    People called you names for this? GEEZ! This is a FANTASTIC video dude. Your channel is great. Your work is great. Particularly your work on TONEX is incredibly helpful. For the life of me, I can't understand why anyone will call you names even if they like their sounds different than how you like it. No place for that. Love your channel man.

    Hallelujah awesome info, thank you! When testing and shooting out ToneX I was calibrating the reamping chain and landed at - 9dB by ear to get it matching closest to my real amp sound. Nice to get confirmation there was an internal boost going on. Weird to have a digital gain like that implemented in the first place. That should have been something IK would have found alpha or beta testing the units? Thanks to you they did 👍🏻👍🏻

    That's great that you were able to get their attention about this. I don't have any worthy amps to capture, only an 83 Laney TF 700. Your tone models sound great! One thing I'd just love for ToneX to do is be able to set the right output to a clean DI. It can be done in Interface mode, with split USB out, but it's only 44.1 I use 48 on my recordings, so I'm using the toneX Left out to my UAD, then from there to my DAW. Your videos really helped me wrap my head around this ToneX thing, and I'm still impressed by it and the community!

    I bought a Tonex pedal and your video about the input trim was one of the first that I watched. It seemed pretty legit to me so I rolled my input back and everything has been fine. So thank you for passing that info on. Looking forward to updating the firmware and getting back to +-0. People that feel compelled/empowered to talk $**t to someone that is clearly just trying to help are pathetic.

    Hello. This is the first of your videos I've watched. I'm a bass player and don't really use modelers, but I am really getting into bass amp plugins. The Ampeg SVT Suite, specifically, is my hands-down favorite. You said something in this video that was extremely helpful regarding interface input gain. I set my interface up the traditional way. Find the clip point and back off the gain so it's not clipping. The interesting thing is I had trouble getting the amp to run clean without setting the gain into the sim at -10 or -15. Even then the amp would start to break up like a tube does when you hit it hard at the input. The gain being too low going into the sim was causing issues later on. The sim sounds great, but I wanted the amp to react as much like a real SVT as it could. You made excellent points regarding why you set the interface so that the guitar is hitting the sim amp input at the same gain as it would a real amp. I TRIED IT. Turns out, when I set the gain going into the sim at 0bd, not only does the amp sim respond more like a real SVT (virtually identical) it's overall sound is BETTER. It gave me more room on the amps gain/volume and EQ settings as well as better control of the plugins cab and room mics. Even the amp's backside settings, like sag and bias, work better. While I'm not surprised that people whined about your suggestion, (it was JUST A SUGGESTION, not a demand) I don't understand why anyone gets defensive over how they set the gain at the interface. I highly recommend everyone try this if you want to make your amp sim sound as close to the real thing as technically feasible at this point in time. I was really surprised. Anyway, you said you got a bunch of crap for this tip specifically, so I want to say "Thanks for the tip". It was really helpful.

    Jason, thank you so much for this update. Not just for the info, but for working with IK Multimedia to fix the issue. This was a serious problem! It's really amazing to me that you got flack about it because it's so easy to prove you were right -- just switch the ToneX pedal's USB output to Dual (Wet/Dry), and connect them to two tracks in your DAW. Record the wet and dry output to separate tracks, and load the ToneX plugin onto the dry track with the same model that you used in the pedal. I did all this after watching your first video, and found that the pedal (with the old firmware) measures around 8-9db louder than the plugin. So I'm really glad IK Multimedia is fixing the problem, and it's really gratifying to know that my measurements were accurate.
    Is there any ETA for when the new firmware will be released? I'm not seeing it in the IK Product Manager yet.

    I really don’t understand why IK multimedia is now showing “low” on the screen when the input trim is on 0db, on one hand they fixed the issue and on the other hand, they are now literally telling the user: “nope. 0db isn’t enough, you should increase it”… it makes me wonder, any chance they profiled their stock models with a much higher input gain and that’s why they set it that high in the first place? So their profiles will sound better?

    I think I have seen all your videos about this matter.... Firstly thank you for all your efforts of explaining people how this device works. I set my Tonex pedal too 0 db, great that issue has been solved. My question is how do I set my input gain on my Motu M4 for accurracy of the tone models? All the manufacturers of audio interfaces say that you have to raise the input gain until it starts clipping and then back off a little.... This makes no sence to me. Do I have to set it on zero like yours? Great channel. You're the best. I've subscribed

    Jason, this is great work, thank you! I do have a question about your interface input level at minimum. If I have the input knob on my interface all the way counter-clockwise, isn't that "off" so no signal is passing from the interface into (say, for example) Amplitube? I feel like I am missing something in my understanding of this. Thanks again for all you do!

  • @BigDancin
    @BigDancin ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Ok, I get entirely what you are saying and have followed this. But I did a test -- first I plugged my guitar directly into the Hi-Z input of my audio interface (Fireface UFX+), and noted the metered input level of my guitar going in. Then I plugged into the Tonex pedal, and went into the same input with TOTALLY neutral preset in - everything off (amp, cab, eq reset, everything), and checked the level. NOTE that my pedal output volume is at the middle position of 5.0 - not sure how that affects this test). To match the level of my guitar going in alone in this test, AFTER the 1.1.16 update, I need to set my input trim to +7.0. Now, when going straight in to my interface with the same input levels as when I did my test, and playing through the Tonex software, I need to set the input gain level to +6.0 before my captured models (which were captured according to Tonex's level setting requirements with about three orange dots of the "correct" part of the meter lighting) start to sound similar to what they were when I captured them. What does this all mean?!! Jason, your help in understanding this would be vastly appreciated. Should I leave my pedal input trim and Tonex input at +7.0 at all times and just tweak model gain individually from there or set to 0db and have to keep cranking up the input trim on my pedal to get significant signal?

