This is true. Jordan is very good at doing projects, enjoys doing projects and has a high threshold for frustration. I do not enjoy projects and get frustrated quickly. No boat ownership for me.

Though job the mast steps .
      You ended the video before
I could see what wood you used .
Im sure the replacement is long done by the time you read this.
I have a leaky Teaky my mast steps are solid teak and not glassed or painted and are 44 years Most of the time wet and in perfect condition just food for thought.
I have replace other rotted wood
On my boat supports and parts of the Bowsprit with ipe wood . If your not Familiar with it it's Brazilian walnut it one of the hardest strongest wood on the planet does not float and is Guaranteed for 75 years without rot.

Jordan, you can use white distilled vinegar to rub on your hands after working with fiberglass and it’ll remove the itch. The vinegar dilutes the glass and stops the itch in your skin. Then you can just wash with cold soap and water to remove the smell. It’s the best solution that I found to remove the itch from fiberglass.

I uest to work with fibreglass. Always have a cold shower first .a hot shower opens the pores and allows the strands to get in .cold washes them off first

Not only do PS make exceptional boats, but their customer service is absolutely amazing. It's definitely nice to be anchored up, basically, in the backyard of PS. Jordan, at least you discovered the mast step issues while docked and not on passage in open waters. Cheers and safe travels.

When you run out of fuel on these heaters you have to re prime the fuel right up to the heater ie take off the little tube and suck the diesel through (a little bit of diesel in the mouth is not that bad though you might want to read the story about “young Ethelred” first). The other thing you have to do after a few failed starts is pull out the fuses for a few seconds to reset internal controller. I’ve run mine out a couple of times so have learned not to as I have to unbolt my heater to get to the fuel tube. My heater wasn’t starting one week end so I bought a whole new heater as a spare, especially as my heater is integrated into the function of the boat (space heating, water heating, drying cupboard, drying out the heads after showers, and now heating water for my new washing machine (Costway brand 43cmx43cmx74cm 3.5kg load I found a place under a seat cushion over the keel). It’s no fun being cold.)

These are a few anti-corrosion tips I've picked up along the way from working on high rise buildings and pumping stations in marine environments. I don't know if any of these tips would be useful on a boat (except for passivation).
Passivate stainless steel to keep it from bleeding rust. The embedded ferrous molecules from the fab shop is what makes ss bleed rust.
Use mylar film or high impact plastic shims to keep dissimilar metals apart.
Use phenolic washers and sleeves with stainless steel bolts to keep the bolts from contacting the bolted material.
Isolate type 304 stainless from 316 stainless in a marine environment.
For some projects in harsh environments like chemical plants, the job specs called for electroless nickel plated bolts, nuts and washers. It keeps the threads from galling together over time.

  • @Redriver6464
    @Redriver6464 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Hi Jordan, in cases of stuck fasteners especially with a slotted pan head the fastest and easiest way to remove them is drill the head out. Use a bit that is fairly close to the threaded size, even if you have to guess that’s okay. Start small and keep increasing bit size til the head pops off. Then remove the plate and use vice grips on the leftover over threads to remove. Replace fasteners with new that ARE NOT slotted (flat head sucks). Hope this helps

I hope you thought to make a teflon gasket to slip between the SS plate and the Aluminum mast step. Of course by now you've probably already stepped the mast. Tip. When grinding in an enclosed space, if the vacuum has a decent filter in it, leave the vacuum running. It will really help filter the fine dust particles out of the air as you work.

The mast step on my Tayana 37 was also rotted very similar to yours.
The entire mast had actually dropped a few inches and caused my rigging to loosen.
I ended up repairing it on anchor by using bottle jacks to raise the mast 6 inches off the step so I could dig out the old block the same way you did.

You probably have the Espar heating running by now but I had a similar issue after I bought my V-42. If the heater has a number of failed starts it trips a circuit that requires a special reset button. As I remember the manual doesn't tell you where that button is. In my case the red button was laced into the main cable harness. You unwrap that harness and you may find it. That will allow it try the start sequence again. It is also a good idea to run it on kerosine once in a while which helps keep the burner screen clean.

It was so bad I went out into my Garage an got a dust mask just to finish watching you.. Drilling 3/4 holes in that block of wood would have been easier, then pry the bugger out.. Hope you got the right height for the step . Mast stanshines would be loose or tight NP you got this ~~ Carry-on

I recommend..after 24 years in the US Navy...try some simple Walgreens wintergreen oil on the stuck bolts. When you re-install use axle grease on the threads. PB Blaster gives me a headache ..the smell is nasty. After seeing the carbon Steel helicoils...yep the only way to to just rip it all out

My thought is that in places where wood could possibly get an intrusion of water, use plastic wood like they make for outdoor decks on houses.

Might want to consider a wood/rubber composite solid product for your new block (Trex) or a tropical hardwood (Ipe) that wont rot or at least wont rot while you guys own it.

I'm really surprised the Impact screw driver didn't get those loose. As a professional Mechanic that's one of the last tools I go for before I just start drilling the bolt out...

Hmm... I think I remember offering you an incredible deal on a brand new Allures Yachting 40.9, which, as I was saying, it would be up to date design and equipment that you could afford... Love watching you prove my point weekly... Its my job to know these things because I do not BS people about the best thing for them, rather than what those, in my opinion, used car SALESMEN did to you... You know who I am talking about... Remember, I was guiding you for a future plus... 😉👍

Omg Jordan, upgrade to a proper respirator!! I’m grinding my interior right now to prep for a settee rebuild and can relate to the plastic tarp and being covered in dust, but man let me tell you, a tyvex suit and a respirator are making all the difference in the world!

There are triangular sanding pads for oscillating tools that work well at smoothing areas without throwing a lot of dust or gouging the underlying material. So great for spot sanding.

I'm glad you showed that Blaster stuff. I was thinking of getting that for a corroded valve on my water pipe, that's keeping me from installing a bidet.

After the electric drill those reciprocating multitools are one of the most useful power tools ever produced.
Heat and quench with release oil, with slot head screws repeat... allow time you need the max. width and thickness. Very old screws are notorious for having fine slots .. ive even had to oil grind blades down so they will fit.

It appears to me that Pacific Seacraft could have provided more support in the repair of the engineering issue, out of warranty or not. Wish you had bonus footage of Jordan's DIY skills for this project.
