Such a simple, yet clever idea that makes a whole lot of sense. If you don't plan on staying in the room for a long time and just want a base, this is perfect.
@@benghazi4216 Those hotels are plentiful in Japan. Look for 3 star tourist hotels like APA or Dormy Inn. Most are very clean, cheap, and you can get single bed rooms with an ensuite. The 3 star means that they usually lack restaurants etc, but they tend to be near train stations with hundreds of food places nearby.
@@benghazi4216 For purpose built hotels it is generally pretty good room to room. The newer the build the better. The larger hotels may have a lot of corridor traffic and door noise when busy though. The cheaper rooms will have views of a concrete wall next door but you won’t get street noise. This option is more than a capsule, but still cheap for inner city hotels anywhere in the world. There are also 2 star hotels intended for businesspeople that are a bit cheaper and more spartan. You roll the dice whether rooms will be smoky in business hotels though, especially in smaller cities.
I have often thought that a capsule hotel would be good for airports, for when there are a lot of people stranded due to weather or some other delay that affects many passengers, or even just for people that have a long layover.

I am VERY impressed! I am in the UK. I am very traditional......and old! Brown furniture and dusty stuff everywhere......but I can’t help loving this clean efficient functional place to sleep in! It’s lovely! Bravo Japan for such clever ways of accommodating the weary traveller!

And it's difficult to not feel worthless on such days because the world doesn't just stop with its responsibilities because you have no energy and it's painful just to stand up.

Again, I dont know your situation so I apologize if this is out of the question, but perhaps a foam roller or some yoga videos might help. Also, vitamins!! Thank you for the very nice and uncluttered video. That capsule hotel looks very doable for a single traveler or others that are willing to split into separate spaces for the evening. I think still way too tiny and confining for two, or even one and a pet of any kind. This hotel's cleanliness, privacy, security, amenities, and aesthetics are appealing. The room is beautiful and highly functional. The window is like a breath of fresh air. This is vastly superior to the coffin/morgue-like tubes of capsule hotels I've seen.
@@Mrkti Yes, it would be interesting and helpful to see how big those rooms are. Remember, when the bed in the single capsule was unfolded for sleep, it basically took up the space. Imagine 2 people in a space barely big enough for both of them to move around in. Even for sleeping, to be shut in such a confined space with someone else would be a challenge for most people that are unaccustomed to such tiny spaces.
I clicked on this video to look at the capsule hotel but I left feeling very nostalgic. I stayed in Kyoto for 6 years before I moved to the Tohoku region a few months ago. That sidewalk along Karasuma Gojo with the McDonald's, Yayoiken and Yoshinoya (and Coco Ichiban Curry is also there too!) brought back tons of memories as I spent quite a huge chunk of my life in Kyoto walking around that area. I chuckled when you got lost trying to find Yasaka Pagoda. I totally could relate as I am a photographer and that area around Ninenzaka and Sannenzaka were my favourite place to go for taking photos. Thank you so much for sharing this video. I might just stay in that capsule hotel after all just for that nostalgic feels (:
I love how relaxing your videos are. I especially love the plain and simplicity of them with no talking. It's like an ASMR and found myself falling asleep to them which is nice since I have trouble sleeping as it is. My main complaint - and I mean this as a compliment- there aren't as many videos like I prefer.
It checks all the needs for a traveller actually. Hotel is the place to sleep, you have a bed in your room, modern showers and toilets, a cool lounge, purified water. All of it for just 18 bucks a night? Wow. 5 stars from me. (Probably not for claustrophobics though)
@@erroristmusic gay men will sometimes stay in a bathhouse in the city due to a flight layover, or getting off the amtrak or greyhound for the night and need a quick place to stay thats cheap. There are some with indoor pools, sauna, steam room,etc for 20 dollars with a room its a bargain
I must have paid triple of that for a room in Paris. The door in our room did not lock and the manager looked us in the eye and said “what do you want me to do about it?”. This capsule Hotel however is exactly what you need and is kept in pristine condition. Brilliant stuff
Had a similar experience when I stayed in Paris as a teenager, and on top of that, my bed literally broke; I sat on the edge of it to put on my socks and the leg broke! I only weighed ~140 pounds, it was just a crappy bed.
Super practical. I have anxiety and somehow being in very enclosed spaces provides much comfort and relaxation. I can definitely see myself staying here.
I love how CLEAN everything looks, vs how "clean" things can be here in the USA. You can see "sterile and spotless" a mile away. I end up on Amtrak a lot, and I despise them. Imagine paying 18 USD a night for this. I'd be in heaven. It's not for living "forever", but certainly acceptable.

