    I can't see how this is any easier than using the usual selection tools, because the real challenge is to get the correct details and this is where things get difficult. But thank you very much for introducing me to this fine method, riberg ☺

      So glad to hear that! I haven’t been doing any of this for a long time because I’ve been losing my vision and it’s awful hard to do digital editing when you can’t see what you’re doing! So I guess I’ll just have to enjoy digital editing vicariously through you, if that’s OK…

    Richard, thanks so much for this new technique to extract objects. I cannot believe that I've been wasting my precious time and energy using the Freehand Selection, Magic Wand and Smart Selection Brush extraction tools all of this time. I'm so in love with your channel.

    I found this video to be very helpful. I agree that it was a bit rushed but you had a lot of ground to cover. I just hit the pause button after every step and took notes. It also helped to have my Paint shop program running with a photo selected. That way I could pause the video and apply your directions to my stuff. Well done.

    Hi!... I think this a very good tutorial but I got a problem with. I can't understand what did you do with history palet. When I do click in the point you did it nothing happens, I mean, it doesn't turn in green, as I can see in the video. And in the minute 2:44 you displayed the selection menu but it's not possible to see what option you choose and you say something like (nana) or none... so, from that point, all turns confused for me. I have PSS X4, maybe there's some little differences with X2. don't know... but, finally I couldn't get that accurated mask you show in the video. What I'm doing wrong? Thanks in advance.

    • @riberg
      @riberg  11 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are fine - it's me who is confusing everyone. Here is an explanation I've sent to others with the same problem ...
      The history palette in the video was put in to show what the selection looks like after doing all of the painstaking painting. It's not part of the process and has confused a lot of people. Forget the History Palette and just work with the rest of the video or go to the page on my website or ask if you've got any more questions. Sorry for the confusion!
      I will also make a new video to complement that one.
      Rich

      riberg thanks so much..... I'll try it again ignoring History palette =). These are my first steps in X4 , though I've always used Paint Shop Pro in older versions (I love number 9). I hope to learn these new features, I'm very interesting on. Sorry about my english, I'm Spanish speaker. Greetings from México.

    Hello Richard,
    I think this tutorial is useful, but unfortunately fail to complete it. At 3:03 minutes you made left-click on the last box (Edit Selection) from "History" and then all the boxes were marked in yellow.
    Unfortunately after I did the exact same steps I have not managed to passed away this step because the boxes were not marked with yellow, resulting in the selection obtained by you at3:07
    Please can you explain better step in the range 3:03 and 3:07 because when I left I click on "Edit Selection" (in History / last box), boxes above are not marked with yellow, and thus not making selection obtained from 3:07
    Mention that I using Corel PaintShop Pro X6.
    Thank you very much.

      Liviu - I used the History Palette so I wouldn't have to go back and re-do things within the video. I created the good selection before starting the tutorial and when I needed it in the video I just went to the history palette.
      I thought, at the time, that it was a brilliant idea and I managed to confuse a lot of people. Sorry for that!

      ***** The one thing I've learned with all of the Photo Editors is that there are multiple paths to the same destination which means there really isn't a right or wrong way to do anything. If you really like that method then that's the one for you. I'll stick to the built in Edit Selection because it's an easy one step method. And it is great that you got back to me on this - well done.

  • @riberg
    @riberg  14 ปีที่แล้ว

    @johnnyone123 I had actually painted the sax player before I started recording the tutorial. The selection I made on the video was very rough and just done to give you an overview of how the technique works. When that was done I just went back in time in the History Palette to the precise painting.
    Does that help ...?

    Method loses a lot of detail around the edges on things like a closeup of a bird, where there are lots of little thin protrusions of feather here and there, unless you take it down to the pixel level and have a very steady hand and absolute control of your mouse. Isn't there ANY way to get close and have PSP autocorrect or autofill somehow to a more detailed fill in for what we've tried to select, to avoid this?

    *** Just seen oo your reply 8 years ago. For the below issue, understand now :)
    OK Issue:
    1. after I click on Select None (CTRL+D)
    2. I go to the "magic tool" history in palette
    3. I click on the eye icon for Undo/Redo for Edit Selection but it completely gets rid of the selection that was initially made and nothing is highlighted.
    What am I missing? I am using paintshop pro 2018.
    Boy if this works ... its a true blessing :)

      Unfortunately when I included the history palette unless original video it’s screwed up so many different people. I accept responsibility for that dumb move. What you’re better off doing is choosing edit selection make your selection and then choose edit select that’ll give you your selection the way you want it with the marching ants. It is a really good technique and I managed to confuse a whole bunch of people by trying to make it more than it was. Good luck and if that doesn’t work let me know and we will figure it out.

      Glad you liked it - it's a fabulous method. As for selecting hair it can be a real problem. Take a look at the PaintShop Hair Tinting tutorial. Coloring hair is selecting intensive and it may give you a direction. Just remember it's almost impossible to get all of the little strays ...

    When you go to the HISTORY , when you select Edit Selection, I see a orange X or symbol , how was that done, When I get to history , I see what I need , but when I click I don't get or can't get the selection you get in the history list , you don't seem to do much, but you have the little thinking circle as id its processing something, HOw is that done. that part is not explained, because all I have is the ability to click in the list , but it puts a view eye oe ut takes it away , I don't know how to select the way you did.

    • @riberg
      @riberg  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +AsFewFalseThingsAsPossible This is not particularly difficult. Add a new layer above the portrait and then draw a black (or whatever color you want) to transparent gradient from the middle of the face. After you're done you can change the layer opacity and/or play around with the layer blend modes to get the look you want. Let me know if you have any more questions ...!

