Lutzville, West Coast South Africa

Lutzville is a settlement in West Coast District Municipality in the Western Cape province of South Africa. It resides under the Matzikama Local Municipality.
Village 22 km north-west of Vredendal and 45 km west of Vanrhynsdorp. Established in August 1923 as Vlermuisklip, but later (~1950) renamed after its founder, Johan J Lutz.
Lutzville is located next to the Olifants River and at high tide it is possible to navigate in a flat-bottomed boat to Papendorp, about 30 km downstream near the river's mouth. Lutzville Vineyards is located here, origin of the splendid Lutzville and Cape Diamond Wines. The distinctive location of Lutzville Vineyards combined with cool misty sea breezes and large temperature differences between day and night is the perfect ingredient for the superior aromas and flavours you experience in every bottle of wine.
Lutzville is synonymous with quality wine, beautiful spring flowers, the Atlantic, unforgettable holiday experiences, a moderate climate and of course, the friendly people.
The town Lutzville was established in 1923 and named after Johan Lutz, an irrigation engineer who worked on the Clanwilliam Dam and also surveyed the Lutzville area for agricultural development. The town has a population of just over 5 000 and services a farming community that produces wine and cultivates beans and tomatoes for the canning industry.
The Sishen-Saldanha railway bridge over the Olifants River is worth a brief stop on your journey too. Completed in 1975, the bridge is 1 035m high, supported by 22 pillars that each extend 45m into the river bed.
