I have two bottles, 1) Mr. Super Clear UV Cut MATT (B523Y gray long bottle), and then 2) Mr. Hobby Premium Topcoat FLAT (B603 Turquoise short bottle). Both give dull appearance visually, but the MATT has a little bit of sanded physical feeling and the FLAT is perfectly smooth physically. I'm not sure if this is the reason why the FLAT is more durable against finger nail scratch since a rougher texture on MATT gives your finger nail more resistance, means more likely to break off the dried mass. Both gets scratched off if you scratch hard enough. B523Y smells like any color spray bottle out there, B603 smells like Invisible Glass (those detergent that you use to clean car windows)
As far as I've discovered by researching the matt has a grainy feel to the touch but flat feels more flat, like not any texture. For painting with pastels and pencils on dolls it might work better a little texture, but for vinyl heads it might crack more over time if you are not careful. That's what I found out!
So in terms of dolls (resin, vinyl, pvc) we use UV Cut FLAT. MATTE has a tendency to crack over time, especially on vinyl which can bend when putting on wigs, changing eyes etc. But I just recently found out they have discontinued their UV Cut Flat and made UV Cut Matte. I’d love if you did a video about if they’re the same thing and they’ve just changed the name, or not.
The UV Cut FLAT looks and feels a tad bit smoother than the old non-UV Cut MATT By the way, the Super Smooth Clear Flat (tall can, light blue label) produces an even smoother surface than the UV Cut FLAT
If you’ve work with Japanese and Chinese you will know even experienced product developer they might not be able to handle English translation on product branding and documentation effectively. I read moderate Japanese, and used Mr Hobby paints for over 30 years. I can feel the only difference between them is the UV cut capability, since the products were released by different generations of product manager, thus this is common to have their English name to be translated differently
I have Mr. Super Clear (MSC). I am painting my very first model figure. It's a Warhammer figure that I bought off eBay. I don't know if it's plastic or resin. It had a grainy look to it when I purchased it so I think it could be resin but again not sure. I hadn't read anything about painting the figure but I do 1/6 scale figure face up painting. So I have used MSC many times. I gave my figure a couple of very light coats to help the paints adhere because that's what I have always done. Then I read some where that you shouldn't use MSC on gaming figures. So that brought me here to your video. I have the figure painted now & want to seal it because besides using the acrylic paints (The Army Painter gaming paints & some watered down metallic acrylic craft paints) I used some watercolor pencils which I already had. I sharped a white pencil very sharp to paint the tiny teeth. I don't want to use a paint on sealer because the water color might get muddy. I haven't found much options at the Hobby Store. I even checked Walmart. In the past, I know that MSC is more matte than any other matte paints that I have purchased from my Hobby Store & Walmart or Home Depot. I'm on a time crunch now as this is a surprise birthday gift. I just don't know what to do. I am tempted to just use what I have on hand. I may try a very light coat to see what happens. Since I used watercolor I feel like it's better to seal it than to not seal it.
It is always better to seal it, but definitely test it on something else before hand. Flat or matte coats "typically" don't have issues on acrylics and such, the gloss ones you have to be very careful with. Again always test on something you use for that sort of thing before going to your special project. Good luck!
Just to reiterate; even if you don't read Japanese it's easy to see that the symbols on the flat can and matt can are the same identical four symbols in *bold* .I've wondered about this before but never bothered to look at the Japanese symbols.
As for me: FLAT is actually flat, and MATT ruined my doll😢 I don't know why, but for the moment I can't find my fav Mr. Super Clear UV Cut FLAT in a whole Europe... So I'd better spent more time without Clear at all..
nice vid, sir. Can I ask, what oil based enamel matte spray would you recommend that is a duller than Rustoleum's painters touch 2x ultra cover matter clear but not entirely flat.either?
I don't know of anything like that. If you have access to an airbrush, Alclad makes some of their clear coats in oil base, one I really like is called Clear Cote Light Sheen which is a matte but with just the hint of sheen, way less than a semi gloss.
I'm concerning about this, I just planned to buy a top coat but doesn't know what to choose between the Mr. Hobby premium Topcoat FLAT and Mr. Super clear MATT AND Mr. Super smooth MATT, even the UV topcoat too, I'm kinda confused Should I use multiple topcoat? Or combined/mixed all of those thing together and spray it on? Or spraying it layers upon layers? I also had 2 shining gold gunpla kits (high grade RX-0 Gundam 03 Unicorn Phenex and MGEX Strike Freedom) And I'm concerning if I could put some gloss topcoat on the Shining Gold? Should I do it?
All very good questions, our comments in our videos are based off of the companies websites and descriptions. The best thing to do is try on a project you don't care about, this is to see how the paint reacts to topcoat. Thank you for sharing. All the matts and flats they produce can be overwhelming!

Thank you. Feedback from fellow modelers is one of the goals of our TH-cam channel.
