I was a goth girl and obligatory pop hater as a teen in the 90's-00's. And I HATED the purity culture bullshit image forced on girl stars SO much. But when Britney shaved her head... I was like yes girl, I get you, fuck that shit up. I instantly changed my mind and liked her. And all her music grew on me since then. Her "cringe" insta videos are rad. Its her "fuck you" to everyone who tries to police her. Leave Britney alone! LOL. Get it girl!
I hate that people are saying to look her up again because of those cringy dance videos. She's not harming anyone, people have right to be cringy, she's probably because of her life still trying to find herself and just enjoying her freedom to do what she wants.

Relationships are always a woman's work. Men have been expected to put zero actual effort into relationships since forever, and it's built into every nuance of the way we speak.
Right, and when a woman puts in all of this effort to try to work out their failing relationship with her man, who puts in no effort...it's then suddenly becomes all of her fault, when it doesn't get rekindled.That's so emotionally exhausting and stressful!!! Yup. I was 17 and can confirm. One of the grossest memories I had at this time was going to my best friend's pool party with the whole neighborhood there and one of the adult neighborhood men thought it was okay to make really inappropriate comments about how my little sister--who was 13!!!--and I looked in our swimsuits. And none of the other adults who overheard blinked an eye.
Yep it was crazy. I was a teenage girl in the early 00s and that environment was so toxic.... You were either considered too slutty or too ugly, nothing in between.. while in reality, we were literally just kids.... I think this had a big impact on me growing up l, same for so many girls, it makes me sad :(
Britney's story illustrates so clearly and devastatingly the misogyny, ableism and the mental health stigma in our society. It's so sickening. The 90s/early 00's misogyny was something else. I'm the same age as Britney/Christina, and it was a wild time growing up with 'role models' that people openly disparaged simply for being girls. With how people acted, you'd think a crop top was the worst thing a girl could wear. And talking about her virginity on TV... like that was just how it was back then. At my public high school they had a group come and make us all take a "save your virginity" type pledge. Yes... in PUBLIC school lmao.
Yeah I’m a decade older and this shit drove me insane. They never asked boy bands about their virginity. Let alone REPEATEDLY for years! Never shamed them for being shirtless or having all of their buttons undone in videos or performing. Never slut shamed them for having girls like them or any risqué lyrics. Their magazine covers were never vilified. The double standard was insane. The magazines put photos of women getting in and out of cars (sports cars being very low can be very hard to get out of in a dress) showing their underwear or online if you could see a nip slip or more. The woman who said if she could she’d shoot Britney in the head should have been charged as that’s a damn threat. Because why lady? You’re finding your boys bedsheets stiff because they’re just maturing sexually as healthy human beings do? So it’s Britney’s fault? And people who hate on Britney now…she’s just dancing. She’s not hurting anyone. She likes being nude and she looks great and it drives her family crazy so more power to her. Why people are so freaked out over the human body. Let her live. Let her be happy. For once. I remember Jessica Simpson just ripping on other female singers saying all of the things she’d NEVER do (like show her belly although she already did) and then coming out with one of the most explicit music videos for Dukes of Hazzard. I’m no prude but what they had her do, the poses weren’t even being a bit coy, it was pure exploitation with nothing to the imagination because she couldn’t sing (sorry) so she went where the money was. Luckily she landed a brand deal where a company puts her name on clothes so that’s good for her. But she found out she wasn’t above the people she looked down on. Another banger of a video!❤

All of this sounds like some dystopian horror story. The fact that it was possible for this to happen right among us and even to someone relatively privileged (i. e. not a dirt poor nobody) and in a western industrialized country with a proper legal system (even though to me as a European said system is pretty insane in and of itself) just makes it all the more scary!
Yeah, like where I live if you as example have mental health issues as example you can get support with looking after your economy and rights without taking away your freedom to make your own choices about your own life. She clearly doesn't have any intellectual disability or that insane that she has a psychosis and doesn't know what she's doing (maybe she had postpartum psychosis after pregnancy I don't know but that's usually temporary), I just don't understand how they could so easily take away the freedom even from someone like Britney, sounds really scary to me specially as someone with autism and other issues. I would be scared to live in US if I had some money, issues and creepy relatives.
Britney seems super sweet. Her ability to maintain composure while still having some self-worth is impressive. Her emotional intelligence is fantastic, and I hope she can finally feel whole away from her toxic family. Find wholeness within herself and find joy with her own kids.