    I have been using this method for a while. You can also 'undo' a mistake by simply clicking and holding down the right mouse button, rather than switching back to your black and white swatches. So much easier. What I really want to know, is how I can save the selection so that I can re-use it to paste into other images? Is there a way I can do this?

    • @riberg
      @riberg  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the comment. It does seem like it would be much easier to do it your way! As for your question you can save a selection to an alpha channel, I was working on a tutorial for that but my eyes have been deteriorating to the point that it’s hard for me to see the final little bits and pieces in the program. Be that as it may, you can save a selection and you can load it as selection. The way to do it is go to the selection menu and scroll down to save selection. I’m not at my computer right now, I am on my iPad but under the select menu there is a option to load and save selections. Click on that and you’ll find a few more options. You can save your selection to an alpha channel or save it to disk or load from disk or the alpha channel. Before you ask me what an alpha channel is, be darned if I know! It seems to be where they store selections, Hope this helps!

    • @kezzakat
      @kezzakat 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@riberg thank you for your reply. Sorry about your eyes. I found a page that gave some steps and direction on saving to either the alpha channel or load to disk but I cannot make it work, as I have a different view in the drop down boxes so cannot follow the direction. I really need to find a tutorial that explains how to do this, as it is the one thing that really perplexes me, and something that I need to learn. I am using Paint Shop Pro X4. I can't seem to find any tutorial on this.

      There is a Background Eraser living with the Eraser tool, right? Select the Background Eraser and carefully go around the outside of the image, keeping the centre of the brush in the area you want to erase. If the centre of the Background Eraser touches the image it will erase that as well.

      I already watched it but there you don't use it there. And I'm working with a face and curly hair, so it would be very difficult to do it manuel. In the first video you made a rough selection and the program somehow made it precise. It's that, that I'm interested in.

    • @riberg
      @riberg  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Vera Kraamwinkel The precise selection was done by zooming in very close and using a small brush size. It's simply grunt work. I did that in the first video but didn't show it on the video. Sorry to say - you have to be careful and work at a high zoom level.

      I had a vintage image of a ships anchor with flowers around it. It had a grungy tan beige background that I wanted to remove. All went well until I got to the bottom. About half of one arm of the anchor was outside of the selection area. I finally just selected that area, promoted it to a layer, used the eraser, and then merged the anchor and it's missing arm into one image. It worked but not what I was wanting to do. Also for some reason, I was getting quite a few small areas where there were "holes". I managed to fill them in. Being a vintage image it still needs a lot of tweaking to make it really look like I want it to. I just can't find any good tuts for Paint Shop Pro 9. I just switched from my old (2) after many years because it wouldn't work with Windows 10. So far I wish I had 2 back.

      X9 is really good and a lot faster that 2. The technique works fine so it must be my explanation. When you're using the brush with Edit Selection it's easy to paint wherever you want,

    Do you have a friend in New Zealand? He asked the same question yesterday - the first time anyone asked about the History palette and today you asked the same question.
    History palette has nothing to do with the procedure. I did the selection perfectly before starting the video, demonstrated how to use the tools and then went back in history to the state with the perfect selection so we could go from there. Does that answer your question?
    Rich

  • @riberg
    @riberg  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    If I understand the question then this is what you do. Make the selection and then click Edit Selection to get the marching ants. Go to Edit > Copy, move to the other document or create a new one and then Edit > Paste As New Layer. This will put your selection on its own raster layer.

    Oops - so sorry about that! The history palette in the video was put in to show what the selection looks like after doing all of the painstaking painting. It's not part of the process and has confused a lot of people.
    Forget the History Palette and just work with the rest of the video or go to the page on my website or ask if you've got any more questions. Sorry for the confusion!

    Oops - sorry - I think I messed this up. I only used the History to go back to a time when I did a perfect selection rather than a rough one like in the video. You won't use the History state so ignore that part - go forward to time 3:30 and work from there. If you've got any other questions let me know.
    Rich

  • @riberg
    @riberg  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hmmm - well make sure that White is your foreground color to start off. When you choose Edit Selection a new layer is added which is called Selection and it is Black. Now get the Paint Brush and start painting where you want the selection to be - it should be filling in with the red color.
    That should work - if not let me know or check out my site at the-graphics-tablet com Paint Shop Pro and find the written tutorial for this.

      Goldwing Road Riders Sheesh - sorry it took so long to reply to you. PSP 7.0 is an old version from years ago. It may be a good idea to consider an upgrade to X7. Corel has some pretty good deals going on now. The new version is faster, more stable and includes better adjustments. I suspect you will really like the new version and there are lots of tutorials to help you master the program. If you've ever got any questions just get back to me here or through the contact page on my site.

    Thanks for your effort, but your audio is weak. I could hardly hear your voice and I had the audio at full blast. The tools are too small (not your fault) that it is difficult to see where on the menu you select them. Also you move too fast between the tools. Slower, larger and louder would be perfect.

    *He's not demonstrating how to do it*
    He's done all the work previously, where he displays the history palette he implies that is all you need to do, for one reason or another he has omitted to tell you he's going back to 'the beginning' but it's not where the video started, it's where he'd almost finished doing it.

    you speak so fast in some parts of your video allot of your words just blend into one work and i have a hard time understanding what you are saying which i find extremely unpleasant to listen to, other parts your talking slow and clearly and i can tell what your saying just fine, that is not unpleasant to listen to.

      +John van der Linden Hey John - perhaps for an experienced Paint Shop Pro user these are not complex objects but for many, many people, especially new Paint Shoppers, this kind of extraction is very challenging. If this procedure is "easy" as you said then maybe you could do a video demonstrating how to extract a difficult object, such as hair.

    I can't see how this is any easier than using the usual selection tools, because the real challenge is to get the correct details and this is where things get difficult. But thank you very much for introducing me to this fine method, riberg ☺
