    My father actually ended up in a bit part in the Drew Barrymore movie, "Everybody's Fine". It's kind of toward the end of the movie. In the scene where Barrymore is in the airport, and she's having this heartfelt conversation with the male lead, whoever he was, the terminal is empty. Then you see my father, with his kind of scraggly hair and white beard, walk out of a side hallway, into the terminal, pulling a luggage thing, and walk past them, completely ignoring them. The camera gets some very good shots of him walking right in front of the actors. His friends in the audience, who were also extras, but you never saw their faces (maybe just the backs of their heads.) in the movie. stood up in the theater, giving my father a standing ovation. Haha!! The rest of the audience was kind of clueless. But my father's friends didn't let this go. They were telling the audience that there was a "Star!" among them, embarrassing the hell out of my dad!

    Poison Ivy is probably my favorite Drew Barrymore movie. Becuase she used to get typecast as a loveable and likable character. Here is the opposite, while she is likable at begining, you start to disslike her as the movie goes along. I checked out Poison Ivy 2 & 3. My apologies if someone else mentioned this (there are a lot of comments to sift through), but to Cecil's point about New Line's marketing department being clueless as to how to market a movie "starring" kids that is not actually "for" kids; my response to those marketing dopes would have been "do you remember what Columbia did with 'Stand By Me'?"
    I say that because let's not forget that "Stand By Me" is an R-rated film. Most people do tend to forget that fact because it wound up being very popular with people who weren't even old enough to see it in a theater without a parent present. However, it was still a very successful film, both critically and commercially, and I have to believe that success was not based on families going to see it.
    So, with that in mind, clearly someone in Hollywood, at some point, knew how to market a movie starring kids that wasn't made for kids. The other studios just didn't bother to learn from the success of Columbia in that instance. Then again, maybe New Line was just a one-trick pony at that time, and didn't know how to sell anything other than "Elm Street" to the 17 and older crowd.

    • @TDM1138
      @TDM1138 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Probably the culture of our times. I think if the sex appeal is focused on too hard then a film will get criticized for only using the women as objects. A movie like this shows it can be done, or really several films can, but it just may not be worth even risking backlash to some studios.

    • @popculturewatch8689
      @popculturewatch8689 3 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      As with everything people say are not made anymore, they do. They never stopped. Adult thrillers aren't big anymore. They haven't been pushed in theaters for years, sure. But, plenty of them are streaming. You just have to look. I didn't even know about this movie until it hit VHS. These types of movies were a result of a craze at the time. The "from hell" craze after fatal attraction. If movies made strictly for adults ever becomes popular again, we will see a resurge.

    • @Malum09

    • @julius-stark
      @julius-stark 3 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      @@popculturewatch8689 there's a different between "adult" thrillers and "erotic" thrillers. We've kind of revered back to the puritan era where nudity is strongly frowned upon. Even those awful 50 Shades of Grey movies were pretty tame compared to the movies of the 70s/80s/90s.
      There are still some foreign countries that make "sexy" movies but almost no Western English speaking countries make them anymore.

    • @julius-stark
      @julius-stark 3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      @@Malum09 isn't that weird though? Like I love the John Wick movies, it's okay to show dudes getting shot in the face for 2 hours, but show two people having intimate simulated sex has now become a problem. It's like the puritans finally won.

  • @docsamson198
    @docsamson198 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    This marketing problem for this movie reminds me of what happened with Cruel Intentions. You had Sarah Michelle Gellar in the lead, but it wasn't a teenybopper movie, nor was it made for Buffy fans. So you had this sophisticated and mature film that people automatically and wrongly thought was a silly sex romp. Thanks, Cecil. Magnificent job, as always.

    • @nu-metalfan2654
      @nu-metalfan2654 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @docsamson198. Some teen movies can get very dark like Thirteen, The Virgin Suicides, Kids, Ken Park, Kidulthood, Bully, Elephant, those movies explores themes like school shootings, suicide, depression, underage sex, underage drinking, Drug use, self harming, gangs, rape, and Incest, there was a lot of movies involving teen exploitation in the 90’s and 00’s.
      I also find it funny how over here in the U.K. these movies are either rated 15 or 18, yet some of those movies deal with characters that are supposed to be younger than that.
      So movies like Cruel Intensions and Poison Ivy may be more mature but they fall low compared to the other movies I listed. But when people think of teen movies they think Mean Girls and Bring It On and stuff like that, but there is this whole other side of teen movies that can get very dark.
      Getting a bit off track here but I find it extremely hypocritical that finding underage people attractive could land you in prison and or on a sex offenders list, yet they make movies about teen exploitation, and Drew Barrymore was 17 (underage mind you) when she was in Poison Ivy and having sex scenes with an actor old enough to be her father. Extremely hypocritical on society’s part really.

