- Crosscountry bikes are some of the fastest bikes in the world! They allow riders to travel unbelievably fast in comparison to other types of mountain bikes. However, they can be very expensive, with some bikes costing over $10,000! So what if you could get some of that ‘free speed’ but for a fraction of the price? In this video, Rich Payne is riding the cheapest UK road-legal bike which cost only £540 against Cannondale Factory Racing’s Charlie Aldridge!

Sorta - but staying stationary on the trainer (though picturing some of my favorite riding places in my mind).
Summer here at the saphir coast in NSW - unfortunately it rained the last days and the trails may be too wet (they don't like riding on wet trails due to damage to the trails).
However beach riding with the fat bike is always possible
Always. Had an unusually warm day in the DC area so hit up Fountainhead (local trail system in Lorton VA).

I'm a fair weather cyclist. My bike is all polished and parked up now until around March-April next year after this horrible British winter season is over.
Charlie is an absolute machine! I reckon you’d have had a hard time beating him even if you’d started on the “proper” e-bike.

I reckon even my 1000w ebike build couldn't beat him, I ain't got the skill to ride this sort of terrain as well I just stay on roads.
i'd say it's just fair to have the electric power assist since these pros dope anyway

Charlie is a future XC Elite World champ......having already won Junior & U23 Titles.
Holy crap! Charlie is fast. I would love to see him and Rich both on their XC bikes on a short course to get a comparison because Rich is no slouch on an XC bike. Rich being above the limiter of the full power and with the added weight E-bike might actually be at a slight disadvantage.
Tires alone put him at a serious disadvantage. These are fun but keeping the budget closer might be more entertaining.
Rich is much better than average riders in terms skills and stamina. He rode that endurance race laat time and ended up in hospital right? I wish i can be 1/4 as good as Rich. No way to compare to Pro XC champion

Rematch? Absolutely, do with 3 riders. Keep Rich on the budget e-bike add another rider, put a weekend warrior average guy MTBer or a cameraman on the full power E-Bike vs Charlie. Maybe break it up into stages, flat, climb, descend
What an awesome video! I fell/crashed at least 20 times just watching this piece! Both riders are incredibly skilled and, as Rich noted, “survived”. Wow. Wow.

Epic race, bloody hell Charlie is fast as f**k - definitely another race on full power e-bike would be good to see who wins!

@@itsnot1673the ebike he's riding after the cheap one got a puncture already has a motor that can put out 700 watts of power when it's stressed. 250w essentially means nothing and even cheap bikes can peak at 500 and hold it easily.

That first trail is the absolute definition of me and my friends. My friends on trail bikes and me on a heavy, slow downhill bike
the 15.5mph limiter really holds ebikes back. I find they hit a wall and it makes it more difficult to clear jumps ect. Its can be done but makes it hard.
Additionally the crank is typically internally geared on mid drives, so you don't just get no support any more but you pedal through a gearbox with some losses compared to a normal crank. These mid drives are not made to be pedaled without the motor support
In a country where there's no limiter, a proper eBike handily wins by making up so much time on the straights and climbs.
It really puts it into perspective how much of an advantag eBikes are and their potential pitfalls.
That's why I fitted a 1000w kit from eBay :). £200 for the kit and £400 for the battery and I've now got a 30mph bike. I tried riding it with the restriction wire plugged in on the controller and it's awful.

Beast mode for sure! I used to race XC marathon and now after almost 1000miles on my Trance E+ I wish such a thing had existed back then for training. Getting to ride sections of trails repeatedly at speeds to test lines and scout trails would have been a huge benefit! I still ride my other bikes and faster on those because of the eMTB.
This is the unique aspect of eBike. With a full Enduro bike like the Strive:on you can be as fast as the world champion on a 12k XC bike without scarfing your entire life to MTB training.
I think Rich puts in a fair amount of training, and is a proper quick rider, and he could only just keep up with Charlie, the average rider on an e-bike might hold with a pro for a few minutes before they were burnt out.

That cheap Ebike may seem cheap at first but once you factor in the hundreds of thousands of dollars that your house costs to replace once it has burnt down it is actually not good value.

