I know you were trying to set a fast time here, but I’d love to hear what settings would you recommend for sliding around on tarmac. Such as linking slides, donuts, etc. For donuts, I have found that "Auto-" works well because the diff is more open initially to help the car kick out but then locks up to help pull the front end around after you break traction. @@chrisatkinson7431 haha i got a reply from a pro WRC driver .You made my day😀😀 .i have a question for you Chris i watched that documentary on discovery channel called "engineering the World rally" and in that series there was an underlying techincal issue with the Hawkeye STI you raced that was causing the handling to be unpredictable on the limit. Did you ever resolve the issue ? And what was its cause ? Was it the gearbox oil pump and the front LSD. I ask as i have the same car .Thanks for reading my messege😂😂😂😂😂👏👏👏👏👏
Chris, thanks for the demo of how to drive these cars how they've been built for. I'm a big Subaru fan since late 90's - early 2000, big Subaru WRT fan up until Subaru withdraw from WRC. I have had a few of them, Impreza WRX and WRX STi but now being a recent GR Yaris owner ("Track Pack" in France = "Rallye Edition" in Oz with the two LSD) I must say that I feel the Yaris to be equivalent to the Subaru (especially the 2007 STi), even maybe a little more nimble through the left-right or right-left tighter corners. The 2012 STi I had felt heavier and clumsier even though it had Suretrac diffs. Let's see the same comparison with the GR Yaris "Rallye Edition" ! Thanks again !
I own a 2006 WRX STi and was told that locking the centre diff on grippy surfaces is not good for the transmission, why did Chris decide to use it on the track?
Normally they work better on tarmac with the diff more open, but it had been damp in the morning and a few of the corners had dirt on them! I found a slight edge in traction off the corners with the diff locked. I tried several settings, but the best lap time was with it locked. I wouldn't drive around all day like that.
Wow....just wow, never thought this little runt would hold its own against the STI! I knew the VW GTI would be more it's competition, but it was mere milliseconds behind the GTI and just 1/8th off the STI. Definitely would love to see a review of the upgraded spec'd variant you mentioned towards the end.
Great video and great commentary. Do you think the STI would perform better on different tyres? The stock Yokohama Advan Sport seem pretty well spec'd but there could be more potential perhaps?
@@bobbyaustralia8509 Sry for late reply, but what precisely do you mean by that? 50:50 means each driven axle gets equal torque. A locked center diff would do that, for instance. The old WRX with viscous center diff also is 50:50 in most conditions. If what you're saying is the differential is not "slipping" so the shafts are going the same speed, I think that makes sense.
Great content Atko. Good on ya! I’m sure you’re on it, but a rematch with the Rallye would be great to see. It would also be great to see a flying lap with a standard WRX (FA20) compared to the STI (EJ25). A kind of “new vs old” tech comparo. Having FA20 would be great content and interesting lap times to have on the board for when the MY22 WRX with FA24 is announced and can be tested.
@@CarExpertAus would be epic to see an FA20 WRX on track to compare them all, the WRX is very capable on track and would think it might match the STI with Chris at the wheel.
The FA20 is a good motor, especially if you get a JDM spec WRX or Levorg which use the 221kw version and match the WRX STI. I have the JDM Levorg myself, and really enjoy it. The 221kw engine matched to the CVT actually works well, and the 0-100 time is actually the same as the manual STI as well plus it gives surprisingly good economy the rest of the time when you are driving sensibly so it is very easy to live with as a daily driver.
Love this, Atko. As a WRX STi owner who recently test drove the GR Yaris, I too felt so much similarity between how the two drove. Been waiting to see a direct head-to-head like this! What were your top 3 driving tips for the STI?
@@philiphutton9422 No, here. The STi is too practical everywhere else. 4 adults, massive boot, great visibility, better cabin finish everywhere, proven engine, parts for years to come?. If it was just me in the car and predominantly used it as a drivers car for cruises with mates or track days, I'd purchase the rallye for sure.
Thanks mate! I am doing up the written story on the STI at the moment. But Here are my top 3 anyway. 1. Don't carry too much speed on entry, you will struggle to rotate the car. 2. Aim to get the car as straight as possible as early as possible, so you can get hard on the throttle 3. But you must start to straighten the car before even thinking of touching the throttle.
@@scottiewardle 100% agree with your comments. I purchased a spec r STI last year new & also drove the GR yaris before committing to the subie. Both cars were similar in driving but the STI just has so much for on offer. Better interior, boot is massive, can easily carry 4 adults + luggage with ease, can fit both kid seats in the rear & no issues with being a 3dr. Super happy with the purchase and no regrets whatsoever.
Atko has so much on the ball not just as a driver but as a communicator/ automotive analyst. Always a pleasure to see Chris flog the heck out of any car. Well done...and thank you!
I am so glad you are doing review Chris. Finally a real expert. I do have one question and anyone please enlighten me. I always thought that locking the diffs on smooth surfaces like tarmac was a no-no?? I was under the impression that was only advised to do on gravel or other loose surfaces?
