2 yrs later, after you posted this video, I find it on you tube or, I should say it shows up. You are the first person I've seen doing teaching on drawing portraits that has took the time to talk about how to get facial proportions right, or very close, for an accurate drawing! Thank you! I've saved your video for future reference. I don't do much drawing since it's just a pasttime for me and a source of unwinding. Also, I don't recall any books discussing what you've covered ( I'm pretty much self taught thru art teaching books ). By the way, you happen to be a very beautiful young lady. Thank you again for the video. This old man has learned something no one else has brought up. But I did know about using pencil for measuring...just never put the full ' picture ' together.

I just started drawing, and very soon I became "pretty good", as some of my friends saw examples; but for love of God I couldn't draw faces, portraits, (nose ,eyes ears ,lips just wasn't able to get it right); I wanted to figure out and do it without help, watching videos or asking anyone/which ended with full bucket of unsuccessful projects. I even became mad; asking my self how can I draw everything else except portraits of faces, until I finally decided to check it out and your clip came first. I CANT THANK YOU ENOUGH . I did visit your web site and sent you email if you are taking any online tutorials. I'd be honored to take few and pay fair price. I AM WISHING YOU HEALTHINESS, HAPPINESS AND AS WELL TO ALL YOUR LOVED ONES. I AM WISHING THE SAME TO ALL PEOPLE THAT ARE SUBED AND TRUOUTH THE WHOLE WORLD.

Thank you so much for posting this. My daughter was very frustrated after missing the proportions instruction in her art class. Your tutorial was perfect and exactly as I remembered it years ago when I learned portraiture. No surprise you are an Art teacher/professor! Well done.

thank you so much. this is the only technique that’s actually made sense to me! i’ve been drawing for years but usually skip out on the “rules” of drawing a face cause it was confusing but this really helped me.

I've followed your lessons for a while and did the old and the new facial proportions this afternoon; wonderful, a huge help. For such confidence as an art teacher, you should be more confident in your looks! I'll be digging in on all your lessons, hoping that practice makes progress.

Thats a great portrait you did of yourself A true beauty! Great explanation of all the relational proportions. Now I need to memorize these. I wrote them down, at least most of them. Is it much different when using photo references? In that case should you start with an egg shape?

Thank you for your awesome videos! I am so thankful and I frequently use them to teach alongside my own students. There is one thing on this video, however, that I wanted to double-check. You state that the shoulders are measured by headlengths. My understanding has always been that that proportion is measured by headwidths- not lengths. I just did some internet researching and find other artists using head width- not length for that proportion... I know all people are slightly different shapes, but as a general rule do you always teach head length for that measurement? In one place I found that for women, use head width, for men, use head length.... so confusing!
