My 590SG is a great radio, I moved up from the TS-140. I like the fact that most functions are done by the buttons on the front. I don't need a waterfall!
Incredibly simple to operate, excellent receive sensitivity, and a boatload of other nice features that I won’t mention. And it’s priced at a very affordable level. I’m incredibly happy with this purchase.
I love this radio, started with a 590s off of ebay, bought 590sg new in march, could not be happier. Paired mine with a panadapter and MFJ-939K for bigger antennas, great set up, I even take it portable for POTA , however it does not leave the camper. Thanks nice video.
Good video up to now. great demonstration Also, this radio takes you back to basics with modern features, and, its great piece of furniture in the shack Thanks.
I love my TS590SG with RSP2pro as panadapter. I use it mainly in CW and for contests, occasionally in digital modes. As a second radio I would eventually buy another one TS590SG or a TS890. Wonderful radio!
I have a ‘S’ model alongside my DX10 and there is something so great about the Kenwood I can’t put into words. It’s solidly built and heavy, DSP not as great as the Yaesu but I can live with that. I always get comments comment on the quality of the audio. 👍🏻
Interesting. FYI - About 6 years ago, I sold my TS-590S to another Ham. He already owned an ICOM IC-7300 as his primary rig. He bought the Kenwood TS-590S from me as a backup rig. Guess what? Shortly after he received the TS-590S from me, he emailed me back and said that the TS-590S is now his PRIMARY rig!
Started with a TS 2000E and loved it made the mistake of moving to 7300 nice radio but I didn't get on with the touch screen operation so came back to the 590SG and fell back in love with Kenwood. My 590SG is used mainly in Data mode but is used in SSB and FM love the simple operation of NB and NR to remove the noise we dont like hearing. Tony's comment is the 590SG worth it, most certainly is Thanks Kenwood for a superb affordable radio
I used an Icom IC-728 for over 20 years. I love that radio. I still have it, and it still works great. But I started wanting something new. What I did not want is one of those video game radios with the brightly colored, confusing and distracting waterfall displays. I consider those to be garbage. I wanted something that looked and worked like an actual radio. Something similar to my 30 year old Icom. I decided on the Kenwood TS-590SG. I've had it for just over a year now, and am very happy with it. I highly recommend it over something like the Yaesu FT-991A, Icom IC-9700, or Icom IC-7300.
I loved my 590sg I only sold it to buy my TS890s from you, I don’t regret that but I will buy another one eventually, it will make a second receiver and a perfect back up set, John M0CDL Fists,
I've had my Kenwood TS-590SG for a few years now, and I love it! I do mostly FT8, but also some CW, RTTY, & SSB contesting. I have yet to set up the band scope with the DRV port. 73 Paul AA1SU
I like my TS-590SG too. I've had it for a few years. I have never really looked into adding a panadapter, that's why I'm looking at this video. de KM1Z
I have 2 sg's. Love the build quality and superb performance. That being said both of mine were 20 cycles low. Slight adjustment of the local oscillator and it's perfectly. on frequency rock solid. On long winded qso's she gets good and hot but doesn't seem to be a problem. Fan activates seldom. It's a keeper.
Kenwood in my opinion is the best radio producer. Yea my 705 has a soft spot but Kenwood Menus just fit with the working of my Brain. 👍👍 and they sound fantastic
Thanks for the lesson! I a, almost tempted to try FT8 after your explanation, the best I have seen. I hope that Kenwood will bring out a replacement for the 990, their engineering is excelent and the audio world renowned. Already subscribed and thumbed up! 73 Jim M7BXT
I have always owned and used Kenwood HF radios from my TS-520 to a TS-850 and now a TS-870. I have used the TS-850 and now my TS-870 as remote stations using RCForb. I love the 870. It's a super radio. I tell others that own Icom that they are a poor mans Kenwood! hi hi. I have a larhe group of Yls from 8 countries on 4 continents that do operations throuigh my remote and we livestream those operations. They are all available on my TH-cam channel. 73 for now, Rob, VE3PCP
The performance PF button is the same idea that the CS button does on the Yaesu radios and has done for years. The TS590SG is still worth it in 2023 however most folk are guided by what they see on the "Sherwood" table...If the FTDX-10 had 2 antenna sockets I think it would be no contest..
I just found your video. I appreciate you posting it. So essentially by interfacing the SDR Play with the TS-590SG, you now have a two rx system, with a panadapter. This same set up would work (I assume) with the TS-890S so then you'd have a two rx system with the much less expensive SDR play as the second rx., instead of a TS-590SG. 73 de WA3RSL
I have at 590SG, and it has a lot of analog controls and menus to configure any way you want. I don't contest and the USB port is all I need for now in terms of a 100-Watt HF/digital rig.
Won't be parting with my TS-590SG for a long while, performance equals my FT5000MP-LTD in so many ways And now that Yaesu don't seem want to support serious V-UHF operation by removing transverter ability it's a no-brainer for me to keep as I still prefer a 'hand's-on' radio in my hobby activity and not an extension of a PC.
And thank goodness it doesn't utilize a waterfall (it is a radio, not a smart phone. The AT's in Kenwoods are greater than a $400 value, and the audio in TX and RX is second to none.
I would think a class leading receiver WITHOUT a pan-adapter means you save time chasing weak signals that you can actually hear, rather than just see.👍
How do I get swr reading bar to come on screen guys on a ts590s..! In detail..! There’s actually a sticker on mine with your shop on it..! Mint condition and working great..
My ALC when I talk is going over the wee bars..!! How do I lower it so I’m not possibly overdriving..! Do I turn mic gain down just..?? How do adjust it so I’m not going over the ALC blobs/bars..! Thanks..! Mark..
Yes, the SDR can easily be a second receiver. You can tune the SDR separate from the radio using the same antenna. Set it up like this video, maybe watch a few videos on the SDRPlay set up and use and your in business. It’s quite easy and very useful
Can you setup 10 / 6 meter repeaters with offsets and tone on this radio I’m sure there is lots of hams out there that has or will get a Kenwood TS-590sg this Christmas ,If the 10 meter band continues to be as hot as it has been it would be a lot of fun … Could you do a Video … How to setup repeaters on the TS-590sg and save them to memory. Thanks and Happy Holidays from w4wsx
I love the look and feel of these radios - but - Will a SDRPlay DX or Duo give the same performance on the receive side ? Add an Elad TM-2 and you have the nice tuning controls.
ALERT - Sadly, Kenwood recently stopped manufacturing their MC-60A desk mic (about $170-180). Now?... They appear to only offer the MC-90 desk mic (about $300-325). Also, the cost of the MC-43S hand mic is now at $70.
Because you don't get "more" with the FTDX10 unless you're referring to more confusing menus, more horrible UI, more frustration with only a single antenna port, more fragile finals, etc. Both are outstanding radios in their own right, but blanket statements claiming one to be clearly superior to the other means you're not considering ALL the pros and cons of both transceivers...because the TS-590SG certainly has a number of significant benefits over the DX10. The DX10 may be better for you, but that won't be the case for everyone.
Appears Yaesu is designing to meet test specifications. Operating a Kenwood is more enjoyable, feels like a piec of gear. Icom's goal, is to sell the next thing. In the end, people come back to Kenwood. I know I sure am and will likely neverbiy an Icom or Yaesu again.
A nice radio no doubt, but Kenwood just don't invest in their product development and leave things in production until they become very out of date. Anyone who has used a waterfall display for five minutes would never want to be without one again.
Best thumbnail ever!
My 590SG is a great radio, I moved up from the TS-140. I like the fact that most functions are done by the buttons on the front. I don't need a waterfall!
waterfall is nice but i am old skool normal hf is fine.
What an excellent video. As a complete beginner this is the first time I've seen what FT8 is actually about.
Incredibly simple to operate, excellent receive sensitivity, and a boatload of other nice features that I won’t mention. And it’s priced at a very affordable level. I’m incredibly happy with this purchase.
Yes the Receiver is off the chart.
I got a Kenwood TS-570S and really love it!
Great radio i had the 570 dge . Receiver was just wow .
Thank you for the brilliant and informative video. I’ve been considering this Kenwood for a while now. Regards, John from Tampa Fl USA