That's the issue with trying to exist under patriarchy though, the problem's especially prevalent for women because we're told we should "be an example" even from infancy, so separating that is something we (as a society) don't do, and it leads to things like this. I think it would be very appropriate to mention that a lot of how she was ridiculed by the media, came from people of a generation older than her, that held her to a pure image that her management created for her, one that was both younger for her than she was and one that came clearly from purity culture, and she said she hated it. They wanted her to pretend to be a "virginal good eternal christian girl image" for conservative older audiences, when she wasnt. When she was 16 they wanted to market her with power rangers and teletubby toys for her first music video, even though she said her audience was for teenagers like herself. Purity culture really made her unable to be herself to the media and what set her up to be bullied and mocked by it, when she didn't live the way the image given to her was, even when she became an adult. The reality was that she was more relatable than what they tried to market her to be. She dated, experimented and did things that teenagers do but only chastised for it heavily because that wasn't the image that people above her wanted her to accept. I mean the Diane Sawyer interview is an example of that. Always asking if she was a virgin and shaming her for how she was growing up with her dating life. I know that there was also no way she could have came out and said she had an abortion at the time, because the same people that slut shamed her hard for just wearing a tubetop would have destroyed her. She couldn't talk to anyone if she had to, it would leak and then she would be torn apart by the media of the time. Now that she had said the management and media gave her an image she didn't actually like for how restricting it was, I hope people can stop calling her crazy.

Its not really a cultural expectation (both because of racism and because its just not something most people outside of European Christian arrogance really has). Black women were usually held more so to just be attractive models of desire in music videos or marketed as tomboys to fit in with the male dominated and aimed focus that 90s R&B/Hip Hop was. Like Aaliyah was marketed to be both innocent (her voice) but also cool and street (with the boys.) Purity culture is supposed to be this stereotype for blonde white women that was pretty much upheld to make them seem more innocent and valuable politically than brown women but a the same time they are also given a fetishized infantalization from it as well. Where for some reason that is how they are sexualized by creepy boomers, but also used to pretty much make men of color seem more dangerous to justify racism, because of the myth of "Christian white woman innocence". At the same time we see how confining that is for women who arent by nature like this. Britney was never really "pure" like that. Her hair wasnt even actually blonde, and she wasnt even a virgin during her 90s era. She said this. She also does smoke cigarettes. A lot of how much Britney was scrutinized was for her not fitting that image they wanted her to be for an older white conservative audience, when in actuality Britney seemed more like now Gen Z pop artists are now. Where it is more acceptable for female artists to do things more on their own terms. To write songs about sex on their perspective or to smoke weed. Britney was not allowed to do that, even if she likely wouldn't have been different from what is acceptable today.
Well of course the media who ridiculed her were older than her. The media back then was made up of adults who had built careers in the media, and Britney was like 20. People her age were not in media. It’s not like today where anyone of any age can enter the media all in their own by starting a TH-cam channel.

I use to be a dancer and the clothes were always skin tight, little skirts, illusion of nudeness, etc. A costume that fit the theme. If she was a ballerina or a ballroom dancer, no one would blink an eye. Not a fan of her music but I am a fan of her hard work and limitless talent. She’s amazing!
Honestly, knowing how many freedoms you lose with a conservatorship, I don't think there is ever a valid case for one. Some people may need extra help in managing affairs, but no one should ever have that much power over another person - it is in and of itself abuse. Being disabled, even when taken to the extreme, should never be grounds for the removal of bodily autonomy or other basic freedoms. Otherwise, loved the video - thank you for your work!
My mother cleans her body with literal bleach because she's schizophrenic. She doesn't recognize that it's harmful... My mother is "free" and she's also homeless. Some people can't take care of themselves.
If a person has a severe enough intellectual disability, conservatorship is the only viable option. My maternal half-brother has the intellectual maturity of a slightly below average 7 year old child. He is non-verbal on top of that. Without conservatorship, he would not be able to feed himself or pay his own bills, let alone anything else. In some rare cases, it is unavoidable.
Great compassionate Video about all the trauma she went through. I was about 12 or 13 when first of her music video showed up, all schoolgirls were crazy about her. People grew up with her, there was also Christina and others young artists, but Britney was number one. Plus from that time I remember just Britney songs and videos. I’m a physician myself and I just cant understand those doctors who participated in this abuse. Agree, she should just do what she wants, its a part of healing. People stop bashing her choices.

