Mr Bojangles was HIS song. I've adored Sammy my whole life. One of a kind , never to be seen again. The ultimate entertainer. Theyjust don't make them like this anymore. The sheer breadth and depth of his talent has never been repeated. Probably never will. He had just SO many strings to his bow. When he sang a song he LIVED it. Owned it.

If they ever found someone who could play sammy in a biopic film. The title of that film has to be
      Mr Bojangles

Sammy Davis Jr. was one of THE MOST MULTI-TALENTED performers that ever lived. (The ONLY other contemporary in his league, in my opinion, was MICKEY ROONEY). Sammy did it ALL.... Sing, Dance, Act, Play Instruments, Did Impressions, Did Gun Tricks, etc; and with eventually the aid of ONLY one eye - due to a car crash.

If you've ever seen the movie THE LITTLE COLONEL with Shirley Temple dancing with an Old, Black man up & down some stairs.... THAT was "Mr. Bojangles" himself. 😀

True, that is Bill ' Bojangles' Robinson. But the gent that Sammy was sing about was completely fictional the was written by Jerry Jeff Walker( based on African American Street dancers from the French Quarter New Orleans and not Mr, Robinson. The Nitty Gitty Dirt Band also has a release of this song.

Sammy Davis Jr. helped pave the way for MANY African-American performers; and that in part had ALOT to do with Frank Sinatra.

Even Fred Astaire said that Bill "Bojangles" Robinson was the Greatest Tap Dancer.

Funny story for me: there was a street performer in the West Village NYC a sweet and happy black man named Mr.Bojangles. He did the actual original dance styles of 1930s and 40s and fifties. Soft Shoe Tap. He had a dog by his side watching the hat for tips. Years later i saw him in San Francisco downtown doing the routine. To my joy he saw me and called out "Horatio Street" The street he hung out on. Sammy is one of the greatest ever!

The song was written by the late great Jerry Jeff Walker.

It was kool seeing someone ALLOW themselves to experience a performance and accept it as art - without the typical “it was better/worse than so&so…”

The person he's referring to in the song is the famous Tap Dancer Bill "Bojangles" Robinson. Considered to be the "The Greatest" Tap Dancer of all time & the Father of Tap. 🙂

Sammy was raised doing vaudeville with his parents. Explains a lot, huh?
