  • Moorreesburg is a rural town situated about 90 kilometres north of Cape Town, in the Western Cape province of South Africa. It was laid out in 1879 on the farm Hooikraal, was administered by a village management board from 1882 and attained municipal status in 1909.
Moorreesburg was named after J.C. le Febre Moorrees (1807 - 1885), minister of the Swartland congregation of the Nederduitse Gereformeerde Kerk from 1833 to 1881.
The town with the friendly people and well known wheatfields is only an hour away from Cape Town and 70km from the West Coast. Moorreesburg is a perfect base to break away from the city's hustle and bustle.

A true portrayal of Moorreesberg in Summer. But the rest of the year paints a different picture. After the first rains and the sowing of wheat and Canola seed, the lands change to shades of green and end up bright yellow and gold. So beautiful. On a Saterday, the town is packed with shoppers, socialising and spending their hard earned wages. So these country towns are alive and well. I know as ive lived in Piketberg, the town just further along.

Hmm… Sad. Literally a dying community. Mind you, comparison with the Free State would be a salutary illustration of the decline of such communities.

We didn't find it a dying community at all. Life is not easy l, but the people are remarkable.

@@AfricanTravelCrew Remarkable in what way? Your series, whilst supremely admirable in recording community strength, in this instance, exhibits ageing decline. In this video I see nothing "remarkable" (sic.). It is a record of declining aspirations, as there are no younger inhabitants in your video to replace the clearly elderly population.

@@jamesarc8192 this particular town we asked the older inhabitants to interview as we wanted a bit of the history. We have since moved forward and started looking at including the younger new generation. As we don't want, as you pointed out, not to see just "old people". I hope that makes sense.

@@AfricanTravelCrew Glad to hear your new aspirations in recording hope, so long as there is no whitewash. Sadly, I expect you may struggle. If you want sponsorship I may suggest Balfour in the Eastern Cape as a tragic example of heart rending decay.