Very informative as always. I love my 590SG great receive and I have been told the audio is great.
I really love and enjoy the simplicity of my ts-590sg. Really outstanding radio. Thanks for a great video....
I've not used a Kenwood yet, but I love the modern functionality with the analogue feel of buttons and diala.
I love my TS590SG with RSP2pro as panadapter.

Great video Tony, Gary & Richard
I still own a 570 DGE from new and was thinking of upgrading some time soon !! This Radio is food for thought 🤔🤔👍
I LOVE my 590! Just got an 890 last December - worlds different - but the 590 is so simple to use!!
I don't have an HF rig yet as I can't afford any but this one is a dream for sure. Maybe one day!

I still love my TS-590SG, it is now backup to my FTDX10 but it has some attributes that still make it a great rig.
Backup, are u kidding...590 has an actual receive ant input, two ant outputs plus it's a superhet which is still superior to an SDR
What's the point of having these things ?!? I'm a bit of a nerd so I want to fool around on these things but for practical daily use what's the use ?

Put in the high stability TXco and its one of THE BEST out there for the price! Others dont have the roofing filters
Always loved kenwood and the 590 in my opinion is still a good contender in modern times
This is a solid performing rig...my favourite, by far. No fish finder display? No problem, don't need or want it.
Top video team. Had a 590s & regret selling it. Seriously considering the sg version
Fantastic video. Loved the explanation of the setup.
I have two of these: 590S and the 590SG. They are an excellent value. I beat them to death on CW. Also use the SG with SDR UNO. You can't beat it!...
I sincerely hope it’s relevant. I recently bought a used one from you. I love it! 73 de M7CUN
Good rig, one negative though is kenwood have stopped making the vgs-1 unit for it and it is now extremely hard to get hold of one.
Best bang for the buck in this class. Had 2 TS590 S and one TS590SG, and will be getting another one when finances allow.
& btw, an excellent narration re the bells & whistles on this FB rig!😃🇺🇸
Tony in the thumbnail is brilliant
Love Kenwood! Tnx for a interesting video.
love all the kenwood range would love to know of any future new radios
Hell yeah it's worth it.
Consider how many made the mistake of buying a 7300 like I did.
Ho Bam, what don't you like about the 7300 I'm thinking of getting one but i'm getting lots of conflicting advice, 73.

Sounds like Kenwood are thinking of dropping the 590SG 🤔
but why would you go with this kenwood when for a better price and you get more with a ftdx10?
Personal preference, some people prefer buttons particularly if hands are a bit shaky.
More what?
Because you don't get "more" with the FTDX10 unless you're referring to more confusing menus, more horrible UI, more frustration with only a single antenna port, more fragile finals, etc. Both are outstanding radios in their own right, but blanket statements claiming one to be clearly superior to the other means you're not considering ALL the pros and cons of both transceivers...because the TS-590SG certainly has a number of significant benefits over the DX10.