Just want to point out here… this is cheaper than a small studio apartment in the city I live in. And you get free cleaning, free electricity, free maintenance, access to food, and you’re 15mins walk from the train station!?!

I stayed at this capsule hotel in Dec’19 but in the shijo karasuma one (also in kyoto) and I cannot recommend it enough. Stayed 6 nights here and decided to do small day trips to Osaka instead of booking accom there separately because it was such a good deal. This video sums it up nicely but you’ll be more impressed in person, I guarantee! The only thing I’m bummed about is that now 6.2m more people know about this hidden gem🤣🤣 fingers crossed there’s bookings for my next trip hahah

@@meinakay It's not a myth. I was there a couple of years ago. People left their bikes outside the train station and not a single one was locked. I have never seen anything like it before. There are some thefts, but usually tourists. Some cultures are actually better at certain things. Japan is a homogeneous country. Something like 98% of the population are native Japanese. It is an ancient culture with very little dilution, unlike the US. That being said, it comes at a cost. They follow the rules, but they aren't exactly dancing in the streets with joy. Depression and social isolation are serious concerns.
Hostel beds not only have no locks, but they are even fully open. Millions live in hostels. So unlocked capsule is even more private/safe than a hostel.
@@LegendLength the point is that there are cameras. Which can monitor what's going on. If someone plans to harm you, there is no difference doing that in a hotel because " there are no locks " or in a middle of the street in the plain day.

I can so relate to chasing that sunset: sometimes the excitement of the run makes for an even more memorable experience than actually getting to where you were trying to get to. It’s so interesting that restaurants in Japan will serve raw eggs. In the country I live in, restaurants would never do that, presumably due to food prep laws or the risk of litigation from salmonella risk. But I hear that Japan cleans their eggs extremely well and that’s why that’s not much of an issue over there.
From what I understand (and I could be wrong, as I am a lot when it comes to food), it's not that they clean their eggs well. It's more that the way they raise and farm their chickens results in eggs that have much less risk of salmonella from being consumed raw. If you raise your own chickens in a nice environment (and don't do it like the factory farms), then you should be able to eat their eggs raw too.

With $18 in NY, you live with rats and cockroaches. This place is outrageously clean and new. I am impressed despite a bit of claustrophobia by just watching this video.
It’s so nice and simple and has all the essential at a great price. I love these type of hotel or hostel in Japan. They were always nice choice. I stayed at a hostel called Lower East Nine 4 years ago it had a cafe and a bar too. I think I might give this place a try when I can visit Kyoto again one day.
My husband and I stayed at the Pocket Hotel near Nishiki Market when we went to Kyoto and it was nice! We did a split stay between it and a business hotel near Kyoto Station. I made the business hotel the second stop because I figured it would be harder for us to switch from a large room to a small one, but my husband actually liked the Pocket Hotel better because it was such a good value. I would recommend it to any couples or solo travelers who don't need a ton of space. There's more than enough to do in Japan, so hanging out in your room while awake just doesn't make a lot of sense anyway.
@@mortuus4601 I wasn't. I had been to Japan once before and knew the country is safe and (relatively) easy to travel in as an English speaker. You just need to rent a SIM card or pocket WiFi so you can navigate with your smartphone.
It’s so amazing how affordable travel and meals can be in Japan! Breakfast for $4! That’s absolutely amazing! In the states you are hard pressed to find meals under $20 per person. Plus, it’s not a walkable place for the most part. Transportation infrastructure here is poor as well. I’ve always wanted to travel to Japan and the more I watch videos like this the more I just want to live there. Thanks for taking us on your journeys!
I actually started to feel a little claustrophobic just watching the video. A fascinating look at travel options, super clean rooms. If I was a younger (or skinnier-if I’m being honest haha) traveler, what a great idea…Compared to hostels in Europe where most of the time it’s like a dorm room with bunk beds.