I was born in '91 so Britney (and the cohort of other former mickey mouse club members) were artists that I loved to listen to. Pop music vibes with my brain in a way I can't describe, and Britney's music is still imprinted upon me so strongly I can recognize it from the opening beats. My favorite album is the same as yours, Oops I did it again, but I also adored the Britney album. Watching this video made me feel a certain way because I was a part of those who would talk mad shit about Britney. Granted I was a teenager, but still the fact that I attacked this person who (in retrospect) showed signs of mental distress and was in need of help and understanding. There is a lot about that time in my life that I regret. True story: yesterday I went on my phone browser's anon mode to look up Britney when I was discussing her story with my mother, so we could see her age and shit and hopefully not have the algorithm mess the results. Guess what... The top things Google suggested were news about her body, or when she last showed up naked and shit. It's 2023, she's over 40 years old now, and it feels like nothing's changed. Poor Britney. It took her decades to find her voice, to share her side of the story, and even with all the power she could've had, she's yet another woman to suffer in the hands of patriarchy. If her heart got broken to the point it did, I get chills wondering how many are suffering in silence at this very moment. My heart goes to her and all of these people...
This topic is so good, so important. I am a bit younger than Britney, five years younger, and I'm also from south Louisiana and grew up poor in a dysfunctional family. (And I'm also pretty.) I relate to her. I have suffered SO MUCH in my life from misogyny. Like, of course, you get it from strangers. But it also permeates into your family. It makes total sense that Britney gave a ton of money to her family as soon as she first earned it. Especially in the south, it's part of the culture to be unhealthily close to your family. I'm actually dealing with a situation with my family related to that right now. On top of that expectation, she's female. So, society expects her to take care of people. It would have been WELL WITHIN HER RIGHT to never give her family a PENNY. But imagine what judgment she would have endured for that. One of the sad things though is that growing up while she became famous, I participated in the hate-Britney-Spears train. I think I resented her for escaping the poverty trap and for being happy. 'Cause I certainly wasn't. But also, it was just general misogyny that we all grow up with--"women shouldn't be sluts," etc. I am SO FUCKING PROUD of her for writing this book. The conservatorship is, of course, the worst part of her story. It's absolutely unbelievable that it's legal to treat a person that way.
I grew up in the 90s and I loved her sooo much. I was a huge fan. And I never cared about all the talk about her body or about the criticism. I just thought that she seemed so divine and she was my girlcrush. I literally never cared about the so called controversies and purity culture surrounding her.
I've never been a pop fan...but hell I was just heartbroken too see what happened to her. 😢😢😢 She had a breakdown and insisted of getting help they messed up her life even more. I remember how that impacted my decision to seek help for my depression...if Her was not able to get the help she needed how could i a nobody.
I love your take on this. People don’t understand trauma, and this played a huge factor in how everything played out. I agree with you about the importance of the documentaries (since her “Team” aka criminals were lying to the public about her being okay). I don’t expect Britney to have any idea about what was going on publicly because she was essentially imprisoned at the time, so it makes sense why she was confused about why it was so important. People didn’t believe it! Her dad was saying it was all a conspiracy and she’s fine and all that nonsense. The documentaries brought massive public attention and outrage that I believe were an integral part of her eventual freedom. I’m so glad she’s still with us, she is a true inspiration for enduring the years of abuse and injustice she was subjected to. She’s probably the strongest woman I can think of and I admire her resilience.

