The largest percentage of notes in walking bass lines in the end involve Roots and fifth. Knowing chord tones as reference can help to get familiar with the 3rd sound (and 7 that are pretty nice as resolutions. I get what you say that chord tone playing alone is not the focus of creating lines but for resolutions; it helps to know.... and scales and passing notes etc..Use these things only in the practice room and in real playing use everything at your disposal (like Jeff says) and focus on resolving.... time wont wait for you to find the right notes!
Fantastic video man! I've been telling young players to "get a good teacher" - most ask me things like "where's the best place to learn on TH-cam ". Crazy Also, I appreciate your straight to the point explanation of a walking bass line and the all important fact that "nobody owns" the walking bass style. One of the greatest joys in being a jazz bassist is what I like to think of as the puzzle aspect of walking bass - every different tune has its own changes, it's own mood, etc. e.g. - The walking bass can change the mood during solos. And the note/chord tone choices, along with the resolutions from one chord change to another are literally infinite (or at least so flexible that I don't think anyone would ever be able to exhaust the possibilities). That, to me is the puzzle part , or the freedom of walking bass lines. Thank you so very much for these short, succinct lessons ❤
Man Jeff I wish I could hang out with you I love listening to what you have to say even though I have been playing a long time I still learn from you thank you.
I know. Mine get dirtied up so quickly. I wonder the methods for keeping white socks so presentably clean? Great video too with great bass line insight.
Hi Jeff i’ve been playing bass for 40 years, but never learn to read do you think 30 minute lessons one per week would be good enough to learn to read?
Terrible sound quality, and no information conveyed except get yourself a teacher! I suppose you get what you pay for, but there's 4 minutes of my life I won't get back.
Thank you for articulating what I kinda knew (but haven't mastered). If I could only get the guys in my band to understand....
The real master. Mr. Berlin. Love your lessons but mostly your approach.

Thank you Jeff, for the lesson! Best to you from rainy Southern California.

Okay my mind is blown. Walking bass lines are not done with chord tones!? I've got to think about this... Thanks for the video!

*Jeff Berlin* Walking Basslines is based in absolutes
*Obi Wan* Only Sith deals in absolutes
*Me* I knew it we bassplayers are all Sith
What’s a music group?
I think your camera tripod is a bit wobbly... Maybe it's intentional but I find it distracting.

I bought his book "bass mastery" and in the glossary it says to "practice 15 to 30 minutes at day"

I wish I knew this 40 years ago ! Lol
Is it at least fair to say the line itself behaves in a sinusoidal manner?
P r o m o S M 🙏
The lesson which i learnt is if you put slippers on socks you wouldn't look like an idiot...