This is a generous capsule. I slept in a capsule that I could not stand up. Every entry and exit of the bed required crawling to a ladder. Not recommended for claustrophobes! Even in "my" capsule everything shone from cleanliness and there were lots of digital gudgets. I Remember well an adjustable fixture that was hung above the bed in which a book is placed and a timer for setting a page . Japan is one of the fascinating countries for Western tourists.
I love the concept (a mini room sounds so cozy), but the public bathroom and shower is a little unnerving despite how clean it is. Sometimes privacy in the bathroom is so necessary for a relaxing vacation because you never know what could happen.
This should be the type of place that they build for homeless people in the United States. This is the coolest concept I have ever seen Japanese people are so smart. I absolutely love love love this❤️❤️❤️
@@tickyul It depends. Veterans and/or people who had some bad luck (lost job, just divorced, etc) could be the focus group for this kind of place. Those who can't take care of themselves because of mental health and/or have substance abuse issues need more than a room. They need full-time hospitals with a knowledgeable staff

For almost 30 years I've only been working to be able to afford to travel and of course I've already been to Japan. Even in normal hotels, the rooms are extremely small but always spotlessly clean. This small space would be enough for me when traveling, but I would like to have my own bathroom and toilet in the room.
I dont know where you are from but hotel/food/public transport in Japan is a lot cheaper than it is in Europe especially the Netherlands. Cheaper public transport is a bit slower and you can have good meals for $5. It is not as expensive as it used to be in the 80-90 ties and you dont need to go on vacation as a backpacker or student either because that is even half that price, including an avarage hotel I spend max $100 a day but if I wanted I could do $60-70.
I stayed at a "Japanese Hotel" room in Qingdao, China,...small but with toilet and shower parallel to the bed. The price was right and it was spotlessly clean.
Kyoto was a great tourist place when I went there with my kids. It was the one place where I took a paid tour, because that’s the only way to see the places where the emperor used to live. It was great to wander around the older streets. The food was great, including the tofu specialty restaurant. I’m probably too old to sleep well on that thin pad, but it certainly is cheap. It’s probably because there’s very little tourism or business travel, right?
It really depends of the person but I found the mattress to be pretty comfortable For the pricing, I would believe there will be a price hike after entering post pandemic travels.
Kyoto is very expensive if we want to stay in a decent one, but there are many foreign travelers or students who cannot afford 200 dollars. but i recommend to spend at least 150 dollars for a night.
This is fantastic and exactly what I need for my trip to Japan. The only thing I’m slightly uncomfortable with is that there’s no restroom inside the room. And I’m guessing the sound isolation isn’t the best. But it’s cheap, clean and you can get food! I’ve never seen anything like this is all my travels.
well, I mean you share restrooms literally anywhere else. Not sure why it'd be a huge issue. The sound might be an issue, but won't really know till you stay there
You can get basic but functional hotel rooms with ensuites. You jump from low tens per night to $50 and up depending on season. Rooms are small but functional. Capsules are OK if you are doing a night here and there but real hotels are pretty good value in Japan.
You know, this is a type of special hotel called Capsule hotel. You can’t expect more than a capsule worth of space to sleep and wake-up in as it is the type of temporary and emergency space just sleep in. It’s supposed to be better than sleeping in a park after missing all the trains after midnight. The Capsule hotel in Japan is typically as the name implies, a capsule-like space which is just enough for you to sleep in, a twin-size/single bed worth of space. Nothing more. And it’s not a regular hotel in Japan.
They are amazing. Look up k hostels in Japan. Great chain of lovely places like this. Specially Ito. I did one month in Japan in place like this. All for 25 dollars a night in very prime areas. The bathrooms are immaculate

Wonderful how clean everything is. For triple that price, I get a dirtier hotel room in my country lol. But I probably won't stay here because I can't endure having to share toilets and shower rooms with others. But man that holy water sounds great xD Oh and I know it is up to the individual but next time you can try adding the egg to the rice, I'm sure it will taste great as well :)
I stayed at the Shijokarasuma Pocket Hotel location back in 2019. Definitely worth it. Especially since it was down the block from Nishiki Market and across the street from the kinako cafe, Kissho Karyo.
I stayed at a capsule in in Tokyo that was basically a box about 8 feet long, 4 feet wide and 4 feet tall. It was like a dog kennel, but it was just a place to sleep. I wouldn't stay long term. It is nice to have low price options so you can travel and see the world and not break the bank doing it.

@@Mrkti Yes, it would be interesting and helpful to see how big those rooms are. Remember, when the bed in the single capsule was unfolded for sleep, it basically took up the space. Imagine 2 people in a space barely big enough for both of them to move around in. Even for sleeping, to be shut in such a confined space with someone else would be a challenge for most people that are unaccustomed to such tiny spaces.

