  • I review the new Siglent SDS1104X-U 100MHz Oscilloscope.
I take a look at its features, and compare the SDS1104X-U to its big sister the SDS1104X-E to see what has been removed to reduce the cost to make it more affordable, what is the difference between the SDS1104X-U and the SDS1104X-E ?
After looking at the menu system and confirming that it still great functions such as serial decoding and FFT included as standard, I then do a bandwidth test to confirm that it meets its 100MHz specification.

Correct, no webserver however a similar features set is available with the free EasyScopeX SW that should be on the CD that comes with the scope.
For many adjustments that use the multifunction control, pressing it pops up a virtual keypad where you can enter values directly like for Holdoff instead of endlessly turning the encoder. Very useful when large value changes are required.
Reference Position in the Utility menu is something you need play with more where you can fix the Horizontal 0s trigger position for it not to move off the display when the timebase is magnified. A similar feature is available for Vertical position.
Over the next few weeks/months these DSO's should become more widely available.
Overall a good quick overview of the capability of the X-U, thanks Defpom.

The 1104X-E has two 1Gs/s A/D-converters (CH1 & 2 for #1, CH 3 & 4 for # 2), while the X-U has only one. Also the bode plot function in X-E is not present in the X-U. Thanks for your informative video about this subject.

I would like to know how the 4 channels look like working, and if having only 1 GSa/s, how it affects the quality of the signal, I think you didn't show this in your video and it would be interesting for those who want to buy a new Oscilloscope.
Additionally, do you know if this also connects to the network? to be able to see the signal through the Browser?
    Thank you very much!

It seems the 1104s do not come with an external trigger BNC port ;like the 2 channel scopes do. Is that because they assume you can use one of the 4 channels for an external trigger????? Thoughts???

Do you think this would work well for automotive? My main question is: If I'm zoomed out for a slow roll so I can get a long capture, I believe it will only show data at a lower resolution. But while viewing that capture, am I able to zoom into wave form and drill down to the finer detail?, or does it only capture what is on the screen?
For example an automotive "PICO scope can record a rolling capture, and then you can still zoom into your recording (like google maps) and all the finer detail will still be there, even though it could not be viewed on screen at the time of your recording.
So in other words, can you adjust resolution after the fact? or would I have to go back and change my settings to get the capture I want on screen first, because your rolling recording is only acting as a screenshot, and not a fully dynamic capture at the finest detail, no matter what is being shown on the display?
For example, if I had it set for a slow roll so I can crank the engine for 10 or 20 seconds, and then go back and look at the capture. The engine RPM would be around, lets say 400rpm, so you would get several injector spikes firing on your capture. But the duration of each injection is only about 5ms, so would I be able to look at my capture and change the time frame, and zoom down into that injection waveform? Or would my capture only show the initial spikes that were recorded at a slower rolling time frame?
I know while viewing live data, you can change the time frame and zoom into that injection waveform, but I just don't know if you can do it with a capture? This is important because many times you need to zoom out and see when your injectors are firing, but in the same capture you need to zoom in to the waveform of a specific injection event- for example if the car is only malfunctioning intermittently. It would be hard to capture that one malfunctioning event with a trigger; but it's easy to catch it on a rolling capture that records everything-- I just don't know if it has the ability to then zoom down into the 5ms waveform itself, if your recording was on a 10 sec capture.
I hope I was clear on what I'm asking. lol..

Amazon in the U.S. has the "E" for $450 and the "U" for $400 at the time of this post, though it claims 1-2 months shipping on the "U" and the listing doesn't appear on Amazon's Siglent store page. A quick search suggest these prices are typical, though, so your choice might depend upon whether you think the extra ADC (multi-channel sample speed), time resolution, and option to buy the MSO, function gen., USB function generator, or web control upgrades are worth US$50.
The optional packages are pretty expensive (too expensive, IMO) and can triple the price of the scope, but they may be critical to a current or future application. If you need Bode plots, for example, then you'll have to buy a compatible Siglent function gen. While the option to upgrade is nice, keep in mind that such features may become standard on future products at a similar price.
If I assume that I will not be buying the upgrades, the extra $50 is buying me an extra ADC to improve multi-channel bandwidth plus slightly better time resolution and vertical range. If I needed specific optional features, I'd first look at scopes that include them out of the box.
What would make my decision easier is if one of these scope went on sale.
Any digital bench scope should include basic decoding as a standard feature, period. If I have to pay extra to get serial or I2C decoding, I'll pass.

The 200mhz hack and 2 ADCs with extra options make the extra 50 bucks look like nothing. The choice of the 1104x-e is a no-brainer unless budget it very strict. I've been able to read frequency out to 325MHZ with the 1104x-e with the software frequency counter. The hack turns it into a 1204x-e. If you need lots of scopes for an educational setting then the 1104x-u would make more sense. For a hobbyist, just get the x-e. They made the X-E incredibly easy to hack intentionally for the hobbyist. They are fully aware that corporations and institutions wont hack it for any reason (they prefer to keep warranties in tact).

Looks nice. I think the performance of Siglent products is amazing, better than Rigol at the price point. I still think the build quality isn’t quite there they still seem to suffer from wobbly knob syndrome. I agree very well featured. Amazing for the price. The days of HP and Tektronix are numbered.

It depends, usually my older Siglent SDS2302 which is fully optioned with MSO logic analyser etc, but as I have 3 scopes on my shelf they are all suited to different things, the Keysight 1102G is faster, and has slightly different serial decoding and is better in some cases depending on the deciding required, then I have my 4 channel Siglent, obviously for the 4 channels.

Yes it is possible, but than you need to think in advance. For instance sometimes I need to catch some rare event, finally I catch it and than it cross my mind that it will be good to save it in csv, but scope was set to high sample rate. Than I need to repeat complete process and catch this signal again, with reduced sample rate, but maybe I will loose to much time if event is rare. Keysight scope of similar entry level class has option to reduce sampling rate during export to csv. If I remember well there is optios something like 2 000 / 20 000 / full samples, or I can enter number how much samples I want in csv file, this is very usable.