    I worked on this film. It was a difficult shoot due to the co-directors constantly arguing. They got so bad that they would put the entire crew on hold while they yell at each other. Some days they would just give up and let the crew wrap for the day. ( not so great for hourly workers) other days they would argue for 8 hours and then angrily order the crew to work a double. The shoot schedule was a mess. Sara G and Tom S are always great people to have on a project. They were a grounding force during the directors pissing matches.

    This is a well made movie with good writing, good cinematography, and good acting. a movie you can watch more than once and still enjoy.
    I like the sequels as well, but not as I like the Poison Ivy original. The sequels were a different kind of thriller\horror.

    I have Posion Ivy 123 and I finally found the soundtrack to this movie too and its a cult classic. This movie put Drew Berrymore back on the map in Hollywood and Drew Berrymore did Scream, Never Been Kissed Charlies Angels, Gun Crazy, 2000 Malbiu Road and Doppleganger, No Where To Hide, and everyone remembered Drew in ET back in 1982. Drew Berrymore has made it as an actress and she has the Hollywood Walk Of Fame and now she has her own Talk Show.

    Ooh, I love "Stripped to Kill'; I'm a fan of Kay Lenz (She's in "Breezy", "Moving Violation", "The Great Scout and Cathouse Thursday", "Fast-Walking", "House"-- I like all that stuff).
    Great info on "Poison Ivy"; I've never been that into the film, but I think it's okay.
    Okay, Katt Shea: in looking her up, I've discovered that she played the character in "Psycho III" who was killed by Norman Bates while she sat on the crapper john, so I have seen her as an actress before. Wow, that was a pretty cold-blooded kill by Bates. I recorded "Psycho III" back in 1988, but it was recorded in pieces since I ran out of room on the original cassette (Memorex!), so that kill got misplaced. Shea's Patsy and Juliette Cummins' (poor gal, doesn't she almost have a porn star-sounding last name?) Red are killed in a slasher film kind of way, but then again, I feel "Psycho III" has more slasher film qualities than the first two films in the series (nothing wrong with that I say, and I think Anthony Perkins did a good job there).
    More to my comment: I re-watched "Psycho III", and discovered that Shea's role as Patsy was bigger than I remembered (I think her moment telling Maureen about here open hotel room door was rather sweet). I've also discovered that some girls are bigger than others.
    I wonder if Drew Barrymore talked to Cheryl Ladd about "Charlie's Angels" while they were on set together. One a part Angel, and another a future Angel (I liked that first "Charlie's Angels" film, but was underwhelmed by the sequel).

      You are missing the point. It's not about literally be like fatal attraction. It's the genre that it spawned. The "from hell" movies. Roommate, friend, neighbor, boss, tenant, husband, nany from hell. Usually featuring a character wrecking someone's life for their own motives.

    I wonder why someone like James Franco gets to make one horrible movie after another which bomb, but a female director makes a good unsuccesful one doesn't get to work for a decade...
    Also, when Hollywood makes a good movie they don't know how to sell it; i guess that's why they prefer making bad ones...

    The locals of LA hated they were filming a movie in their neighborhood?? Where the hell did they thought they were living in?! Sounds like it was one of those spoiled gated neighborhoods where they call the police on anyone walking the street, so of course they would spitefully make noise just to disrupt a movie that's filming for a few days.

    Okay, going through the back catalog here (hence the comment on a year-old video), and I had thought I'd Mandela Effect'd myself into thinking that this movie starred Alicia Silverstone and Cary Elwes, but then realized that's a totally DIFFERENT movie that's somehow exactly the same called "The Crush".

    • @GoodBadFlicks
      @GoodBadFlicks  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Similar but different. Poison Ivy is about a manipulative teenage drifter who moves into a rich house, seduces a grieving husband, and destroys the family. The Crush is about a guy who moves into the guest house of a rich family with a very intellient, disturbed teenager. She proceeds to try and get the guy to fall in love with her and when he doesn't, she goes out of her way to ruin him. Structually similar but very different overall.
