Dr. Ali is full of it!!!She has no idea what goes on in the field, she only sees the numbers on the paperwork. She could care less about what actually goes on with public defenders. I'm confused as why the nurse practitioner, the mother whose son that's been locked up ten years, and the guy who's on house arrest couldn't get a lawyer? Lawyers except payment plans from my experience. And can't people on house arrest go to work? Especially since he has to make monthly payments.
I work at a holistic public defender's office in Kansas. We are working to change the system in ways that will help make public defense more accessible and effective. It's a long process to make this happen, and it's heartbreaking to see how underfunded and ignored this RIGHT is. We desperately hope to make the process more efficient while working to create an attorney training pipeline that gets help out to places that need it. It's a very lofty goal, but it's simply and undeniably necessary.
I'm in a rual south georgia town where the police do what they want and having an attorney early is your only hope at proving innocents but even if you do get assigned an attorney does no good when they delay everything and won't even file for an indictment and file formal charges so the attorney's can't even begin to get the facts untill after formal charges so in mean time if your luck to bond out you can't work because your given strick curfew times that aren't reasonable for a job your life is put on hold and upended and most times ruined while you sit woried ,hungry , unable to support your house hold, struggling to survive with no day in sight it seems waiting on the statue of limitations. The law is not on your side, the truth doesn't set you free, and what little rights we think we have are only to the degree that the broken system and corrupt and law breaking officers and officers of the courts allow. If we as THE PEOPLE DO NOT STAND UP TOGETHER THIS WILL NEVER STOP ONLY GET WORSE.
I'm a year a away from my BAS in criminal justice. I want to go to law school in order to become a public defender for juveniles here in chicago. It's not school that I fear (not saying it'll be easy) but as I continue to research the public defender crisis...I can feel myself going bald
Interesting! I'll have to do my research on that. Why do you think that is? From the top of my head I'd say since there are more blue collar criminals than white collar criminals? @@pranavpillai7778
Alan N. Waples is a pathetic public defender in Burlington, Iowa. He had his license to practice law suspended twice and was barred from practicing law twice.
That breaks some people and they lose what it means to be HUMAN. Ive met people that wanted to go back because the world they came home to was to much to adjust to.
You don't want an attorney because they're through the bar association and they're going to side with the de a nobody knows your case better than you do
I can’t imagine what is going through the Republican Supreme Court justices minds to think about up ending another constitutional right that was decided 50 years ago. Can you imagine even an intelligent person defending themselves in a quart room without knowing the rules of evidence, all the legal petitions they need to file, deadlines, Legalese, etc?!

I know someone who is falsely accused of a crime and he has been waiting almost 2 years for a trail.

The public defenders in Burlington, Iowa are a pathetic excuse for attorneys.
Not only do you have the right to representation but you have the right to a "fair and speedy trial".

I want to be a white collar criminal attorney. Criminal law is what interest me. I would say though that federal PDs don't have a crisis.

This is an evil country! God help us!
We in Trinidad and Tobago is still going true this kind of nonsense because of the hi Court sistem is to slow and they're not doing anything to fix it
Paducah ky has only 1 public defender because most of them walked out.
The 6th amendment does no such thing. This "right" was invented in the 1960s in the Gideon v Wainwright case.
I can't stand public defenders
Right of counsel not of attorney..is not the same..
Funny no one agrees with you on that score.
You must be a liar i mean a lawyer, thas why
You don't want an attorney because they're through the bar association and they're going to side with the de a nobody knows your case better than you do
Who can i make s complsint snout my story
This is applauding and something must be done! Our government is in shambles
Public defenders are good if you have federal criminal cases.
