    Great video, as usual Mr Judd! I am the FOH engineer for my church and do some broadcast mixing for another church’s livestream. The way I approach compression is very similar to yours. little bits of compression in multiple places. I like to give 3 or 4 dB of compression for vocal channels. When explaining what compression is, and what it’s for.. I tell people it’s for “decreasing dynamic range.” By that I mean the difference between the quietest parts and loudest parts. A lot of engineers simply think of compression as knocking or taming the tops or loudest parts.. but that isn’t the way see it. I think of compression as bringing UP the quietest parts.. If all you are doing is taming the tops or loud parts.. you’re really using your compressor as a ‘limiter.” While this does achieve a small amount of the goal - decreasing dynamic range - it’s not ideal. After all, you can control the peaks with channel gain. Really what you want to do is use the make up gain to bring up the quiet parts. The tops are going to remain the same whether you use compression or not - as I said, you’re going to use your channel gain to set those where you want ‘em. But when you use 3 dB of attenuation (compression) along with 3db of make-up gain, you’ve effectively decreased dynamic range by 6db. This is what gives consistency to the listener!

    Judd, my fellow INTJ, always delivers. I’m satisfied with my sound now. It can definitely be better. But it’s good for now. I’ve watched two videos of yours on tweaking the settings. Thanks man! When it comes to AV product reviews & tutorials on TH-cam, you’re #1 and no, I’m not being biased. The reason is because you’re not reviewing in an effort to get someone to click on your affiliate links. You do it purely of love and passion. That makes a huge difference. @Eric Parker The main use-case would be to connect your phone via bluetooth to the RODECaster Pro which would allow you to record the sound from your phone - either a call or perhaps music - to the RODECaster. You can also connect your phone with a physical cable to the RODECaster to do the same thing if you prefer a physical connection.

    Hello Curtis! Thank you for your awesome work and presentation. I see you are really advanced at Rodecaster and what is important for me - you got also experience with Zoom P8. If you find time for a reply - would you mind explaining me, what is the difference in usage for SOLO (RCP) button in comparison to ON AIR (P8)? Are they adequate or completely different beasts? The ON AIR is very clear for me - if it's ON, you are recorded, streamed to all, when it's OFF you are not, but you are still heard. And how is that about SOLO button? Thanks in advance for your answer and time taken for answering. One of the best channels on audio there! Priceless and high quality content :)

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The solo button is really just for setting things up before recording. It is basically just a way to mute all the other mics while you set up that one microphone channel that you Soloed. It is not useful for when you're on-air or while recording to take one person out of the mix like on the P8.

    • @audiovid.
      @audiovid. 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@curtisjudd Thank You very much. I have also seen a comment or post somwhere online that the On Air functionality has been brought to the RCP finally. To achieve it you need to push together two buttons: SOLO + MUTE. Is it just a rumor or is it true 🤔? Anyway, thanks for response.

    Apologies for mispeaking on the Asio drivers. Did some further investigation and discovered there are Asio drivers for Windows 10 even with UAC 2.0 support, evidently there is still more instructions going on. That may hold true for other USB interfaces as well. Again my apologies for the incorrect information.

I was surprised to learn that Rode seemed to be playing catch up and that the Bose product was both more robust, feature laden, and easily capable of both live performance in venues as well as live streaming. Hi Curtis. Thanks for a great video on the rodecaster pro updated firmware. For a podcaster that is not a audio engineer this is very helpfull. Would you mind sharing your knowledge and opinion about the slider/volume level for the microfon(the gray slide for each channel). On previous videos you explained that 5 lines down from the top is where Røde says is Zero. In this demonstration you had it all the way up. If you have time I would love your input on two things, #1 Where is the best place to have is while setting your levels, compressor etc. and #2 where is the best place to have it while recording. Curtis Judd thank you for your quick reply. Sounds great that you maybe can get an answer from Røde, I’m curious what they will say. For me as a novice it’s difficult to figure out what the best position for the fader is. Because if, it is put at the top position for recording there is no headroom to play with doing the recording in case someone ends up not being loud enough. So for me with the limited knowledge those to question would be amazing to hear there response to, what position to adjust setting in and what position one should aim for at the beginning of the recording. Thanks again. #rodecaster #røde @røde

      From rode, and thanks to them for always being there and wanting to engage with the community
      Hi Morten,
      Thanks for your email. Unfortunately there's not really an answer to these questions as they will depend on a range of factors, like environment you're recording in, the loudness of the person speaking into the microphone, the type of microphone on the channel, etc. This will come down to testing, and trial and error.
      The sound processing features are quite advanced and there is a decent learning curve with these effects, so I would recommend not using them until you're familiar with each and how to appropriately set them. There are plenty of great, free resources out there (Chris Judd is a great example) on audio processing.

For online, I usually normalize to -16 or -17 LUFS for loudness. I notice those other menu choices already have certain presets applied by default when the "Processing" button is enabled in the "Audio Processing" menu.