The way that Brit was treated during the 00's and 10's was a reflection of the way young American women were treated. Although I share nothing in common with her (I'm a fluffy Latina from the city), I can see sociocultural parallels between Britney's then demise and that of other young women in American society. We were collectively misled into believing that in a post-feminist America young women could indeed have it all and be all that. Secretly and not so secretly, people plotted our downfall to prove that there is a steep price for a woman to pay for being beautiful, successful, intelligent, sexy, over achieving, economically stable and free thinking. I too was cut down by all kinds of people who in the name of morality I had to be set straight or else. But this is where our similarities end. Britney Spears has expressed in interviews from 2010 (Access Hollywood or other TV tabloid) that Hispanic men are not the ones to bring home to Daddy (the same man who sold her out to the Industry and kept her as property for 13 years), and she is very conscious of her whiteness (previous social media communications telling haters to kiss her 🤍 behind). Sweetie, you were more of a slave than any person of color in America these days. The cognitive dissonance here is mind boggling. But hey, at least she's still white 😉. Having said that, I can still have empathy for her struggles. But the whole truth must be told, not just the one that paints the narrative of Ms. Spears as a wounded saint. Now that some of us are in our 40's this is where our paths as women truly diverge. I really, really appreciate the last part of your video talking about Britney's IG posts. The past year of people being "concerned" for her because of these posts and even saying shit like "maybe the conservatorship shouldn't have ended" have really pissed me off. Because it's like... wtf is she doing that's so "worrisome"?! She's awkwardly dancing with bad lighting and with minimal clothes... so what? GOOD FOR HER! I've never been a fan of Britney Spears. Not my type of music, (just a matter of taste, please don't hate me) BUT I have a lot of respect for her, for the professional artist that she is. She has been able to keep her fans close all these years long, like 25 years, she sold so many records, so many people went to see her concerts. God the 2000's were BRUTAL. When I heard about the book, i had to buy it, I wanted to listen to HER. The medias have always portrayed her as a lunatic Diva , silly girl. How wrong, wrong in so many ways... I hope she recovers for good. She deserves a happy, healthy life . I hope eventually she sees my comment. I'm only a few years older than Britney and I was never a huge fan of her music when she got really big. I didn't hate her, I was just in my late teens / early 20s and the boy bands and "teen" music just wasn't my thing at the time. I also don't really follow celebrity magazines, so I was pretty shocked when the stuff came out about Kevin Federline and her breakdown. However I think it's easy, looking from the outside in, to dismiss a lot of that stuff as a celebrity doing some weird things or maybe under the influence of drugs. After all, she had been a child star and many of those grew up to have issues with addiction and partying. Now, however, we know that something much darker was going on. Reading this book and hearing about her conservatorship I have a lot of respect for her. She needed help at the time, but not the kind of help that took away her independence. I'm glad that she's free now. And if she's a little whacky on TikTok, you know what? She went through so long being controlled so tightly that maybe it's normal to act a little whacky on social media. That doesn't mean that she's a danger to anyone. Let her be.
I cried so many times watching this video. I have a controlling parent and fear being forced to live with her again. I know it doesn't compare to Britney's experience, but it breaks my heart that she's been through so much hell. And yeah, if I were in her shoes, I would not have made it. Controlling people suck. The Governor of California is actively trying to relax conservatorship laws, basically to solve the "homelessness problem". It's unbelievably disturbing, and reminds me of asylums in the 19th century, rounding up the people society deems undesirable and locking them away. Imagine being homeless in California, watching this unfold, living in fear of losing what little you have left. I had to spend 72 hrs in the hospital for mental health reasons in 2021, and the way it felt to lose my freedom like that is something I cannot express in words (my hospitalization was absolutely justified, but that feeling was still there). Three days is nothing, and it felt like weeks. Imagine fourteen. years. 5,110 days of legally sanctioned abuse. No matter how much legal terminology it's dressed up in, there's only one word for that. Prison. Even if you don't like Britney, even if you despise her, she. is. human. Take away the name involved and look at her circumstances. How can you not have empathy for a woman who was subjugated, absolutely controlled, used, and violated for a decade and a half by an extremely abusive man? Literally, physically, violated - she had a birth control device manually implanted in her uterus against her will and her brain altered by a heavy metal that turns you into a zombie (unless the dosage is meticulously calibrated). What happened to her was more than mistreatment and abuse. It's a blatant example of human rights violation, and if it can happen to a world-famous, wealthy, beautiful White woman, what chance do the hundreds of thousands of people abused by our legal system every year have? As an aside, I was 13 in 2000. It was f**king horrible to watch what happened to her. In 2007, when she shaved her head, I was cheering her on (not to mention Blackout - *what* a record). It wasn't an act of "insanity". It's the same thing that many women who shed their hair do - and more importantly, why aren't mentally ill people allowed to display the same bodily autonomy as every other human being? I have schizoaffective disorder, and it's exhausting to be picked apart; to know that if I change my appearance, let alone if I'm assaulted or harmed, I'll be slammed with accusations and testimonial injustice for simply being born with atypical neurology and existing in my body.

Obviously on cd because I'm a 90s kid, but if ever there's a vinyl released I would love to replace the scratched cd I cant play anymore because I don't have a disc drive. I clapped outloud listening to the part where she said she was so moved when Oprah said "it doesn't matter" about her virginity choice and the fact she felt she had to stay innocent even though she hadn't been a virgin since 14. As a 25 year old, I grew up after her big break throught but I still grew up with Songs like Toxic. I was too young to understand what happened with her break down, i only knew that suddenly everybody hated her. My heart literally breaks for this amazing woman. After going through my own mental breakdown after putting wayyyyyy too much on my plate, I still can't even imagine how much she was going through between exes using smear campaigns against her, her children being dangled as bargaining chips when that's all she ever wanted in life, and worst of all the way the paparazzi acted as if she was even a human being all for a picture while wildly invading her privacy. How could ANYONE have gone through all that without breaking down??? And then the way they ridiculed her EVERY move. People thought they owned her, like she was their doll. Blackout is a timeless work of art, I would go off if that came on in the club. In the late 90s and early 2000s I was a little kid and also an edgelord, although I heard and liked a lot of her songs I never listened to whole albums back then and didn't have a favorite. But I've been listening to some of them since listening to the audiobook and realized that I have been missing out! Britney's whole story has been haunting me since the audiobook, I cannot imagine what it must have been like to go through all of those things. I hope she spends the rest of her life exactly the way she wants to.

This is one of the few books that took me 2 days max to finish and sure, maybe it's because it's a quick read too, but I think most of all it proves Britney's point that *HER STORY NEEDED TO BE TOLD FROM HER PERSPECTIVE* and she did it beautifully. I love your take on things & totally agree with the Marilyn Monroe parallels. I pray Marilyn's resting easy at last, and I'm so thankful Britney's still here and healing. I've never listened to a Britney Spears album, but I have some nostalgia for the Femme Fatale era. I listened to "Hold It Against Me" and "Till the World Ends" all the time in middle school. I hated "I Wanna Go" at the time, but I have respect for it now. I remember even having the hook to "Criminal" stuck in my head.
Her dance videos on Instagram are strange and unhinged to me, but they aren't hurting her or anyone else and people certainly shouldn't be wishing for more control over her. She deserves to have a good time.

