This made me think abt my Norwegian heritage. I live in Canada and I only speak English, but my bestemor and bestefar (just look the meaning up) were Norwegian-speakers. And yet they never taught their kids, including my dad, the language. A few simple phrases and that’s it. They thought their lives would be easier if they could assimilate completely into Canadian culture. And, like… I can understand their reasoning to an extent, but I’ve always felt like not getting to have that language has left a hole in my life, an emptiness where my culture and heritage were supposed to go. Anyway, tusen takk for the video, Aaron, these are always brilliant and fascinating! Subscribed now ❤️
Ah, yes! I am early for Dialect, one of my favourite games! As always, you did it more than justice. I love your perspective on the legacy as an eulogy for the isolation. I usually try to plant a little seed of hope, of survival, with my legacy turns. But I feel like it would be even more momentous to just take that time to say goodbye. I will add A Memory Called Empire to my to read list as well! Considering how much I loved Babel, I am sure this one won't disappoint either. As always, thank you so much for this wonderful essay and for one more anti-colonial book recommendation. There's never enough of that!
Hi Ampersand! Thanks for watching! I really really love how AMCE uses language as a worldbuilding and narrative device, if you liked Babel you'll also get a kick out of it!
This was a great video, I'm really happy I found your channel! Also, Dialect really reminded me of Polari, which is mostly obscure now, but some of the words and phrases made it into the common language.
Great video. Made me think about history with "A Memory Called Empire". Cause how the language is in the book is also hlw it was in real life. The roman empire wasnt just invaded by barbarians. They had their own lands. Their own cultures stories. But in the empires eyes they were not but barbarians. And for the capital being named city. That's Istanbul. Over time the people who lived there started calling it the city. Which made it loose it's old name. Great video keep it up
Do you know any game that have language-forming (sub-)mechanics inspired by Dialect? I always thought that it would gel well with the ethos of belonging outside belonging...
"A Recipe on Kmiydish Paper" might be similar to what you're thinking of. Not quite language mechanics, but discusses the ways a recipe changes and is molded by history and people over time.
Loved A Memory Called Empire! Great to see there’s a game that explores how languages and cultures can be formed and lost. Have you read The Traitor Baru Cormorant? Has very similar themes exploring colonialism.

Thanks for checking out my work! I'm excited to look into your video on Norco, I LOVED that game.
I love Dialect. It's one of those games that you mull over for a couple days after a session.
I've been playing an incredible game of Dialect over the last several months, and AMCE is one of my favorite books of all-time - great video!
Thanks! Knowing your background, I bet your games of Dialect are incredible!
