It's like when people discuss whether graffiti is or isn't art. Art isn't defined by the medium, it's defined by the ideas, the work and talent that go into it, and of course the final product. It doesn't matter if it's autotune or vocoder he's using, or if you find it wrong that he uses either one at all. This song is one of the most beautiful things I've heard in my life, and it is art, and I am not about to tell this great artist how to make his art, I will enjoy it.
What the f just happened..... did jazz and the iver that is bon just create a beautiful bumble gum baby???? Serendipity!!!! The voice synth is a little odd... but odd and bon iver are a marriage made in music heaven.... love love love
I'm tearing up, acrost your face Move dust through the light To fide your name It's something fane This is not a place Not yet awake, I'm raised of make Still alive who you love Still alive who you love Still alive who you love In a mother, out a moth Furling forests for the soft Gotta know been lead aloft So I'm ridding all your stories What I know, what it is, is pouring - wire it up! You're breaking your ground
A vocoder, or more accurately "the Messina" in this case, deliberately distorts the voice in real time, like a whammy bar on an electric guitar. It's a musical choice. Some people enjoy it. Others don't. I wonder if people complained this way about distortion on electric guitars when it appeared. "That song was good, but the electric guitar part wrecked it! Only acoustic guitars are real guitars!" If you're not into it, that's fine. Move on. Don't slam it.
I see what people are saying, but I really like the Autotune here. The vast majority of Bon Iver's music has a very organic feel where autotune has no place. This rendition though is different to anything I've ever heard from Bon Iver and I think the Autotune fits the feel.
Autotune is program that runs on a vocoder. It can change the pitch of incoming sounds and apply delays. The vocoder is the piece of hardware that actually does the work, autotune is just one kind of program you can run on it. You actually wouldn't need the autotune program to get the effects he is doing here, but you could adjust it to do this, so I don't know what he is using. One thing autotune can do is correct pitch but obviously that is not what is being done here.
Holocene got the same treatment or so the internet says. I looked up for the video-audio everywhere. But couldn't find it. Is there anyone here who recorded the version? Will he or she please be generous enough to upload it somewhere, where NBC can't fiddle with it?
I consider damn near anything involved in the music making process to be an instrument in achieving the vision of a musician. Using something artistically allows it to be considered an instrument.
Autotune is an instrument like any other. It's easier to accept when you know it's not compensating for an artist being unable to sing in tune. Sufjan Stevens also uses it well as an instrument.
I said 'using it as an instrument' and I stand by that. If Auto-tune isn't considered a valid piece of instrumentation, then neither is any guitar or key effects. It's not like these people can't sing, it's just used to enhance it in some areas. Both examples I listed are from artists who, undoubtedly, can't sing. If you don't get what I'm saying, that's your shortcoming, not mine. No reason for you to act like an idiot shithead about it.
If you find this let me know. I was at the Jimmy Fallon taping and heard it live. It was on NBC website but it was removed awhile ago. Unable to find it since.
If an autotune device is an instrument, then a Boss DD-3 pedal is an instrument. It's just not true. They're modulations to instruments, not instruments themselves.
By the very definition of the word instrument, I am correct. If I said an axe was an instrument used to chop wood, you wouldn't get all up in my shit about the fact that you couldn't bust a solo on it. Autotone is an instrument used to modulate voice. By taking a saw, an instrument used to cut wood, and bowing it, you create controllable sound. The dual instruments of the saw and the bow, neither of which are musical instruments in their right, create music. QED.
@TorminatorDK that was probably the dumbest thing anyone has ever said about this song. people use autotune to sound great, period. not only do they use autotune for voices but for instruments on tracks in the studio... but i agree with @rjkilla84 "song is performed beautifully"
Those who are looking for a video link: vimeo dot com/36554699 make sure to give some thumbs so people can see it! (I did not upload the video, credit to whoever did)
Autotune is an instrument, but not a musical instrument. It is categorized as an audio effect ("artificially created or enhanced sounds, or sound processes used to emphasize artistic or other content of music, or other media" - Wikipedia). "Autotune: a device or facility for tuning something automatically, especially a piece of computer software which enables the correction of an out-of-tune vocal performance." - Oxford Dictionary.
lol, an audio effect can be a musical instrument since LITERALLY ANYTHING IS A MUSICAL INSTRUMENT SO LONG AS YOURE USING IT TO MAKE MUSIC. and seeing how autotune was made for the express purpose of music in mind its, like, ALWAYS a musical instrument unless you just kept the program in its box so you could put it underneath that one fucked up leg of your coffee table to balance it. like why the fuck are people so stupid.
I'm sorry, but you're just fundamentally wrong. What you said betrays an ignorance of musical terminology. Ideological nonsense aside, an instrument is any apparatus used for PRODUCING musical sounds. So an autotune device is just as much an instrument as as a guitar effect pedal. Neither produce the base sound desired, they merely modulate it.
It adds to the song. That's the sound hes going for. Hes nkt doing it to improve the sound of his voice. He does that cuz thst how he wants it to sound in the song.
I have to come back to this every year or so, such a fucking banger. I totally agree about The Roots and Justin doing this album in full.
This would be a sick record. The Roots redoing a bunch of Bon Iver tracks but still have Justin sing them.
12/10 would buy.
Quest Love...from 3:45 to 4:45..absolutely rode that groove. Geniuses making amazing music.
Ahhhh there used to be video of this performance on youtube and it was glorious. Thanks for saving the audio
Here you go.