One of the grossest memories I had at this time was going to my best friend's pool party with the whole neighborhood there and one of the adult neighborhood men thought it was okay to make really inappropriate comments about how my little sister--who was 13!!!--and I looked in our swimsuits. And none of the other adults who overheard blinked an eye.

Britney's story illustrates so clearly and devastatingly the misogyny, ableism and the mental health stigma in our society. It's so sickening. The 90s/early 00's misogyny was something else. I'm the same age as Britney/Christina, and it was a wild time growing up with 'role models' that people openly disparaged simply for being girls. With how people acted, you'd think a crop top was the worst thing a girl could wear. And talking about her virginity on TV... like that was just how it was back then. At my public high school they had a group come and make us all take a "save your virginity" type pledge. Yes... in PUBLIC school lmao.

I remember Jessica Simpson just ripping on other female singers saying all of the things she’d NEVER do (like show her belly although she already did) and then coming out with one of the most explicit music videos for Dukes of Hazzard. I’m no prude but what they had her do, the poses weren’t even being a bit coy, it was pure exploitation with nothing to the imagination because she couldn’t sing (sorry) so she went where the money was. Luckily she landed a brand deal where a company puts her name on clothes so that’s good for her. But she found out she wasn’t above the people she looked down on.

All of this sounds like some dystopian horror story. The fact that it was possible for this to happen right among us and even to someone relatively privileged (i. e. not a dirt poor nobody) and in a western industrialized country with a proper legal system (even though to me as a European said system is pretty insane in and of itself) just makes it all the more scary!
Yeah, like where I live if you as example have mental health issues as example you can get support with looking after your economy and rights without taking away your freedom to make your own choices about your own life. She clearly doesn't have any intellectual disability or that insane that she has a psychosis and doesn't know what she's doing (maybe she had postpartum psychosis after pregnancy I don't know but that's usually temporary), I just don't understand how they could so easily take away the freedom even from someone like Britney, sounds really scary to me specially as someone with autism and other issues. I would be scared to live in US if I had some money, issues and creepy relatives.

I think it would be very appropriate to mention that a lot of how she was ridiculed by the media, came from people of a generation older than her, that held her to a pure image that her management created for her, one that was both younger for her than she was and one that came clearly from purity culture, and she said she hated it. They wanted her to pretend to be a "virginal good eternal christian girl image" for conservative older audiences, when she wasnt. When she was 16 they wanted to market her with power rangers and teletubby toys for her first music video, even though she said her audience was for teenagers like herself. Purity culture really made her unable to be herself to the media and what set her up to be bullied and mocked by it, when she didn't live the way the image given to her was, even when she became an adult.
The reality was that she was more relatable than what they tried to market her to be. She dated, experimented and did things that teenagers do but only chastised for it heavily because that wasn't the image that people above her wanted her to accept. I mean the Diane Sawyer interview is an example of that. Always asking if she was a virgin and shaming her for how she was growing up with her dating life. I know that there was also no way she could have came out and said she had an abortion at the time, because the same people that slut shamed her hard for just wearing a tubetop would have destroyed her. She couldn't talk to anyone if she had to, it would leak and then she would be torn apart by the media of the time. Now that she had said the management and media gave her an image she didn't actually like for how restricting it was, I hope people can stop calling her crazy.

And it’s interesting how as young black girls (Destiny’s Child) they weren’t held to the same purity standard. Because white Christian American automatically sees black girls as “jezebels” and only white girls can be pure. As a black girl it was interesting to watch.
@@em.415 Part of that, is I think because there isnt a purity culture standard for Black women when they were produced by black managers. Its not really a cultural expectation (both because of racism and because its just not something most people outside of European Christian arrogance really has). Black women were usually held more so to just be attractive models of desire in music videos or marketed as tomboys to fit in with the male dominated and aimed focus that 90s R&B/Hip Hop was. Like Aaliyah was marketed to be both innocent (her voice) but also cool and street (with the boys.) Purity culture is supposed to be this stereotype for blonde white women that was pretty much upheld to make them seem more innocent and valuable politically than brown women but a the same time they are also given a fetishized infantalization from it as well. Where for some reason that is how they are sexualized by creepy boomers, but also used to pretty much make men of color seem more dangerous to justify racism, because of the myth of "Christian white woman innocence".
At the same time we see how confining that is for women who arent by nature like this. Britney was never really "pure" like that. Her hair wasnt even actually blonde, and she wasnt even a virgin during her 90s era. She said this. She also does smoke cigarettes. A lot of how much Britney was scrutinized was for her not fitting that image they wanted her to be for an older white conservative audience, when in actuality Britney seemed more like now Gen Z pop artists are now. Where it is more acceptable for female artists to do things more on their own terms. To write songs about sex on their perspective or to smoke weed. Britney was not allowed to do that, even if she likely wouldn't have been different from what is acceptable today.
Well of course the media who ridiculed her were older than her. The media back then was made up of adults who had built careers in the media, and Britney was like 20. People her age were not in media. It’s not like today where anyone of any age can enter the media all in their own by starting a TH-cam channel.