I clicked on this video to look at the capsule hotel but I left feeling very nostalgic. I stayed in Kyoto for 6 years before I moved to the Tohoku region a few months ago. That sidewalk along Karasuma Gojo with the McDonald's, Yayoiken and Yoshinoya (and Coco Ichiban Curry is also there too!) brought back tons of memories as I spent quite a huge chunk of my life in Kyoto walking around that area. I chuckled when you got lost trying to find Yasaka Pagoda. I totally could relate as I am a photographer and that area around Ninenzaka and Sannenzaka were my favourite place to go for taking photos. Thank you so much for sharing this video. I might just stay in that capsule hotel after all just for that nostalgic feels (:

I love how relaxing your videos are. I especially love the plain and simplicity of them with no talking. It's like an ASMR and found myself falling asleep to them which is nice since I have trouble sleeping as it is. My main complaint - and I mean this as a compliment- there aren't as many videos like I prefer.
It checks all the needs for a traveller actually. Hotel is the place to sleep, you have a bed in your room, modern showers and toilets, a cool lounge, purified water. All of it for just 18 bucks a night? Wow. 5 stars from me. (Probably not for claustrophobics though)

I must have paid triple of that for a room in Paris. The door in our room did not lock and the manager looked us in the eye and said “what do you want me to do about it?”. This capsule Hotel however is exactly what you need and is kept in pristine condition. Brilliant stuff

Had a similar experience when I stayed in Paris as a teenager, and on top of that, my bed literally broke; I sat on the edge of it to put on my socks and the leg broke! I only weighed ~140 pounds, it was just a crappy bed.

I love how CLEAN everything looks, vs how "clean" things can be here in the USA. You can see "sterile and spotless" a mile away. I end up on Amtrak a lot, and I despise them. Imagine paying 18 USD a night for this. I'd be in heaven. It's not for living "forever", but certainly acceptable.

I stayed at this capsule hotel in Dec’19 but in the shijo karasuma one (also in kyoto) and I cannot recommend it enough. Stayed 6 nights here and decided to do small day trips to Osaka instead of booking accom there separately because it was such a good deal. This video sums it up nicely but you’ll be more impressed in person, I guarantee! The only thing I’m bummed about is that now 6.2m more people know about this hidden gem🤣🤣 fingers crossed there’s bookings for my next trip hahah

There's NO THEFT in Japan. It's not part of Japanese culture so wy would you fear something wrong? You just don't need a lock. If you start with the fear it will pop up... be fearless.

@@meinakay It's not a myth. I was there a couple of years ago. People left their bikes outside the train station and not a single one was locked. I have never seen anything like it before. There are some thefts, but usually tourists. Some cultures are actually better at certain things. Japan is a homogeneous country. Something like 98% of the population are native Japanese. It is an ancient culture with very little dilution, unlike the US. That being said, it comes at a cost. They follow the rules, but they aren't exactly dancing in the streets with joy. Depression and social isolation are serious concerns.
Hostel beds not only have no locks, but they are even fully open. Millions live in hostels. So unlocked capsule is even more private/safe than a hostel.

If someone plans to harm you, there is no difference doing that in a hotel because " there are no locks " or in a middle of the street in the plain day.

I can so relate to chasing that sunset: sometimes the excitement of the run makes for an even more memorable experience than actually getting to where you were trying to get to. It’s so interesting that restaurants in Japan will serve raw eggs. In the country I live in, restaurants would never do that, presumably due to food prep laws or the risk of litigation from salmonella risk. But I hear that Japan cleans their eggs extremely well and that’s why that’s not much of an issue over there.
They also boil the eggs ever so slightly to kill whatever’s clasping onto the eggs. It’s so cool really.
From what I understand (and I could be wrong, as I am a lot when it comes to food), it's not that they clean their eggs well. It's more that the way they raise and farm their chickens results in eggs that have much less risk of salmonella from being consumed raw. If you raise your own chickens in a nice environment (and don't do it like the factory farms), then you should be able to eat their eggs raw too.

I've been driving past this hotel a few times and always wondered how it looked inside. Cool to finally see.
It’s so nice and simple and has all the essential at a great price. I love these type of hotel or hostel in Japan. They were always nice choice. I stayed at a hostel called Lower East Nine 4 years ago it had a cafe and a bar too. I think I might give this place a try when I can visit Kyoto again one day.

My husband and I stayed at the Pocket Hotel near Nishiki Market when we went to Kyoto and it was nice! We did a split stay between it and a business hotel near Kyoto Station. I made the business hotel the second stop because I figured it would be harder for us to switch from a large room to a small one, but my husband actually liked the Pocket Hotel better because it was such a good value. I would recommend it to any couples or solo travelers who don't need a ton of space. There's more than enough to do in Japan, so hanging out in your room while awake just doesn't make a lot of sense anyway.