You could try and compare that to a DIY one with a CYC Photon (no throttle = also UK legal)
You get to use your gears with a hub motor which will be loads better on climbs and offroad

Those cheap Amazon bikes are only called eMTBs in name to be honest. They don't really work off-road. They are more suitable for tarmac riding where the worst surface you will encounter are portholes and manhole covers. Anything more gnarly than that and the bike will just disintegrate under you. Just to see how different the performance level is, in the next video, we need to see :
1. A high-end lightweight eMTB vs high-end XC (with pros on both bikes)
2. A high-end full power eMTB vs high-end XC (with pros on both bikes)
How fast is this guy to beat a e bike mad props to this guy.

This was cute, but it would be more interesting to test whether a hardtail emtb is viable on blue/red trails in the first place (assuming reasonable fork, brakes, and tires). See if rear hub vs. mid-drive makes any difference. Next question is whether full suspension with rear hub retrofit is viable. No one on YT has delved into these questions. Given the crazy high prices of proper full-suspension emtb's, people are looking for alternatives. (FWIW, used emtb prices are also lofty and most listings never sell, because owners can't face the staggering depreciation.)

I can remember when we had three chainrings in the front and the largest was usually over 40 teeth
You still get such 3 x cranks, the typical ones for mtbs are 22/32/44, while you also get some with 42 or 40.
Personally I ride a 2x on my XC with 22/36, with a 11/36 cassette that's still sufficient for 50 kph

You snuck that upon him, with the mid race bike change to be fair. I reckon if you actually set out from the start, XC pro racer vs Ebike, he would still smoke you. It's the prep, the warmup, the racers mentality etc.

Great way to push Charlie to his max effort. So Rich, to be fair to budget, just how much did your actual eBike cost? A hell-of-lot more than that Amazon toy bike.
Probably around 5k usd or more I'd guess.
So more of a $5K to $10K comparison in bike cost, which makes more sense. I think once you hit the $5-6K cost the gains after that become more marginal for the average rider. Does GCN agree?@@MethodOverRide
@billmccaffrey1977 I think so based on my shopping. I was looking at a Trek Rail and it was about 4600. Entry level Fuel Exe is about 5300 or so. You can go up in the models to get better components, but the average rider and weekend warrior probably doesn't need them.
As an aside, I suspect this would end differently with a US spec ebike with the limit set to 20 mph. Bosch and Shimano mid drive systems are known to have a lot of drag once you hit the limiter. I think if either ebike could do 20 mph it would have been much closer, or Charlie may have lost.
Oh way more, it’s a Canyon Strive On and I think there around £6600

I think this would have been better as a Rich racing Rich. Less staged, more real information. Wattage, speed on the climbs, speed downhill, how far off are they really. I think that would have been really entertaining and also real.

Against a cheap E-Bike the Pro always wins, with a road legal Hi-End E-Bike the winner would be the one who chooses the track, an illegal Hi-End E-Bike beats the Pro - as long as the rider has at least enough driving skills to not die on the descends.

The guy is an utter weapon uphill and down! I think you'd need a full power bike with a derestrictor to beat him! Lol. Either that or stage the race somewhere with some disgusting steep climbs that keep the speed below the limiter! Lol

@@eartharrow6772they also offer a 27,5er version for 100€ more in EU. I don't know if the 26er frame would take a 27,5er wheel, the fork surely does not (but of course the fork will also be a very cheap one)

You would definitely still lose even on a light weight Ebike
One more proof that those cheap ebikes are not good. Next challenge get a proper full power ebike and give some head start to see if you can catch up
To be fair that Myatu costs 780€ in EU, so it's cheaper than a non electric entry level XC bike. The same brand also sells non electric mountainbikes for 280€, you can surely imagine how "good" they will be

rich, probably stop being so stuck up, when that bike costs probably as much as 1 wheel from that overpriced xc bike. most people looking at bikes like that are for commuting to work. seriously mate your experiments are a waste of time and money. why not do an experiment like would you rather spend 10,000 on an ebike or under 600 on an ebike to get to work and back. you're missing the point of budget ebikes mate!