I kind of find it funny that South Park was one of the main things, and there werent many, at the time that in it's own way came out batting for her. It showed how fucked up things were. I had a lot of internalized misogyny as I became a teenager due to this messaging, so it made me distance myself from one of my favorite people, Britney, at least in public, it's really sad but now we can really see things for how they were, and I'm all for catching up on that joy at whatever stage of life we're at

Honestly, knowing how many freedoms you lose with a conservatorship, I don't think there is ever a valid case for one. Some people may need extra help in managing affairs, but no one should ever have that much power over another person - it is in and of itself abuse. Being disabled, even when taken to the extreme, should never be grounds for the removal of bodily autonomy or other basic freedoms.

My mother cleans her body with literal bleach because she's schizophrenic. She doesn't recognize that it's harmful... My mother is "free" and she's also homeless. Some people can't take care of themselves.
If a person has a severe enough intellectual disability, conservatorship is the only viable option. My maternal half-brother has the intellectual maturity of a slightly below average 7 year old child. He is non-verbal on top of that. Without conservatorship, he would not be able to feed himself or pay his own bills, let alone anything else. In some rare cases, it is unavoidable.
Great compassionate Video about all the trauma she went through. I was about 12 or 13 when first of her music video showed up, all schoolgirls were crazy about her. People grew up with her, there was also Christina and others young artists, but Britney was number one. Plus from that time I remember just Britney songs and videos.

My favorite album is the same as yours, Oops I did it again, but I also adored the Britney album.
Watching this video made me feel a certain way because I was a part of those who would talk mad shit about Britney. True story: yesterday I went on my phone browser's anon mode to look up Britney when I was discussing her story with my mother, so we could see her age and shit and hopefully not have the algorithm mess the results. Guess what... The top things Google suggested were news about her body, or when she last showed up naked and shit. It's 2023, she's over 40 years old now, and it feels like nothing's changed. Poor Britney. It took her decades to find her voice, to share her side of the story, and even with all the power she could've had, she's yet another woman to suffer in the hands of patriarchy. If her heart got broken to the point it did, I get chills wondering how many are suffering in silence at this very moment.

This topic is so good, so important. I am a bit younger than Britney, five years younger, and I'm also from south Louisiana and grew up poor in a dysfunctional family. (And I'm also pretty.) I relate to her. I have suffered SO MUCH in my life from misogyny. Like, of course, you get it from strangers. But it also permeates into your family. It makes total sense that Britney gave a ton of money to her family as soon as she first earned it. Especially in the south, it's part of the culture to be unhealthily close to your family. I'm actually dealing with a situation with my family related to that right now. On top of that expectation, she's female. So, society expects her to take care of people. It would have been WELL WITHIN HER RIGHT to never give her family a PENNY. But imagine what judgment she would have endured for that.
One of the sad things though is that growing up while she became famous, I participated in the hate-Britney-Spears train. I think I resented her for escaping the poverty trap and for being happy. 'Cause I certainly wasn't. But also, it was just general misogyny that we all grow up with--"women shouldn't be sluts," etc.
I am SO FUCKING PROUD of her for writing this book.

I agree with you about the importance of the documentaries (since her “Team” aka criminals were lying to the public about her being okay). I don’t expect Britney to have any idea about what was going on publicly because she was essentially imprisoned at the time, so it makes sense why she was confused about why it was so important. People didn’t believe it! Her dad was saying it was all a conspiracy and she’s fine and all that nonsense.
The documentaries brought massive public attention and outrage that I believe were an integral part of her eventual freedom.
I’m so glad she’s still with us, she is a true inspiration for enduring the years of abuse and injustice she was subjected to. She’s probably the strongest woman I can think of and I admire her resilience.