@@mortuus4601 I wasn't. I had been to Japan once before and knew the country is safe and (relatively) easy to travel in as an English speaker. You just need to rent a SIM card or pocket WiFi so you can navigate with your smartphone.
I like to watch travel videos like this and the thing I’ve noticed about Japan is everything is so clean, everywhere, all the time.

It’s so amazing how affordable travel and meals can be in Japan! Breakfast for $4! That’s absolutely amazing! In the states you are hard pressed to find meals under $20 per person. Plus, it’s not a walkable place for the most part. Transportation infrastructure here is poor as well. I’ve always wanted to travel to Japan and the more I watch videos like this the more I just want to live there. Thanks for taking us on your journeys!

This is a generous capsule. I slept in a capsule that I could not stand up. Every entry and exit of the bed required crawling to a ladder.
Not recommended for claustrophobes! Even in "my" capsule everything shone from cleanliness and there were lots of digital gudgets. I Remember well an adjustable fixture that was hung above the bed in which a book is placed and a timer for setting a page .
Japan is one of the fascinating countries for Western tourists.
jeah this is not a classic capsule hotel. The name stated ... "pocket"... hotel. But for round about 15€ this is quite an option.
I love the concept (a mini room sounds so cozy), but the public bathroom and shower is a little unnerving despite how clean it is. Sometimes privacy in the bathroom is so necessary for a relaxing vacation because you never know what could happen.

For almost 30 years I've only been working to be able to afford to travel and of course I've already been to Japan. Even in normal hotels, the rooms are extremely small but always spotlessly clean. This small space would be enough for me when traveling, but I would like to have my own bathroom and toilet in the room.

I dont know where you are from but hotel/food/public transport in Japan is a lot cheaper than it is in Europe especially the Netherlands. Cheaper public transport is a bit slower and you can have good meals for $5. It is not as expensive as it used to be in the 80-90 ties and you dont need to go on vacation as a backpacker or student either because that is even half that price, including an avarage hotel I spend max $100 a day but if I wanted I could do $60-70.

I stayed at a "Japanese Hotel" room in Qingdao, China,...small but with toilet and shower parallel to the bed. The price was right and it was spotlessly clean.

Kyoto was a great tourist place when I went there with my kids. It was the one place where I took a paid tour, because that’s the only way to see the places where the emperor used to live. It was great to wander around the older streets. The food was great, including the tofu specialty restaurant. I’m probably too old to sleep well on that thin pad, but it certainly is cheap. It’s probably because there’s very little tourism or business travel, right?
It really depends of the person but I found the mattress to be pretty comfortable
For the pricing, I would believe there will be a price hike after entering post pandemic travels.
Kyoto is very expensive if we want to stay in a decent one, but there are many foreign travelers or students who cannot afford 200 dollars. but i recommend to spend at least 150 dollars for a night.

This is fantastic and exactly what I need for my trip to Japan. The only thing I’m slightly uncomfortable with is that there’s no restroom inside the room. And I’m guessing the sound isolation isn’t the best. But it’s cheap, clean and you can get food! I’ve never seen anything like this is all my travels.

You can get basic but functional hotel rooms with ensuites. You jump from low tens per night to $50 and up depending on season. Rooms are small but functional. Capsules are OK if you are doing a night here and there but real hotels are pretty good value in Japan.
You know, this is a type of special hotel called Capsule hotel. You can’t expect more than a capsule worth of space to sleep and wake-up in as it is the type of temporary and emergency space just sleep in. It’s supposed to be better than sleeping in a park after missing all the trains after midnight. The Capsule hotel in Japan is typically as the name implies, a capsule-like space which is just enough for you to sleep in, a twin-size/single bed worth of space. Nothing more. And it’s not a regular hotel in Japan.
They are amazing. Look up k hostels in Japan. Great chain of lovely places like this. Specially Ito. I did one month in Japan in place like this. All for 25 dollars a night in very prime areas. The bathrooms are immaculate

I stayed at the Shijokarasuma Pocket Hotel location back in 2019. Definitely worth it. Especially since it was down the block from Nishiki Market and across the street from the kinako cafe, Kissho Karyo.

I stayed at a capsule in in Tokyo that was basically a box about 8 feet long, 4 feet wide and 4 feet tall. It was like a dog kennel, but it was just a place to sleep. I wouldn't stay long term. It is nice to have low price options so you can travel and see the world and not break the bank doing it.
I'm quite shocked because 18$ for such a great quality room, albeit it being small, is amazing. The facilities are so clean and has such a calming colour palette
