God, those were the days. Early 1970s, Schumann on the program, Kempff at the piano, Kubelik conducting the Bavarian Broadcast Orchestra, Kurt-Christian Stier as concertmaster, the Herkulessaal in Munich (an easy 30-min. drive from Kempff's home at the Starnberger See) filled with an audience that knew its stuff. All of these people shared a tradition and understood this music. Of course Kempff was the greatest artist in the hall, but the entire environment was conducive to his musicmaking. And that's how we get this unique document.

I was at a concert in Birmingham Town Hall (UK) in the early 1970's when Wilhelm Kempff played this concerto. I remember his clarity of tone in the slow central section of the first movement, his measured pace at the start of the second movement, and some brilliant playing in the finale. If I could re-live some of the days of my life I would want to experience that day again.

That dear old man! I can tell at the end he was pleased with his accomplishment -- as well he should have been. The Allegro vivace may seem a little sedate to our modern jet-propelled ears, but to me it was a great treat to hear this music played so thoughtfully, with such deliberation and with great attention to detail. When it comes to speed my advice to young contest winners would be, "Just because you CAN does not mean you SHOULD."

yeah, i can just imagine how a virtuoso like Yuja Wang would destroy this piece, all pyrotechnics and noise, zero sensitivity, phrasing, voicing, thought. K's forte is always controlled, he does not bang, though there are moments to bang, they are far less than they appear, its a cheap, drug like thrill. his readings are always thoughtful, musical, and with the tenderness of an angel longing for earth.

Kempf's phrasings and pedaling in this music, while a bit unorthodox to me, actually makes sense. Certain passages normally played legato by most pianists, he renders staccato and no pedal the effect of which gives out a sense of distinct interpretation. Quite extraordinary if I may. It's mostly evident in the cadenza.

To an obvious extent very giving and selfless in [his] interactions with the orchestral players... 3:58 ... lovey interaction, communicative, encouraging, commanding and mutually beneficial. The allegro vivace 21:52 is both inspiring and magnificent... 23:08 ... so wonderful to see a true musician displaying humility and joyful reverence in the presence of Schumann's compositional genius. One often despairs at the theatrics displayed by lesser, banal talents. Kempff 33:38 is an extraordinary human-being.

A great Schumann interpreter. And he wasn't chopped liver either in everything else. For example, his first set of the LvB piano concertos. Eternal stuff.

I have always considered him the understated maestro. When playing Schubert, it could be the composer playing to his friends. In Beethoven he has no equals, in my opinion: unless it be Claudio Arrau.

There is a small mistake. The tuning is not A mayor, but a minor, a moll.