Thanks mate, glad you enjoyed it! As long as you have some slip across the axles then it should be fine. You just don't want to be driving round on normal roads like this, or at a slower speed. It had been a little damp that morning, and the grip was a bit lower as well, thats why it worked better in that setting. Normally I would run it more open on tarmac.

Thanks again !
the first time i saw this channel, the way he drives is super amazing i did remember chris harris style of reviewing but maybe better wow! subscribe
8:17 - that would usually get you in trouble with the engine shop Chris?
almost a money shift?
@@phantommedia9964 certainly a decent buzz - good test of the valve train. Worst is usually 4-5 and finding 3 instead.
He down shifted to the right gear but just way too early, didn’t slow down enough first
@@ValdeSanus There's another guy on YT he overrevved once and actually broke the valve train.
Now this is a proper fuckin review dude, better than any other TH-camr tbh
Would like yo see a GR Corolla instead of a Yaris tho
Excellent review!!
I own a 2017 STI, taken mine on track a few times but nowhere near as good as how you push it, enjoyed your video! 🤙🏽
hot laps and comparisons between cars are always best
Yaris is a little box of fun!
When I see Atko back in a Subaru I know it’s going to be a good video!
I would love to see how veloster N doing track with STI
Would love to
I miss seeing Atko and the whole team in rallycross sports and actions. Didn't know he's now a part of a car review show. Way to go Atko!
Hearing the words, “Raceway” and “Yaris” in the same sentence made me laugh. 😂
This man can drive drive. Well done mate !
When are we seeing the fair comparison? 'Toyota GR Yaris Rallye v Subaru Impreza WRX STI '. wanted so long that the STi left the chat...
Happy to see you put the sti in full lock. I don’t see that as often as I’d like.
The STI always turns heads coming down the road.
Especially the 90's models.
Awesome driving. 👏👏👏👏
Anyone born before 2000 will really have appreciated this. And I hope many born after then as well.
I own a 2006 WRX STi and was told that locking the centre diff on grippy surfaces is not good for the transmission, why did Chris decide to use it on the track?
Curious about this as well good catch
Normally they work better on tarmac with the diff more open, but it had been damp in the morning and a few of the corners had dirt on them! I found a slight edge in traction off the corners with the diff locked. I tried several settings, but the best lap time was with it locked. I wouldn't drive around all day like that.
@@chrisatkinson7431 ahhh ok makes sense. Thanks for the reply. Great driving as always 💪
Just for thrashing those cars like that, with confidence, you have a subscriber for life.
The GTI doesn't have AWD.
Good to see an aussie car reviewer who has real professional racing experience. Good to hear real-world engine sounds too.
Thanks Alex!
this guy know how to drive tho😎
greetings from malaysia bro 🇲🇾
You drove while commenting just like the STIG from Fifth Gear ,more better i think..Greatest Video Review I've Seen.
Great video and great commentary. Do you think the STI would perform better on different tyres? The stock Yokohama Advan Sport seem pretty well spec'd but there could be more potential perhaps?
ANY car would perform on better tires.
For sure the Subaru could handle better rubber, would be great to compare them on identical specs.
This man's car reviews makes me wanna go track my car
What driving mode was the yaris in, what power split were you using?
Yes, I was wondering that too. Sport is rear-biased and more playful and Track is 50:50 and intended to be faster.
@@januszm5424 50:50 means 0 mesh across the driveshaft, and in transaxles that means the power is all on the half-shaft
This is the kind of car reviewer that i am looking for. Now every car will be reviewed fairly 'cause he can put out every car's full potential👌
😁
Thanks mate! Love all the suggestions... I actually had the Yaris at the track on 2 separate days, and did identical times. The STI only had one go.
Holy smokes this guy can drive! Finally a reviewer that drives the cars the way they should be!
The Yaris GS is a new kind of animal! I hope Toyota brings more to the table and please bring them to America!!!!!!
Chris Atkinson doing car reviews? Final someone that actually knows how to drive. So glad I got your signature before you left Subaru Rallycross.
Love this, Atko. As a WRX STi owner who recently test drove the GR Yaris, I too felt so much similarity between how the two drove. Been waiting to see a direct head-to-head like this! What were your top 3 driving tips for the STI?
Out of interest as a fellow STI owner, would you swap the STI for a Yaris?
@@philiphutton9422 No, here. The STi is too practical everywhere else. 4 adults, massive boot, great visibility, better cabin finish everywhere, proven engine, parts for years to come?. If it was just me in the car and predominantly used it as a drivers car for cruises with mates or track days, I'd purchase the rallye for sure.
Thanks mate! I am doing up the written story on the STI at the moment. But Here are my top 3 anyway.
1. Don't carry too much speed on entry, you will struggle to rotate the car.
2. Aim to get the car as straight as possible as early as possible, so you can get hard on the throttle
3. But you must start to straighten the car before even thinking of touching the throttle.
@@chrisatkinson7431 I thought so, the back doesn't swing into place fast enough.....
This is guy can drive also gives a good honest fair review on both cars
Great video, loving the comparisons and prodiction quality!
Thank you!
Thanks mate!
This guy is a beast of a driver
awesome test
Thanks!
Just subscribed. Great to see tests by a top competition driver.
We have plenty of other tests by Atko on the channel and more to come!
