As hack hobbyist I have been watching this channel to learn some basics and for its entertainment value (almost every video is good for a laugh or two). But have to say, you guys have also given me a new found respect for the profession of welding, a combination of technical expertise and craftsmanship. Well done and kudos to all the true welding professionals out there!
yessir. as i always tell the kids who think they are hot shots out of highschool just because you can make a pretty weld doesnt mean its a good weld. the amount of time it takes to become even novice is several thousand hours under the hood
I'm a third year local 40 ironworker (nyc) third year apprentice learning welding and this channel has been the best for me to learn welding. Thank you for doing what you do!
As a welded structures design engineer who defines the usage of AWS D14.4 and D1.1 on the drawings, these types of videos give me a massive appreciation for the guys actually putting the structures together. The skill/workmanship that is required and verified with tests like this excite me to want to define welds that will result in high quality welds leading to long lasting structures. Kind of makes me want to try the qualification test myself as a non-welder and see how bad thing turn out. haha🤣
Excellent tutorial even for us old heads lol. I will never forget my 1st bend test in the ol "heartbreaker" 1993 wow where does time go! Thanks for sharing, God bless!
Yeah, don’t quench! 😂 I made that mistake once. I picked up my strip after leaving it to cool but it was still super hot. Out of reaction I chucked it in the nearest tub of water. I went to bend my two pieces, neither of which had visible porosity, but the one that was accidentally quenched split right in half! Good thing it was just for practice. 🤦🏻♂️
So interesting how every metal needs its own procedures. I'm a jeweler and we often get fits with white gold cracking so while visiting a metallurgist friend that does high production castings he told me, "quench white gold right away and it won't crack" Guess what he was right !
Little late but maybe it'll help somebody.. if you happen to accidentally or mistakenly quench your plate or coupons, you can reheat them with a torch then allow them to cool naturally and they will be good to go again! I've dropped a plate in a tank by accident while setting up to cut it with a torch, just get the weld zone cherried again and it will be fine.
I always find myself watching these and thinking "That's honestly no more difficult than welds I've done out in the field." Yet I still get over the "test jitters" that come before a test. I've been welding for 4 years and still can't seem to walk my happy butt into the test.
The weld shop has been closed most of this year so studying this channel during quarantine literally prepped me for my test , I am testing next week💪🏼 433
Fantastic, I was just googling how to prep a plate with backing for a bend today. Now I don’t have a press or anything I was planning on just strapping it into a vice and using a pipe to bend it. Maybe too crude, but again this is just what I have access to. Thanks, happy Memorial Day
A great way to remove a backer is this, Cut your strips, Use a zip disk to notch into the MIDDLE of the backer and go down 3/4 of the backer. you now have a line scored in the backer but not into the test piece. Then put your backer in a Vise and twist. the backer will split and be easily removed by hand. then minimal grinding is needed,
i would love a t/shirt but with this virus shipping is taking nearly 4-6months to Oz,when airlines are flying more frequently then i will consider it. Thankyou for doing this channel it is sooooogood for a beginner, also being a f.Love it
I built one of the benders using the specs you used same press from harbor frieght don't have the air Jack just the pump but I've been welding plates and bending like crazy so glad you put that episode out
I just ordered two of those grinding disks on Amazon. Damn man! I've never had disks hold up like that before! A little spendy but will hopefully pay for themselves through longevity. I'm going to find out.
Hopefully I pass my Bend test tomarrow for my job interview my pay rate depends on it I'm getting nervous 😅 Its been a year since I graduated college and that's the last time I welded I passed my Bend tests in college but damn jobs make my nerves go crazy
Would you ever do a CWB F class ticket video? Different than the S class quite a bit, The test consists of a 6010 open root with 7018 hot pass, fill and cap also with 7018. Then you also complete a fillet weld break test. Certifies you for open root and fillet welds. It is a common procedure you need in pile driving, as sometimes you will have to splice piles with a 6010 open root.
Grinding the material induces a strain hardening at that location . This rises the shear stress required to rapture the material and consequently draw sort of unreliability in final results.
I never used backing strips on my bend tests back in vocational school passed on my second test. Root passed both times face on the first was bad. Used a track torch to cut the bevel on my test metal. Cut the test pieces on the band-saw
I didn't use a strip either Id tack it at the ends so i can then tack it standing on another plate to my table then fill the root letting the arc fill in before i push it through then made the face with stringers 2 on the root pass then 3 over the last two stringers bottom to top with all 5 passes then grinded.
I was wondering. The reason you don't want to put it in cool water is just because to avoid warping and cracking of the material? I watched your whole video. Very informative. Boy, do I have some work ahead of me to get that good!
Sure made a lot of extra work on my recent failed tests :( And the instructor wanted every ENTIRE coupon (four) ground entirely clean, with no vise to hold it and a worn ass grinding disk... sigh
i like to blame my failures on lack of coupon preperation. i told my instructor that my lack of prep caused my busted test. ive never seen a bigger eye roll lol
So much for the “common knowledge” that a weld joint is brittle! Are there welder certification requirements for tensile testing? I’d like to see if the tensile failure point is in the parent metal, or at the fusion point of weld material to parent metal.
Definitely, although I still recommend wearing hearing protection. It’s more of a loud scraping than a grinding noise. And it takes off mill scale with the quickness.
I need some serious help, I did a 7018 open butt, I did a root pass with a 6010 in a 1/4 inch groove and filled it in with a 7018 1/8th rod. I back gouged the back but messed up on the gouge and now I have two gouges and they are messy. Should I fill up both gouges? Or just start over
ok I am having problems with my weld test were the I have done it 5 different times and I have passed 1 but these teacher keep feeling me due to micro-cracks and it is pissing me off
Not sure what asme standard you are work in to but you should not oxy/acetylene cut weld test coupons ,you should use a band or mechanical saw to do the cutting of test coupon, the heat of the flame will effect the mechanical properties of the weld, could go on but enough said the rest of he vid was ok
Txs for this great video…I’m starting my Students on this test….how would you recommend building up their skills to that level..what are the defects permissible….cheers Norm
@Weld.com I have put a slight reverse bend in my plates after doing the tack weld(mostly on open root) so that when the heat of the welds start to pull the pieces inward to the center, it actually pulls them flat. Does that eliminate those coupons from a test parameter? I have other issues with welding to pass bend tests that would not be associated with the previous question. I’m trying to figure out what I need to do to get to the point of actually being able to pass bend tests.
Man I just can't get my damn welds to look as good as these..the past few weeks at school have been very discouraging for me. I'm having such a hard time passing my bends. To the point where I'm starting to question if I chose the right path. I'm pretty damn good at Flux and MIG, but anyone can be good at those procedures.

