    As a longtime viewer I know you don't go in for high gloss finishes but you sure know how to get one when you want it. Bravo.

    Thank you for sharing this informative video Al. Personally my "default" finish has always been sanding to 240gr, 2 coats of sanding sealer, denibbing between. YG, YG Microfine, Hampshire Sheen High Gloss then Hampshire Sheen Microfine. This has given me reliable, durable and consistent results. Conversely I've had good results with OB Shine juice as well sitting on top of YG. I'll be giving your laquer concept a go. Thank you for the time and effort in putting this together and sharing with the woodturning community.

    Oh my. I once saw a beautiful block of agate, and I assure you, it had exact the same colours as this bowl. That agate fascinated me, the richness of the colours and the shapes they formed - but let me tell you, Al, your bowl is even better looking. A rock is a rock, and nothing will change that, but this is a living material, and I saw it growing beautiful under your hands. Thanks for sharing, and take care!

    Al, thanks again for another great video. A lot of people talk in videos about not boring you with the sanding. I love sanding, because you can watch the transformation of your piece as with the finish you did. I am inspired by your work. When I do a segmented bowl, I always use your star design in the bottoms that you shared how to do them in your video. Looking forward to your next inspiration.

    Fabulous finish. As I was watching, I thought the shine juice after the lacquer would not do any thing and maybe take some of the shine away. I was shocked to see how much more it did shine when you stopped the lathe. Amazing Al.
    I am one who likes a more natural finish and not so much gloss. But I know people who want it to be like glass, so it is good to know how to rub in a glass-like finish.
    Thanks for sharing. You always do such great work.

    Al I have always respected what you have taught and what you have to offer the woodturning world. I 100% agree with you here though. I also use Yorkshire Grit and the Yorkshire Grit micro-fine. The micro fine itself just gives that extra luster to the pieces themselves! I also want to see this piece completed... Many blessings to you!

  • @RickTurnsWoodturning
    @RickTurnsWoodturning 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    That is a great finish, Al! So your procedure is: Yorkshire grit, friction polish, lacquer, Yorkshire grit micro-fine, friction polish. Is that the right order?

    • @rebelsailor263
      @rebelsailor263 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good to see you again Rick.
      In this case you are correct on the order I did it but if I was to do it again I would do my sanding including the steel wool and apply YG. I would at that time apply lacquer, sand it down to break the shine a bit that micro buff with YG fine and rub buff it a couple of times with OB or your finish of choice.

    I guess it depends upon the display monitor being used to view the video but I thought the finish was excellent before the micro-fine. Regardless I appreciated the detail you went into showing the various steps needed to achieve a fine finish. too many of the video producers now avoid showing any sanding as they say it is boring. I keep trying to point out, as you did, that it's important to see the technique used. I don't have to see every grit used but I like to see the first one so I know how it is done. There are several techniques used in sanding. It's nice to know which is used for any particular project. Thanks for your effort. You always produce a good video.

    That is a superb finish Al, I'm a big fan of YG too and since purchasing my new lathe with its good range of speeds, find that it puts on an even better finish. Just one question my friend , is it true that ob shine has a short shelf life?
    Brilliant video mate and as always it inspires us to achieve even better!

    What lacquer are you using to brush on, and how much time elapsed between the application of the lacquer and the sanding with the steel wool?

    • @AlFurtado
      @AlFurtado  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I used Dept I think it was my favorite. dries almost instantly so within 15 min I would be friction polishing. I would apply OB shine juice after sanding to give me a deep shine in most cases.

    Hello Al', another helpful presentation thanks for sharing. What was the lacquer that you used? amazed how quicly it dried for you to be able to use wire wool so soon after applying it, thank you and regards, Tony (UK)

    • @rebelsailor263
      @rebelsailor263 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The lacquer I use is Minwax clear semi gloss. (I believe) as I am answering from the job site.
      I waited 15 minutes before sanding with steel wool. I should have placed a notation there sorry

    Beautiful bowl Al. I have nothing against Yorkshire grit and I agree it is a great product, but how can you say that everyone else's paste could never be as good? Have you tried every type of abrasive paste ever made? I doubt it. I understand that you love the product you use. I understand not wanting to try anything else when what you have works for you. But to tell all the other manufacturers that there products can never be as good is not nice.

      You are absolutely correct. I probably didn't mean it quite that way but I guess it came out a bit strong. Sorry.
