    Working in IT and dev stuff, and being a total PC build-it kinda guy, servers are super, super fun. The hardware is redundant and brutal. We're talking things like 16 physical 12 core Xeons with 2TB of RAM. Heck, there are even system with redundant RAM! That literally means that a whole array of RAM can go down and be hot-swapped while the system is live if some RAM goes bad. It's amazing stuff.

      I knew there was crazy servers but not 16 CPU 12 cores each with 24 threads per cpu and 2tb of ram crazy. How much does something like that even cost 100k?? What's the point

    • @-----------------------------
      @----------------------------- 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      All stuff your average home user doesn't use. Just run over the homelab section. No one cares about redundancy. You're better off going with a ryzen build.

    • @yumri4

      +Sherwin724 until you get a fully loaded enthusiast build that is true but not many ppl pay over $1800 dollars on hardware that adds functionary to the system then max it out so have to buy more
      $1800 for a high end build but around $800 per computer over 200~300 servers is more like $160,00 to $320,00 so little less power per unit is totally Ok but if one breaks a little hic up happens the Master server takes care of the change if Master goes down you should have secondary Master just in case of Master going down tells you which one did in some systems but continues as long as one Master and one slave are around ... each slave machine is basically a 1990 era machine in a server farm but excessive on what it is optimized for and either PCI, PCI express, Fibre, Fiber, Ethernet, or propriety networking

      real server computers cost lot of because if you want real server computer case or its not even case "server rack/shelf and server PC are made for many ssd/hdd and raid. But There is little server pc cases for amateur server host pc But its just for ram and hdd raid and server cpu. GPU will not be that number one things and that server pc even little server pc will cost lot of because if we want build real server pc not just normal desktop with normal windows and cpu. Server pc is just for: (lot of ram memory its the first thing 2. many hard disk drives (RAID) and a lot of space. HDD should also be SAS (really expensive) or SDD. Also, Server processor is expensive if we want real good intel xeon processor or the other. GPU must have a lot of RAM memory (Titan X). But the great thing if Linus could build a server computer and at the same time he would use hdd raid system. Also, a lot of ram memory of more than 64GB, this custom computer project should be different. Linus Sebastian could build a server computer (amateur level) And this computer does not should invest your graphics card and the basic parts. Ram, hdd, fast data, SAS and high-speed processor, or 2x the CPU. Computer price would not be a small (maybe 1500- $ 10,000 a big difference)

      kevin kapela you don't need server hardware to have a server, most home media and file servers are run on standard consumer hardware with out issue.
      You only need server hardware when your system is going to handle a large workload

    • @inidepon
      @inidepon 9 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Server hardware is for security and extra features you don't really need for a simple data server where power outage rarely happens and you don't need 10-20 Gb transfer speeds. A server basically replaces the work of your workstation, so instead of making something and rendering it on the workstation, you render it on the server and you can make more stuff on your workstation

      Simon Ayres sounds good to me, as speed should be overkill on software that is programmed by a decent programmer.

For instance, the base clock on the GTX750ti is just as high (or higher) than other much higher end cards with the same amount of ram, but doesn't perform nearly as well. I seriously wish Linus would stop a little with trying to make it seem like sever CPU's are so much more different. Look at the E3 Xeon line up, they are ALL i7's pretty much. Most of them costing at around i5 price or in between i5 and i7 prices. What ARE differences between an i7 and E3 Xeon? Depending on the model of E3 Xeon, the clock speeds, ALL E3's support ECC RAM, ALL have no built in GPU's (Besides the Xeons that end with the number 5 example: E3 1245), and finally you can't overclock them which is a bummer, but paying for pretty much an i7 at roughly i5 price when you're on a budget is definitely worth not being able to overclock. A big time pro is that Xeons take up less power and do support being on for long periods of time. Another BIG TIME pro for E3 Xeon's is that you CAN use them on LGA 1150 Motherboards, meaning you don't need to buy a stupidly expensive server grade motherboard.

    ? The i7 equivalent Xeons are cheaper than the i7 4770k on NewEgg.

    • @CleggyCool
      @CleggyCool 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They're cheaper than the 3770k, too.
      To be fair, though, it's because they don't have integrated graphics, and you can't really overclock them (not that you'd ever want to with a Xeon).
      It's the reason I bought an E3 1230-v2 for my workstation / gaming rig.

    • @OverruledDood
      @OverruledDood 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      But but gay parents raise gay kids. That's why we don't want them as parents right? So Hell's comment makes sense.
      And 'many' is a bit of a stretch IMO at least. Maybe 'some', and people can be 'bi' as well.
      Though i did suspect he's gay, mostly cause he seemed attractive to me, so I'd like to imagine it was so.
      And DJINFERNO, though yes, makes sense, you don't have to condemn him to 'Hell' for a comment made on youtube. People do it all the time 'do you have a girlfriend yet?' (to males, ppl automatically imply that you're 'straight') --> quite a majority in my experiences.
      I don't turn around and tell them to hope that God forgives them xD.
      It's all fun and games, no harm done. let's all be happy we were born in times with computers and can talk to each other on the interwebz, civil talk, civil.

  • @RileyPoulin
    @RileyPoulin 9 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    Easy answer to video:
    Buy AMD. Most servers use Opteron processors for the reason they get the most bang for the buck. If you can't afford the 550 dollar 16 core with a possible 4 socket board, get a AM3+ board. Servers are about cores, not fake hyper threading cores and GHz. You'll get better server performance from a FX-8320 or any AMD octo-core CPU than your i5 or i7. Plus, AMD CPU's actually handle pure binary code better than Intel's, which may not seem impressive, but when a server is running, that's all it gets from the clients, as where on programs it has to convert the code over to binary first. Cores are more important as the way that they allow more code to be processed. A CPU or program will not use hyperthreading unless the program tells it to use the psuedo cores.
    And before you bring up how superior how great your Intel 8 core is, go look at prices. 150 dollars for a 8320 which works in 30 dollar motherboards, when its over 1100 dollars for your i7 5960x, which REQUIRES a 300 dollar board MINIMUM. Sure, a 30 dollar board isnt great, but it's better than a overpriced fuckin board. Just get a 70 dollar board instead.

      I would like to remind you of an important fact: energy consumption.

    • @Nacalal
      @Nacalal 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      The key difference between intel and AMD is quality
      Many modern programs are starting to use multithread so hyperthreading is much more useful especially if you are using multiple programs at once on one system, IE a barebones server or highest end gaming system running a server for game X with game X running, that or running chrome on it's own because it's a filthy bandwidth whore in both ram and netowork IO
      intel also uses smartcache which alows it to run thorugh incoming data better with less delay
      intel also runs substantially cooler, I run an AMD FX 9370 and it overheats frequently
      in short AMD is good for budget systems but intel is far superior

    • @smasher123ism
      @smasher123ism 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Fuck of

    • @Nacalal
      @Nacalal 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      SniX
      Xeons are server CPUs and they run substantially cooler than AMDs
      the point is that you very much get what you pay for and the FX serise is certainly not the best server CPU but more or less a better choice for mid-low end home systems

    • @chbrules
      @chbrules 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Don't listen to this tard. He's comparing consumer-grade CPUs to server-grade. Apples and oranges. There are many intricate differences between the two, including, but not limited to, cache sizes, core count, ECC support (critical), and instruction sets.
      I work in IT. You can get more core CPUs from Intel's Xeon line than the AMD Opteron line. AMD Opteron is a budget CPU if you don't need the best of the best. This can be fine if you just need things to work, but if you have some heavy-hitting apps, like a server full of mission-critical VMs that run at high loads, you'll want to go the Xeon path.
