J'ai vu La juive, dans ma jeunesse, avec l'inoubliable Tony Poncet qui y triomphait, c'était un spectacle grandiose scéniquement et vocalement. Là, Eléazar a une voix correcte, mais inappropriée au rôle, et scéniquement c'est grotesque
Quelle chance d'avoir vu Tony Poncet dans "La Juive", qu'est-ce que je ne donnerais pas pour avoir eu ce bonheur. Quand on entend la nullité des chanteurs actuels, dont cette prestation calamiteuse est un bon exemple, on est désespéré. Quelle chute abyssale... Heureusement qu'il nous reste les vieux enregistrements.
@@fan2jnrc Très juste, et en particulier les enregistrements en direct, car même si certains disques sont bons, aucun ne rend la splendeur de son chant dans plusieurs des grands ouvrages qu'il a abordés. Ici, justement, dans La juive, il était et reste insurpassable. J'ai eu le bonheur de l'entendre environ 30 fois sur scène. Je pense qu'il a atteint le sommet de son art dans ce rôle et dans Les huguenots
Dear OperVision -- I loved this performance of La Juive. The staging of Eudoxie's Act 2 aria and the performer herself were the funniest, over the top experience I ever had in an opera. As La Juive is no longer available to view in its whole, I wondered if you could post a clip of this aria.

Having seen many plays in the '60s and '70s where actors were off the stage and into the audience, with varying results, I think it rarely works. The young people in the first row were clearly trying to refrain from laughing, and this during the scene that is the emotional core of the opera. A directorial misjudgement. IMHO
That's horrible in any field. The voice is extremely weak and strangled (a far cry from Adolphe Nourrit, the role's creator, who sang the entire role in chest voice), his French is execrable and incomprehensible, the choruses are abysmally lame, the whole thing is taken far too slowly, and let's not even mention the filthy staging. It's an all-out massacre. Halévy's masterpiece didn't deserve that.
You have zero idea of what a Nourrit sounded like. No one does. If you hear how singing has changed since the invention of the gramophone, it’s unlikely his “singing entirely in chest” is what you think it is. Stop glamorizing a past you know nothing about
Have you actually heard Roy live? I guess you haven't? I've seen him several times and gotta say, that he is one of those tenors that you can hear all the way to the back.

No voice. He is an amateur with amplification. Still amplified crap.

I've seen him several times and gotta say, that he is one of those tenors that you can hear all the way to the back.
You can even hear it in the section at 5:15 how his voice rings in the large room! :-)
I was there when this was recorded. Roy its fabulous. Everyone in the room was crying. It's such a heavy repertoire and he can sing it perfectly.
