That part is called the hibachi it is the shoulder of the blade that holds it in the scabbard.

The handle is ok, I’ve seen those hidden cane katanas that have something similar but that guard, you best pray to God, Odin, Zeus, Vishnu and Buddha if you want to keep your fingers, in a fight that guard is gonna break quickly

Yes you are right! I was thinking I should make it like a messer and have the handle construction more like a knife, but decided against it in the end.

How is the balance? Does it need a little weight on the back end?
It's weighted almost the same as a regular katana, since I extended the handle it compensates for the missing metal pieces.
