    About my BetterHelp sponsorship - I want to share that I do look into each sponsor I accept. I don't take sponsorships lightly and have turned down way more than I've accepted because I don't endorse the product or it's not a good fit with the channel. I looked into BetterHelp before I accepted the sponsorship and learned that they have addressed and corrected the issues that people were concerned with.
    The channel Cinema Therapy stopped promoting BetterHelp when the issues arose in 2023, but now have resumed their sponsorship after working closely with the company. They have explained in detail, what the issues were, how they were corrected and some of the misinformation that is out there about BetterHelp: www.reddit.com/r/cinema_therapy/comments/1dpriql/addressing_the_betterhelp_concerns_headon_deep/
    I am a huge supporter of online therapy and will continue to support it via the BetterHelp sponsorship. BetterHelp may not be for you, but it is a good fit for a lot of people.

    Though I personally knew the story of Ada, I am glad you covered it so more people hear about it, and from such a great storyteller too. I would just add that one of the reasons we didn't hear more about her story is because, by all accounts, she really hated attention and stayed away from the media. She was an introvert and once this "adventure" was over, she preferred privacy and quiet life and wasn't seeking fame and glory.

    • @adventuresgonewrong
      @adventuresgonewrong  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

      Yes that is so true. She hated the media who was hounding her, plus she was blamed for so much when in reality she persevered and survived.

    The part that inspired me most was when she carried her son. Survived an abusive husband, lost children, had a sick child, carried him to town and then gave him up for his sake. This was one amazing young lady. Not surprized she made it.

    TY for this account.
    About 25 years ago, I read another book about a group of stranded explorers that walked from Wrangle Island to Alaska, about 700 miles. The book was put together by the niece of one of the men on the expedition. She used his diaries and remembrances to try to provide as accurate an account as she could. Her uncle was born prematurely, and wasn't expected to survive, leave alone thrive. If I remember correctly, the uncle lived to be 93 - advanced old age by any standard. I've searched for the title of the book, but haven't come across it, or even anything close to an account of this expedition. Only the story you've related comes up.
    The CBC Canadian history series made in the 90s, has a surprising account of dealing with polar bears, gleaned from David Thompson's diaries. As a teen, he was in what is now Churchill, when the polar bears were gathered on the shore. Of course he was scared poop-less. The natives told him to just walk past them and don't look at them and they won't attack. I'm not sure if I could follow that strategy, but it seemed to work for him. He mapped about 1/3 of North America, and also lived to a ripe old age. Another surprising anecdote from that time was the natives insisting it was necessary to have women on the trip, because who would carry the heavy packs?
    It is sad that David Thompson's story is almost unknown. He lived an extremely eventful and productive life, his mapping being used for generations. As far as I've been able to tell, his diaries are now in some archive and are not published or publicly available. He did try to publish them in his lifetime, but couldn't get them printed for public consumption. He is a forgotten explorer, not given near as much credit as he deserves.

    • @adventuresgonewrong
      @adventuresgonewrong  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      That is wild you mention David Thompson. My old junior high school is named after him and a few years ago I started researching him out of curiosity because in school we didn’t learn a lot about him. You’ve just given me more incentive to get back into his story! And that story about just walking past the polar bears… what! 🤣😳

    Wrangel Island is 87 miles/ 140 km. from mainland Russia, about 365 miles / 587.5 kilometers from Alaska, and about 798 miles / 1.28 megameters from Canada (Herschel Island used as reference). Wild to think that someone once considered claiming an island in the arctic that close to Russia for Great Britain/Canada.

    Ada is definitely the hero in this story! I’m happy her and Vic were rescued. Too bad the others were never found. I feel for their families. 😢

    Geez, I don't know where you keep finding these amazing historical incidents that no one else has covered. Well done, and thank you--great channel! P.S. according to that encyclopedia article, pretty sure I have scurvy. Although most people are still acting like they like me. I'm sure that won't last, though.

    Yikes, the Antarctic was much kinder to Shackleton and his crew than the Arctic was to this ill-fated expedition. Ada should have listened to that shaman! Glad Vic the cat made it out of there! Thanks for another great story!

    I am not a writer nor ‘educated’ & this is the type of grit & basic survival which puts - without dismissing folk that’ve endured real cruelty , gives modern problems utter hardship perspective. Without Electricity our lives will be doomed.. this is what terrifies me right now. Ada was the real deal.

    I learned about Ada Blackjack recently and as usual learned so much from your telling. There are so many layers to her life. The obituary of her first husband, who was apparently well known himself, claiming that he died because “the Arctic heroine Ada and her son were playing in the white world,” or something to that effect. Now, I am sitting here wondering who was this well known E. Blackjack, and how was she known as an arctic heroine and then forgotten, what was going on with her previous relationship and presumably her son‘s father, did this have anything to do with her returning to Alaska? Will she come somehow caught in between these two worlds? And then there’s the drama of the young woman alone for months among these testosterone fueled men, becoming an enamored with them despite herself…she’s in her early 20s so….etc.!!!

      Must be interesting to experience the great outdoors in Canada 🇨🇦 I’m from a small town where we had the beach at one end and the outback behind us and around us. As an adult, Canada 🇨🇦 looks like a great place for a holiday destination to go explore some of the beautiful places I’ve seen only in videos like 👍 yours. I love your reciting of the Mount Everest tragedy in 1996, I really enjoyed seeing The events as they played out, it must have been a brutal ordeal for the survivors of that blizzard, and poor Beck Weathers, abandoned time and time again, I guess the allure of climbing would have paled against actually being able to hug his lovely wife peach, and his children after the nightmare of being so high on the 10 th of may 1996. And I’m baffled by the fact that David Brashears and his I max team went down due to the forecast of bad weather coming in. So I don’t understand why rob hall and Scott Fischer led their respective teams into the blizzard 🥶 that claimed peoples lives and cost so many families so much pain. It bothered me so much, the fact that David Brashears and his I max team came across the frozen 🥶 recently deceased bodies of people whom they had known . How could anyone deal with such an awful experience on Everest. Boggles my mind. Beck Weathers has said that climbing Everest is not an accomplishment in itself, but rather how much a person is revealed, moral courage, is what he actually said. I’m fascinated by high altitude climbing, but the cost and the risk is too high for me. You did a great job covering it. Parts 1, 2, and 3❤️❤️
