Sando is a vail legend. He has such a unique style and is a super cool and down to earth dude. He taught me how to snowboard and mountain board. Dude is living a great life. If youre in Vail and looking for private lessons, ask around for Sando, you wont regret it
Last winter 22-23 me and my best friend Gavin took a trip to Vail. With 5 years of snowboard instructing on the east coast, we were confident in only what we knew. 2 riding days in and we were in good shape. With a guide on the mtn with us we explored our second to last day with our guide named Nick. After incrementally riding harder terrain, tomorrow gavin and I were on our own for a day. Knowing this I youtubed "vail Snowboarding" for some inspiration. Gavin and I were amazed at Sando"s hot feet. When we see Nick we ask him if we knows Sando. He said yes. Meeting Sando and riding with him is an experience i will never forget. At the time he was 59 compared to both of us being 20. Let me tell you, Sando smoked us i mean look at his videos. Hearing his stories and learning some things from him was a stepping stone for me. Thanks for reading. -Dukosaxony
Some of the sickest riding I have ever seen! I really like how low and closed you keep your downhill shoulder in your toe side turns. I spent a lot of time last year working on 180 transitions on groomers you are throwing them on what looks to be pretty steep ungroomed stuff. Awesome!
TheTelemarc, I actually was schooled with and by Telemarc skiers for ski partrol back in the mid 80's. AND I have been on several teams with tele bros. My current riding is basically tele boarding. Have not used the back binding much for quite some time. Hey, 6 years later.....Thanks for the compliments!!
It was a dream come true for me to see a woman ride with a style so similar to mine! I would love to know if you and your posse of rippin' mamma's, will ever be back on these slopes. It would be an honor to ride with you and yours.
Sando I would really appreciate it! I dont have any good video of myself, however I am hoping to get a hold of a camera with decent zoom for this season. I taught for the winter of 2005 and started back last season. I am hoping to do a couple aasi clinics this season.
Hey Sando, really digging these vids and wonder why there aren't more like these available. Most lessons are totally freestyle or very specialized freeride carving. Most riders like to mix the two together a bit and your style seems more like that. Any new footage from this winter?
Max, so sorry for 7 years to reply! I finally am "valid" on TH-cam :D Times have changed since you posted this. There is a strong move back towards carving and mixing it with spins !!!!
Thanks for the heads up. I am in the eastern division. I hope to relocate west someday. Ive been fortunate enough to ride Utah and Idaho the past 2 seasons. Ive been watching a lot of videos trying to pick up on some things to work on this season. I like in your other video how you drag your downhill hand in some of your carved toeside turns. It looks like you raise and move your trailing arm opposite of the turn. It seems like this really keeps your shoulders square with the pitch.
Hey there.... It's all been said before but... OMG! Style, flow and creativity! It's all there man! Anyway, I have a question, At 1:48 - 2:25.... I've been learning that at my indoor slope (year round boarding!) What's that called??? I was told it's a 180 hardway???
Thanks Rumble! I will check out the video and see what I am doing then. I am not aware of anything I do that has a name, but I think you are referring to the blindside flat spin to high edge angle switch heel side carve? LOL!!!
Ooops! completely wrong on that one. It is called "toe to toe". There is a "heel to heel" also, but it is WAY sketchy and the blindside spin I eluded to above, is the spin needed to get heel to heel. Learn that one slowly, or there are dues to pay!!!
Dues indeed! I crashed the other week and now have whiplash! Ouch... anyway, I'll still ride just taking it easy for a while... I can do them toe to toe but our slope doesn't have great snow and I think that would help... A LOT!
Hey Sando, I forgot to ask you about getting those adhesive strips for your back foot. I'll be at vail today if there's anyway I can get them from ya. (I took your class yesterday)
Chad!! So sorry I just saw this. And I reckon neither one of us got any more riding in at Vail after we did that class :( I got to ride my property till May, with friends and all alone most times. My glade is not terribly steep, but it is MINE!!!! I hope you see this and we can get er done for ya, before the next snow flies.....
