This video is a very good idea to show people some of the basics required for maintaining such a complex ecosystem. Thanks for posting one of these very rare maintenance videos.
It is a Kent scrapper handle wrapped in a piece of Mr. Clean Magic eraser. The Magic eraser is a melamine sponge that is NOT toxic and does a terrific job of cleaning the acrylic without scratching. Peter
Janet, thanks, the hose attachment was custom made. The faucet is threaded so that we can put a garden hose attachment then we cut it down so it wouldnt be too long. It works well with the added pressure to clean the filter bags.
Yes they do but its not the 'snow globe' behaviour that is the clue. It is the discovery of coral growing where previously non existed. Its subtle but still a wonderful discovery when you happen on new locations that are a natural progression of the reef building that coral engages in. Peter
I have a sohol in my care that does the same thing! Fee tip if you want it. Magic erasers work great on acrylic. Ive been using them for years. Make sure you use the original one without any chemicals in them. Put them between the inside magnet and the acrylic and boom. Clean! You can cut them into thin sheets too.
Garry Thomas All the lights are LED and PAR measurements are well represented for coral health and growth. The manufacturer is Orphek but I suspect the industry at large has caught up by now with the quality that coral demands.
We use tap water which has a large whole home water softener as well as a huge canister of carbon attached to it. After washing the bags we rinse them in RO/DI water before putting them back into play. Peter
I use a two minute rule that I established after careful observation of all the animals in the tank and their feeding behaviour. Its a carful balance between feeding enough and still leaving enough appetite to have the fish grazing normally on the reef as they do in the wild. I'm very happy with the overall health of the fish in the display tank.
When it comes to private in home coral reef tanks the most amazing tank in the world is Chingchai's tank in Bangkok Thailand. We are friends but his is the best in the world. Thank you for your generous praise. Peter
Wow you fed the hell out of those fish. When I first saw the bio load I was shocked until I saw the filter room! You have a skimmer big enough to be used in aquarium shops like 2 of the 3 I worked at. Do you just use a 3 or 4 minute feeding rule or do you weigh out portions?
The short answer is yes but the long explanation is more complex than I really want to take here. The food supply coming from the ecosystem is generated not only in the display tank but from the refugium and sump as well as the hydroponic mangrove wall units in the fish room.
I've been using the Orpheks for almost two years. I have around 35 units. I am very happy with the results as far as the light spectrum for my SPS corals but I do have serious doubts about the controllers. I think they could be considerably better quality. Peter
The display tank and fish room tanks are cleaned completely twice a week. This keeps the glass clean and I have never had to apologize once for the appearance of the glass. It always looks pristine and thats what I want to maintain. It would be terrible to have this kind of investment and not enjoy it 7 days a week and not just whenever there is a tour. Peter
Peter, Fantastic tank. Comparing your tank to Ching's is like comparing Einstein to Newton. You just can't do it! What brand of salt are you using, how often and how much water are they changing, what Ca reactor do you use? Are you supplementing Kalwasser as well? Are you dripping Lanthanum Chloride or using a P04 binder? Thanks
Magnificent fish tank! But I wonder how much your electricity & water bills run up each month. I want to keep fishes, but I travel out of town very often :(
for a tank this size, its easily few hundred a month; maintenance of such a large tank along with its support system likely comes with a monthly expense over 1k; it's likely closer to a couple of thousand - think manpower too; analogous to running a small fish store or running a show tank in a public aquarium
Thanks for the advice. I know its good advice because I have been using Magic Erasers for the last 3 years. In fact I use so many (I have almost 50 feet of Acrylic cleaned twice a week) that I have ordered the same generic product from a reliable manufacturer in china. I was able to get the size exactly matched to my magnets and to the exact thickness I wanted with no chemicals added. Peter
You can buy that hose attachment at home depot for about five bucks. Can only use it on a standard faucet, not the pull out kind. You just need to remove the airator on the faucet and screw the new one in every time you do a water change or just want to clean filter media and the like without going to an outside hose bib. Really helps with water changes because u can adjust the temp of the water. Anyway, just wanted to comment They also sell a complete hose and faucet attachment at pet smart
Can you post up a video a little more in depth of your water control room as far as your skimmer, calcium reactor, lighting and other equipment... I am very impressed with your tank. I had a 75 gallon setup for about 7 years and miss it a lot but I will be getting back into reef tanks in a couple years once my daughter is older. I will be having a custom 150-200 gallon cube tank built and would like some insight as to what controllers you use and lighting. My main problem I had was my tank over heating during the summer months. I was running 2 400 watt MH bulbs and a few vho strips but with a fully enclosed hood it was just boiling the water. I bought a small chiller but it had to run almost non stop to keep the water under 80 degrees. When I set my new tank up I am hoping I will be able to plumb it thru a wall and have all my equipment in the garage or a closet so you only see the tank from inside the house.
Tacomaguy458 Three months ago I had a catastrophic failure (manufacturers defect) and so I don't have a tank at the moment. The experience is well documented on my thread at reef central. As far as heat goes, I would highly recommend LED's over MH. They run cool and cost considerably less to operate. In many respects the technology has improved to the point that the quality of the light spectrum is as good if not better than MH. I also recommend Abyzz pumps from Germany. They are DC pumps that run cool and add NO heat to the tank. They are dead quiet and are 80 less costly to operate over standard pumps. They are appropriate for closed loops and they are supposedly good for 12 or more years. Both the pumps and the LED's are initially more expensive to buy but much much cheaper to run in the long run. I never had to run my chillers once (I had two) and my bet is that I had a warmer environment than you do......certainly less rain. Peter
peters fish tank I actually just went to petco and bought a 40 gal breeder to get some rock cured and start a frag / quarantine tank. I have decided to go with the mp40 powerhead and a kessil A360WE for the 40 that will all transfer to my main tank when I have it built. Its so bad how fast you get bit by "the bug" when you start thinking about getting back into reefing but on the plus side I know where I have gone wrong in the past and can build new with the knowledge to do it correctly. Thats a real bummer about your tank. I'll have to check out that website. I am not a member on any forums anymore but now that I am getting back into it I will have to get some info.
So you instead of just writing 'Touch the sky' (three words) you wrote 10 instead and made me with low bandwidth scroll to the end of your video. Well played.
Un... be...lieavable... the most beautiful tank I have ever seen in my life... (sorry for being rude... but) May I ask how much total investment went into something like this?
I don't mean to be a smart ass but several things in this tank have remarkable value and it would require years of experience and knowledge along with just plain time to establish. Several specimens in there are worth thousands and cannot be simply bought at that size.
Hello Mr Peter can you please advise what type of micron sacks do you using , mine it is not so easy to clean like i see here that your service guy just cleaning them with a simple hose garden?
Sorry peter but I have to disagree. Your tank is better than his i just watched your video for the first time, then browsed over to look at said "Chingchai's tank" and in my personal opinion your tank is just jaw drooping. Thanks for sharing your love for this hobby to the word to inspire people like my self. I would love to see your tank in person. I would be gazing at it for hours in aww.
Reverse osmosis......it is a process that takes water from a public source and removes all impurities.....in my case to a level that is lower than 0 parts per million. I can then use that water as the foundation for creating the salt water for tank and supporting systems. I exchange about 200 gal per week from the system.
I have two that appear to have paired nicely and yes it is very very challenging to have more than one in the same tank. They are extremely territorial and aggressive to the same species, especially in a closed system. It is NOT recommended to even try having more than one in less than 1000 gal MINIMUM!!!!
Barrady How do you know? what happend? That really sucks,I would be mad and sad at the same time. All the money and time put in. I'm sure he's done with this hobby.

