copying, and have the finesse to pull that off and that track becomes organically theirs - that's some freaking genius stuff and we are all jealous.
    But if you can't pull off that trick, release it and get a copyright strike - jokes on you lol.
    To summarize - copying is one of the best and overlooked tools IMO, especially if you can backtrack and feel why certain things were done at a certain point in the song.
    And if you follow Alice's channel - you'll learn how to make that shit your own 😀

    I got myself some low cost M-audio studio speakers, approximately 320 euro for the two. I just want to enjoy music at fair quality. Small room, empty walls.
    What shape sound treatment (foam i guess?) Is best? I am not getting bass ringing.
    Recorded the room feedback and compared with original track and most of the noise comes from the 9kHz range and up.

    May I add one? Are you stuck getting a good kick like "that song"? Just sample it. Download the song and sample the kick. You'll save a TON of time to focus on the rest of the track. You are going to have plenty of time later to make your own perfect kick, eventually, but until then your work flow will benefit immensely.

  • @PhreaSpirit
    @PhreaSpirit ปีที่แล้ว

    After some trials and errors i realized that spectrum analyazer is a great tool to compare your track to the one in the same genre. I mean, there are tons of legendary records from the past that don't look great on the analyzer, but sound great. So don't go crazy if your mix's spectrum lacks high or mids. Depends on the genre and feel you want to give to your track. I have tons of tracks that look amazing in analyzer, but soundslike crap. Probably obvious, but still.

    • @Fire-Toolz
      @Fire-Toolz ปีที่แล้ว

      What do you mean by looking great in an analyzer? A spectrum analyzer is only telling you about the volume of audio information in any given frequency band. It doesn't say anything about tone, texture, timbre, rhythm, stereo field, compressor settings, delay repeats, reverb sustain, modulation rate, melody, harmony, chords, or anything about the relationship between elements. It's simply a volume meter. You should never ever judge a song's quality by the way a spectrum analyzer looks! This is one of the most common problems in mixing and producing- mixing with your eyes. We need to be mixing with our ears!