The way she was treated upsets me so much, so fricking unfair and disgusting.
The way that Brit was treated during the 00's and 10's was a reflection of the way young American women were treated. Although I share nothing in common with her (I'm a fluffy Latina from the city), I can see sociocultural parallels between Britney's then demise and that of other young women in American society.
We were collectively misled into believing that in a post-feminist America young women could indeed have it all and be all that. Secretly and not so secretly, people plotted our downfall to prove that there is a steep price for a woman to pay for being beautiful, successful, intelligent, sexy, over achieving, economically stable and free thinking.
I too was cut down by all kinds of people who in the name of morality I had to be set straight or else. But this is where our similarities end. Britney Spears has expressed in interviews from 2010 (Access Hollywood or other TV tabloid) that Hispanic men are not the ones to bring home to Daddy (the same man who sold her out to the Industry and kept her as property for 13 years), and she is very conscious of her whiteness (previous social media communications telling haters to kiss her 🤍 behind). Sweetie, you were more of a slave than any person of color in America these days. The cognitive dissonance here is mind boggling. But hey, at least she's still white 😉.
Having said that, I can still have empathy for her struggles. But the whole truth must be told, not just the one that paints the narrative of Ms. Spears as a wounded saint.
Now that some of us are in our 40's this is where our paths as women truly diverge. Between babies (or the lack thereof), motherhood, marriage, relationships, culture, traditions, different languages spoken and etc., this is the time to make our past experiences count and grow. Hopefully, Britney will finally be allowed to grow up as a woman and move past being forever 21.
This retelling of abuses may remain more interesting to younger generations looking for a slice of recent pop culture history as a point of reference when seeking a collective identity. Otherwise, this resurfacing is nostalgia core (spurred by the post-pandemic), with its ebb's and flows.

I'm only a few years older than Britney and I was never a huge fan of her music when she got really big. I didn't hate her, I was just in my late teens / early 20s and the boy bands and "teen" music just wasn't my thing at the time. I also don't really follow celebrity magazines, so I was pretty shocked when the stuff came out about Kevin Federline and her breakdown. However I think it's easy, looking from the outside in, to dismiss a lot of that stuff as a celebrity doing some weird things or maybe under the influence of drugs. After all, she had been a child star and many of those grew up to have issues with addiction and partying. Now, however, we know that something much darker was going on. Reading this book and hearing about her conservatorship I have a lot of respect for her. She needed help at the time, but not the kind of help that took away her independence. I'm glad that she's free now. And if she's a little whacky on TikTok, you know what? She went through so long being controlled so tightly that maybe it's normal to act a little whacky on social media. That doesn't mean that she's a danger to anyone. Let her be.
I cried so many times watching this video. I have a controlling parent and fear being forced to live with her again. I know it doesn't compare to Britney's experience, but it breaks my heart that she's been through so much hell. And yeah, if I were in her shoes, I would not have made it. Controlling people suck. The Governor of California is actively trying to relax conservatorship laws, basically to solve the "homelessness problem". It's unbelievably disturbing, and reminds me of asylums in the 19th century, rounding up the people society deems undesirable and locking them away. Imagine being homeless in California, watching this unfold, living in fear of losing what little you have left.
I had to spend 72 hrs in the hospital for mental health reasons in 2021, and the way it felt to lose my freedom like that is something I cannot express in words (my hospitalization was absolutely justified, but that feeling was still there). Three days is nothing, and it felt like weeks.

5,110 days of legally sanctioned abuse. No matter how much legal terminology it's dressed up in, there's only one word for that. Prison.
Even if you don't like Britney, even if you despise her, she. is. human.
Take away the name involved and look at her circumstances.
How can you not have empathy for a woman who was subjugated, absolutely controlled, used, and violated for a decade and a half by an extremely abusive man? Literally, physically, violated - she had a birth control device manually implanted in her uterus against her will and her brain altered by a heavy metal that turns you into a zombie (unless the dosage is meticulously calibrated).
What happened to her was more than mistreatment and abuse. It's a blatant example of human rights violation,
and if it can happen to a world-famous, wealthy, beautiful White woman, what chance do the hundreds of thousands of people abused by our legal system every year have?
As an aside, I was 13 in 2000. It was f**king horrible to watch what happened to her.
In 2007, when she shaved her head, I was cheering her on (not to mention Blackout - *what* a record).
It wasn't an act of "insanity".
It's the same thing that many women who shed their hair do - and more importantly,
why aren't mentally ill people allowed to display the same bodily autonomy as every other human being?
I have schizoaffective disorder, and it's exhausting to be picked apart; to know that if I change my appearance, let alone if I'm assaulted or harmed, I'll be slammed with accusations and testimonial injustice for simply being born with atypical neurology and existing in my body.
Her book is so shocking, sad and I feel so bad for her. I just don't get it, how her own father could be so nasty. It's really disgusting. And then all the other ppl... omg!
I'm so happy that she's finally free. I hope she can live her life as she wants without being judged. However, stupidity will always make ppl judge, right.
I think she's amazing! My favourite album has always been "Blackout" since it came out.