Fiona Daniel oops lol
God this was so amazing. The Roots and Bon Iver should totally do a little tour together. Would be amazing.

And I’m all for this goddamn funk ass shit.
Let’s be friends.

It’s a subtle auto-tune. And I dig it. Puts a modern twist to an already cool song!
love this.
No one expected the talk box but how dope was that!
You should get a medal for uploading this
OMG THIS IS AMAZING

@rcartertoe & @atbizzle.....its either tube trem or old school amp vibrato

+Nicolás Szumski Only on Vimeo vk.com/video145420893_170551050
Hey man. Thanks a lot! Do you happen to have the Holocene one featuring Roots recorded or something? Thanks again!
If you find this let me know. I was at the Jimmy Fallon taping and heard it live. It was on NBC website but it was removed awhile ago. Unable to find it since.

what is the guitar effect that comes in at 0:57? tremolo?
LOVE the musical arrangement!- Vernon didn't need Autotune.

WHERE IS HOLOCENE FROM THIS SHOW IT HAS BEEN WIPED OFF THE FACE OF THE EARTH. PLEASE SOMEONE HELP
It sounds similar to his collab with Blake for Fall Creek Boys Choir.
@ohtralalafaa justin vernon has been around for a lot longer than james blake!
@ 4:46 - i can hear D'Angelo style
@5:35 - i can hear Me'shell Ndegeocello style...
No need for that vocoder/autotune.. the arr. iz great!
I meant that autotune is not based on a vocoder.
chill about the auto-tune guys...it's just an effect.
Heath ledger 😓
Rest In Peace, miss his acting dayly, such an amazing inspiration
What episode is this on?
Isnt it a vocoder he's using anyway? I dont think there is even any autotune here.
Ever heard of Sufjan Stevens or James Blake, they make great use of autotune too.
Does anyone have the version of Holocene he did with the roots?!?!
stealingroses It looks like every website has taken that down. I'm wandering the same thing: it was amazing.
+Emsy Robinson Jr. :( i would pay an unfair amount of money for a copy of this set.
SO many great live performances on Late Night with Jimmy and the Roots that are probably hidden at NBC somewhere, never to see the light of day again.
@TorminatorDK that was probably the dumbest thing anyone has ever said about this song. people use autotune to sound great, period. not only do they use autotune for voices but for instruments on tracks in the studio... but i agree with @rjkilla84 "song is performed beautifully"
Alright, I can't reason with people who won't try to learn and who don't value evidence.
You're right
3:46
I came.
:-o

Didn't see the episode so I wouldn't know but he does use it. TH-cam/watch?v=bBpvOS7TEBk
no, it's not.
@ohtralalafaa -_-
haha are you serious?

Anusi
Auto Tune ruined it. :(
Take out the autotuned parts and this makes a bomb a$$ instrumental
Lol, thinking an autotune device is an instrument.
this auto tune has really got to stop
Jason Trevino you can't stop Justin

Gahhhh, the fucking auto tuner ruined it for me