One of the best looking tanks I have ever seen.
Absolutely STUNNING! I would never leave the house!
I liked the structured work ... Amazing aquarium
Amazing tank Peter, one to be very proud of, look forward to seeing more in the future.
This tank is amazing! Great work all of you guys!
Thank you very much......
Peter
peters fish tank
Breathtaking, inspiring even. Great work and please keep it up Peter!!!

beautiful and very healthy looking fish.....
This is an amazing video thanks for uploading it.

And here i thought that building my 180 was going to make me the big shit. How wrong was I. Awesome tank.
WOW just wow. show us more of the equipment and filtration!!!
I have a sohol in my care that does the same thing! Fee tip if you want it. Magic erasers work great on acrylic. Ive been using them for years. Haha, love that the tang is trying to fend off his home from the invading cleaning crew. :P
Great looking tank. Im only working on a nano reef on my channel right now. Very cool video
I love the ending watching all the fish eat.
Me too!!!!!!!!
Peter
peters fish tank What lighting and kelvin, is there above this amazing tank?

Gives new meaning to the word 'reefer'
what an awesome tank. im speechless
possibly the best reef on the internet...wow
wow the tank looks amazing!!!!
Very awesome tank. What wattage and spectrum lighting are you using?
Wow what an amazing set up in tank happy reefing

Truly stunning . My dream setup . But need to win lottery lol
I really enjoyed this! Thank you!
Well done sir! Well Done!