Hey Kelly!!!! OMG I am definitely better with Snowboarding than I am with setting up an account on Blahtube. I hope you don't judge me on my web savvy LOL!!! So sorry it took so long to reply, I almost gave up. If you wish, you can send me a "friend request" on Facebook. OR, if you wish i will just give you my Ph #....I would love to help you and change your riding for the better. I look forward to hearing from you....

There is NO cell phone service or internet where I live, and my friends who have been there have a problem finding it again. I moved up to High Camp to have the freedom to not give a rats booty what happens in the rest of the world, and it has been so amazing for my spirit. If we can get you proficient on your board, I will host ya and some friends on a day of Sando's Glade freshy pow runs. I look forward to the day you can rip powder too!!! I have my own private mountain side and it is sweet low angle ( NO Avalanche) gladed terrain. Should be within your skill set within this season if we get some dayz on snow.....?
Gabrel, there are 4 things a snowboard can do. It can be TILTed on toe or heel edge, it can be PRESSUREd to bend tip to tail, it can be TWISTed or TORQUEd with one foot pressing to toe edge and the other to heel. Or it can be PIVOTed. Of these four board performance concepts, TILT is used the most to turn or brake, by the average rider. The first drill is to isolate the PIVOT performance. If you can keep a rythym of pivot only, at first sitting completely still on a flat surface, then take it to a very slight incline, which is what I am doing here. Use a VERY Green run or even a flat catwalk to start. This drill is not as easy as it looks. The goal is to be able to turn or pivot the board anytime you wish, not just when you are able to unlock your upper body from being all twisted. I don't know if you see it, but I lead with my front hand, and time my arm leverage to be on the side which I am turning on. Most people drag their back hand and loose the ability to round both turns and be symmetrical on heel and toe.
If you look from 1:12 to 1:22 I use only Pivot and then Twist. Just after, I blend the two together, to attempt symmetrical and round heel and toe turns. It is SO F'n hard to do!! It takes focus on arm movements and their timing, and minimizing shoulder rotation, by focusing your eyes on a fixed object straight in front of you. Keep your chin up and give er a try. I would love to see some video of how it goes for you, if you wish me to do some movement analysis for ya?
Is there any way you could repost "Big Vail Fun - Snowboarding with Sando" as it's been blocked. Just find some other kitchy surf music!!! It was such a cool piece of riding!
Thanks David!! Yeah, that music was pretty cool and Snowfun4you is too good with editing and matching tunes with riding. I will look and see if I can get er back......
So sorry it took 7 years to reply!! I am +15 or +12 with -3 or -6 on the back foot. No matter which angle you are at on the "back" foot, merely shift your hip above that foot and use femoral rotation for your steering mechanism.
Hey Sando, very nice video! May I ask you what board are u using? I am an intermediate using a custom X so far, but with aging (43) I get tired quite quickly since the stiffness of the board, would you recommend a softer board for allround riding or is just a matter of practice? I ride 7-10 days a year, I was an hard booter (that is why a stiff board also for softies), then moved to softies almost 10 years ago, I like carving but would like to do some triks as well as the ones u show here.
So sorry it took all these years Edoardo. I ride several boards including the old Burton Floaters, and Canyons in 159cm up to 181cm. I am now also using the Custom X and it sounds like the stick YOU should be on. It is stiff at first, but you can break it in by bending it at home on carpet. Then, it will be soft enough. I hope I have been some kind of help?
(cont) as well as enabling you to really close off your downhill shoulder. I did a proform on a gopro camera. I would really appreciate some feedback on my riding once I get some decent video.

Nice practice drill at the start of the movie for moving the feet !
Thanks Pep!!! I am finally able to comment 8 years later :o It is a drill that isolates Pivot in the board with little or no tilting or edgeing.