'Oops... I did it again' is my favourite album. It was actually my first album. Obviously on cd because I'm a 90s kid, but if ever there's a vinyl released I would love to replace the scratched cd I cant play anymore because I don't have a disc drive. I used to listen to it to help me fall asleep because I was scared of the dark. So britney was not only influencing my waking life, but also my dreams ❤

My goodness my heart breaks for her. As a kid in the 90s, I remember all the stories and news about her and how normal it was to ridicule her.

15:45 Back when Everytime was still on the charts, I could never listen to it in public because I might not be able to control my tears. It didn't help that the music video was themed around death. Knowing this now makes it hurt so much more.

I didn’t realise how bad 90s / 2000s media was. Makes sense though the constant shaming of women’s bodies while also hypersexualising them. It’s totally confusing. Let’s just let women be and perhaps not click on the daily Mail website/newspapers, so these celebrities can keep existing as humans.
It was the internet that birthed this abhorrent media of the time, and that started in the very late 90s. The first 8 years of the 90s were terrific. Then we entered the internet age and it destroyed so much. So, don’t shit on the 90s, the 90s were glorious.
I actually had to take breaks from this video because it was so heartbreaking. My heart goes out to Britney.

I clapped outloud listening to the part where she said she was so moved when Oprah said "it doesn't matter" about her virginity choice and the fact she felt she had to stay innocent even though she hadn't been a virgin since 14.
It's so ridiculous she's 40 and she was treated like a little girl for over 20 years of her life by everyone. Including her younger sister. Ughh.
Now that she's free to do whatever she wants, I do hope she's going to explore acting and roles in musicals like she wanted to.
Another thing I wonder about is how she gets treated back where she came from if she EVER goes there? I wouldn't. That poor woman is from Louisiana. And I can't think of a more backwards and misogynistic area of the US. It's basically one of the worst states this country has to offer. We see the rampant misogyny that comes from her own family and certainly her dad. That poor woman just never had a chance to be herself and be happy. I just wanna hug her. She just needs a hug so bad.
As a 25 year old, I grew up after her big break throught but I still grew up with Songs like Toxic. I was too young to understand what happened with her break down, i only knew that suddenly everybody hated her. I said once that i thought my best friend at the time looked like her and her mom got so offended and i didnt know why. Now i look back and it even makes less sense to me how the whole world could treat her like that. Celebrities had and have done and still do far more terrible things than she ever did. I'm so sorry for her
I have long maintained that paparazzi is legalized stalking and Britney's story is proof of that.
Everybody was so mean to Britney and many other women of the 2000s. I was a little kid in the 2000s, and I never understood that as a child, but I remember my family and I watching ET back in the day, and they showed clips from Britney's infamous interview where she cried. I was never a pop music fan, so I never actively listened to Britney's music, but girl, I felt so sorry for her...

Britney is no angel herself. She hurt a woman and her whole family. She was sleeping with a man that already had a family and a child on the way. Britney lied about not knowing Kevin had a child on the way since she was waiting outside of the hospital during the delivery of the child.😏😂

My heart literally breaks for this amazing woman. After going through my own mental breakdown after putting wayyyyyy too much on my plate, I still can't even imagine how much she was going through between exes using smear campaigns against her, her children being dangled as bargaining chips when that's all she ever wanted in life, and worst of all the way the paparazzi acted as if she was even a human being all for a picture while wildly invading her privacy. How could ANYONE have gone through all that without breaking down??? And then the way they ridiculed her EVERY move. People thought they owned her, like she was their doll. It is disgusting and I really hope she gets all the happiness and peace this world has to offer.i admire Britney!
Blackout is a timeless work of art, I would go off if that came on in the club. In the late 90s and early 2000s I was a little kid and also an edgelord, although I heard and liked a lot of her songs I never listened to whole albums back then and didn't have a favorite. But I've been listening to some of them since listening to the audiobook and realized that I have been missing out!
Britney's whole story has been haunting me since the audiobook, I cannot imagine what it must have been like to go through all of those things. I hope she spends the rest of her life exactly the way she wants to.

I and millions of other women have had similar horrible life experiences. Not in the public eye, of course. But this is systemic. It's global. All humans on earth need to relearn how to be kind, love each other, meet everyone's needs, and create a safe world that welcomes everyone. It IS possible AND practical.

This is one of the few books that took me 2 days max to finish and sure, maybe it's because it's a quick read too, but I think most of all it proves Britney's point that *HER STORY NEEDED TO BE TOLD FROM HER PERSPECTIVE* and she did it beautifully.

I've never listened to a Britney Spears album, but I have some nostalgia for the Femme Fatale era. I listened to "Hold It Against Me" and "Till the World Ends" all the time in middle school. I hated "I Wanna Go" at the time, but I have respect for it now. I remember even having the hook to "Criminal" stuck in my head.
Her dance videos on Instagram are strange and unhinged to me, but they aren't hurting her or anyone else and people certainly shouldn't be wishing for more control over her. She deserves to have a good time.