Great Video very helpful.. Thank You .... I was wondering, how much do you feed your Tank? And what is your feeding schedule?
this tank is just a dream....
Amazing tank
Thank you very much......
Peter
Great job
Can tell that Sohal owns that tank.
Super cool !
Awsome fish tank

Awesome tank Peter! Do your corals spawn? specifically the acroporas?

Another saltwater enthusiast from your area....Lovely tank. Would be nice to see in person I bet! Have you visited Shawn's store?
nice aquarium setup
Thank you.....

Thanks sir. That's quite one big passion, considered the high expenses we have to fork out to keep this marvelous little life gems

Hi! can i have the contact of your Chinese manufacturer to make for me that kind of reef.
How much would a set up like this cost ? 10k-20k range? AMAZING!
amazing tank. i love how many tangs that you have in there. im just curious, but how big is your tank?
You can buy that hose attachment at home depot for about five bucks. Can only use it on a standard faucet, not the pull out kind. Nice routine. I get so sick of those socks. You use a calcium reactor or use a doser? I can imagine how much calcium you use in that tank...
love it
So you instead of just writing 'Touch the sky' (three words) you wrote 10 instead and made me with low bandwidth scroll to the end of your video. Well played.
Awesome tank! A little disappointed though to see the maintenance guy keeping serpent sea stars out of the water.
Un... be...lieavable... the most beautiful tank I have ever seen in my life... (sorry for being rude... but) May I ask how much total investment went into something like this?
Also, do your corals get eaten by any of your angles or butterflys?
The fish go nuts
Wow Thank for this Great Video . Where can i get that Hose attachment ? Can you post link .
yes very much so. The major food for the corals is Reef Roids but the very best form of coral nutrients is fish poop!!!
I feed the fish Mysis, brine, cyclopeeze and spirolina flakes. I also feed reef roids for the coral.
Peter
i did a dip on a corral on a rock and a bunch of these were in it...wow
I don't mean to be a smart ass but several things in this tank have remarkable value and it would require years of experience and knowledge along with just plain time to establish. Several specimens in there are worth thousands and cannot be simply bought at that size.
the display is around 1350 but the whole system is probably closer to 2,000 gal
Peter
subbed
That's something I want to build in to my house, how often do you clean the tank,?
Is that flake food or something else? Thank you Jim Fisher.
flake food but the best food comes from the reef itself.............
More Peter. More..
was it just me or was that a lot of food
Thats a lot of food!
The short answer is tap water is NOT good for a salt water coral reef tank. The best practice is to use RO/DI whenever and wherever possible.
Peter
Hello Mr Peter can you please advise what type of micron sacks do you using , mine it is not so easy to clean like i see here that your service guy just cleaning them with a simple hose garden?
Hi Peter, How long have you been using these led fixtures. I have been using orphek (pr 156) fixture but I am totaly unsatisfied with it.
If I wanted to break in your house and steel this tank how many people would I need to lift it?
please do a video on a overview of the sump and filtration
Hello peter will you do update please love to see how tank is coming along. Thanks
He doesn't keep him out of the water.....just did for that brief shot. That starfish stays wet except when he goes walkabout on his own!!!!
Sorry peter but I have to disagree. Is it better to use distilled water over faucet water, or what is the best water to use?
Can someone go through the plumbing/sump and refugium for this tank. Just from some of the pics, it looks amazing.
do you clean the filter socks with rodi water or tap water?
thanks!
just read the catastrophy on reef central....are you looking to rebuild?
Is it possible for your tank to become an ecosystem? and grow its own food supply for your fish like brine?
What would be the next step for fish after clowns?
Ok Great I'll gonna see if i can make one. Thank you

I can then use that water as the foundation for creating the salt water for tank and supporting systems. I exchange about 200 gal per week from the system.
Is the moorish idol still alive? I've heard they are extremely hard to keep.
I have a lot of fresh water tanks but not a huge saltwater tank like yours.
How do you keep your Moorish Idol’s alive?
Would like some of those fishes
Do you have a roughness of how many fish are in the tank
Spirulina flakes (every two or three days)
Frozen Brine Shrimp
Frozen Mysis Shrimp
and Cyclopeeze (frozen)
these are two hundred micron filter bags. I go through about 100 a year.
I have two that appear to have paired nicely and yes it is very very challenging to have more than one in the same tank. They are extremely territorial and aggressive to the same species, especially in a closed system. It is NOT recommended to even try having more than one in less than 1000 gal MINIMUM!!!!
What do you feed the fish?
You should really re--shoot this in 4k. 720p looks horrible. nice tank though.
The tank had a major leak and crashed.. this tank no longer exists :(
Barrady How do you know? what happend?
That really sucks,I would be mad and sad at the same time. All the money and time put in. I'm sure he's done with this hobby.