    • @BigDancin
      @BigDancin ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Further to this, I now realize that, yes, my Tonex pedal output volume affected my test. But raised the question, what is unity for Tonex pedal's output volume, ... 10? Setting the master out volume to 10 makes a 0db input trim setting on the pedal roughly match my guitar output when going into my interface directly. But the fact remains, my recent captures unquestionably sound impotent at that level without significant gain added beyond 0db (after the new update). My edge of breakup captures are pure clean, not breaking up at all. Is it something in the way they were captured? I followed all of Tonex's level recommendations when capturing and everything sounded fine in the A/B at that time.

    I think my major issue was that I never made my own captures so I couldn't compare to what the intention of the capture was. It might have sounded fantastic to the person who made the capture but my pedal would make me dismiss a lot of tone models. Now this should get everything on the same page with input trim to 0.

    Maybe this explains why some of my stuff is so noisy, apart from interference issues I know I deal with. I have been going with the Low/hi/ok indicator. 8.6 dB is huge, bit now that I think of it- my rme refers to instrument inputs as -10 and line as +4.

    When are they going to let the tonex software editor make changes real time to pedal so I don't have to keep saving to preset then editing and uploading back to my pedal then check to see if it is ok? Also why can't I play the presets in the tonex software out of my tonex pedal as an audio interface out of the output jacks instead of the headphone jack?

      @@TheFrozenDesert I'm glad I am not the only one who wants these features!! I mean it seems like a no brainer. I mean I can do this with the AxeFX, I can do it with the Boss Katana, I can do it with my Eventide H9 and H90, my small little Positive Grid Spark amp.

    • @vintagetelefly

      You have to update your tonex software first. Then connect your tonex pedal to your computer and move over to Library- at this point tonex software will update your pedal.

    So why would I buy ToneX capture box vs the new Axe I/O ??

    • @JasonSadites
      @JasonSadites  ปีที่แล้ว

      Tonex Capture allows you an easy way to capture Direct captures by taking a tap off of the speaker output of an amp. This new interface cannot do that.

    lol…I was lost the first 3 min into this video. This is so confusing. I appreciate you helping a lot if people but for me and some others, we are still at unpacking the box and hooking it up phase. I have it all set up and hooked up to my monitor speakers. Now I don’t know what the hell to do with it. All the presets really are terrible IMO. Tried tweeking it and got it to sound better. I don’t get IR’s and I don’t get all these package deals you can buy and have tones of favorite artist set ups. Does this mean you buy it and dint have to tweek anything? We need a tone x basic class 101 -for absolute beginners. The reason I bought the tone x was so I could PLAY more and not sit and constantly play with this. Give me a few really good tones and I am happy. What I also don’t get is why people hook the tone x up to a helix or a stomp box? Why? Isn’t the Tone x enough? Confused -do I go out and buy distortion and reverb pedals to add? Thank you for this video -when I learn more about it, I will revisit this so it makes some sort of sense. Right now, I am at the point of selling it and buying a amplifier

      Yes, pressing the active Footswich, then the green LED starts to blinking. Thats the Bypass Mode from the active Preset.

    This is really informative and good content, but honestly you're repeating many points about three or four times. I feel like this video could have been 10min instead of 30min, easily. Anyway, rock on !

      Well, not sure what to tell you. You found the video informative but the only thing you could think of commenting was that you "feel" it could have been shorter. I guess you could always go try and find a video that gives you the same information in the imaginary time limit that you have set as the limit. Hope you find what you are looking for.

    I hope someone can answer this. I received my Tonex pedal on 3/14. What version is the new update? My pedal says version 1.0.4

    • @JasonSadites
      @JasonSadites  ปีที่แล้ว

      Congrats on getting the pedal! The new firmware is 1.0.5. If you go to IK Product Manager and download the latest update for Tonex software and install that, you will be able to use the Tonex software to update the pedal to the new firmware under the Librarian tab. Hope that helps and hope you enjoy :-)

    The bizarre thing is, time shows us over and over that your scientific approach and non biased conclusions provide us all with information that simply can't be argued with, yet there are still idiots out there who will argue. When you tell us about stuff like this I take it as truth, and then you OFFER ways around stumbling blocks, ways that work better for you etc.. How much better could it be!

    Hey, I am using a Clarett 4Pre + Ableton + Amplitube 5 and Tonex VSTs, and I find that I need to add extra gain before the plugins to make them sound right, I have a fixed gain, and then by switching guitars I can get more or less input depending on the pickups like I would do with a real amp, is this something you have experienced? I am asking because you mention a Clarett+ in the video. Thanks.

    man... waaaaaaaayyyyyy too much time spent on that other stuff. You're a public figure- comes with the territory. Say what you've got to say and don't let all that crap live rent free in your head.
    It was pretty apparent the pedal was too hot. I think it was a factually correct statement that you shouldn't have to set it to -13 but due to the defect, it was either do that, or cut your capture send level. This is good news.