Agreed lots of people do not understand the metallurgy, math and physics that goes into each weld.

Im so high bruh im not a welder nor do i plan on being one yet i watched this whole thing
Same brotha

Foreshadowing see ya soon
Yo u welding yet bro

Yep. All of that instruction was totally consistent with my training. The bend prep details are vital!

Our bending machine at school also has a sign hanging from it that says "heart breaker" how funny lol

Good timing I just passed an 4g overhead bend test and 3g vert up open root bend test
I busted out a test because of grinding wrong years back. Does make a difference. Great video.
What an awesome oxy/acetylene cutting skill!
Thank you, I do what I can.
cutting, beveling and washing is as much of a skill as welding.
Yeah no doubt that was a low key flex lol

Thanks I'll try this out so I don't have to carbon arc gouge my test plates.
I have a piece I just finished urging yesterday on a 1G. Can’t wait to bend it tomorrow at the welding shop. It’s my second bend test.
Great in depth explanation. I watched because I’m about to take my first bend test in a few weeks.

The welding was easy. Test prep was the hard part. I have very little torch experience and we had to cut backing strap off with the torch.
Another great video always nice to know we’re trying to improve everybody thanks for the help
Thanks for watching
Nice now to start the bend test iPhone 6 Plus is required
Im not a welder ...
im not planning to weld anything....
but i still watched whole video.
Thank you for taking the time and care to explain so well. Much appreciated

Great explanation for our students at Lee College Baytown Tx.

What kind of disks were they?
Pferd victograin is insane!
As a welder fixing to take his welding test. Watching this helps but also gives me extreme anxiety on the bending part!
You got this!
Thanks again. I have a bend test coming up for a potential cert so this is a review.

My heart rate spiked the moment that press got going and it wasn’t even my weld being tested 😂😂
Awesome work RB!
Thanks, I've been doing a lot of these, lol. One thing i was doing wrong was trying to essentially gouge out my back strip.
I was wondering. The reason you don't want to put it in cool water is just because to avoid warping and cracking of the material? I watched your whole video. Very informative. Boy, do I have some work ahead of me to get that good!

Hello can you please make a video on aluminium weld testing. Also the process of test specimen preparation.

😂😂😂 we were doing this in the 70s cutting test coupons with a torch 🧐🧐🧐
Thank you for the qualitiy of the knowledge that you guys are sharing
I iron worked for a while and I picked up on simple welding very quickly however I’d like to understand how to do better.
I’m not familiar with AWS, but ASME and API 1104 allow corner tears as long as they don’t tie to a discontinuity
Thoes gloves you used during the grinding look aweasome. Need to get me a pair of thoes
Doesn't flame cutting potentially alter the characteristics of the metal in the test?
Sure made a lot of extra work on my recent failed tests :( And the instructor wanted every ENTIRE coupon (four) ground entirely clean, with no vise to hold it and a worn ass grinding disk... sigh
Yes you can bust a test if you don't prepare your coupons right. All most happened to me once.
i like to blame my failures on lack of coupon preperation. i told my instructor that my lack of prep caused my busted test. ive never seen a bigger eye roll lol
all my practice has been open root, don't worry about that backing strip.
At my welding class we take our backing strips off via carbon arc gouging the center and then taking a hammer and chisel and wedging it off.
Well planned and well demonstrated!
Man i got nervous watching these bend and they weren't even my coupons!
So much for the “common knowledge” that a weld joint is brittle! Are there welder certification requirements for tensile testing? I’d like to see if the tensile failure point is in the parent metal, or at the fusion point of weld material to parent metal.
The BIGGEST thing when it comes to a weld test NEVER cool down the plates, it’ll weaken the metal.
Is this a standard test for welding school?
Really great video. I just looked up the Pferd CC Grind. The literature says it's 50 percent quieter. Do you notice a difference in the noise level?
Definitely, although I still recommend wearing hearing protection. It’s more of a loud scraping than a grinding noise. And it takes off mill scale with the quickness.
Yep,quieter.
Failed my bend test today all 3 or4 pieces looked good only one failed but ill try again tomarrow
What's that black thing on your grinder half way around the disc?
That's a paper weight or a door stop
Here I am about to explain it's purpose like an idiot. Yeah, it's good for keeping parts in then losing them later.
Great video guys! Always learning something! Thanks

How many bend test required for certificate?
please sir how can i purchase the hand book you aee use. what is the name of the book. i just started learning welding. your video has been helpful.

It's a quicker cheaper "equivalent" to testing tensile strength.
