  • Quicker and Easier ways to create the Twisted part in FreeCAD. Recently a article was written for Hackaday mentioning the original video in light of how freeCAD can easily deal with such challenges. Unfortunately there were a handful of the usual narrow minded comments regarding FreeCAD. So here's an up-to-date video to show that there is more than one way to skin a cat!

    What I did is: Select the 3 surfaces and click "Parametric Solid" to make a shell, then offset the shell. But when you view the offset from the end, you see that it's not symmetric, so I offseted it the other way as well and Unioned them together.

    I think it might be better to start with a sketch on surface on a cylinder, to get the guide rails. That would let you keep the twisted section a constant width.

    Thats amazing! Thank you for the tutorial! I'm kinda new to FreeCAD and it was a real pain when I tried to perform the same in Curves workbench. To have 'Blend curve' in Surface workbench I was needed to update to version 0.21.0, but its worth it. Thanks again!

    Good to revisit this and show how it can be done easier. I tried to do it using the Helix tool or using Additive Loft. But it looks totally unnatural. Because the straight part suddenly twists without the normally looking curve. I think your methods work best at this moment.

    • @H34...
      @H34... ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Loft has an option to blend/curve transition between profiles, as long as you use more than 2 profiles. Id personally try with 3/4.
      As for helix, you can blend the transition with fillets.

    When I do the second half way, the ends become offset from the ruled surface when I twist them

  • @ianphillips7778
    @ianphillips7778 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    This is a big improvement on the last video where the material thinned out in the twist. Is it possible to join the 3 surfaces and do the offset in 1 operation?

    • @MangoJellySolutions
      @MangoJellySolutions  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you. I have been thinking about that. I wondering setting orientation of the ruled surface to something different would solve the issue. In a matter of fact, I think that could be the answer

    @Silver_Fox_Weirdo ปีที่แล้ว +3

    hm. i think fundamental problem in freecad UX it is paradigma of transformations: for difference situations difference tools. i hope in future we can see more NURBS surface and 3D Bezier curves based modeling

    • @MangoJellySolutions
      @MangoJellySolutions  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I agree, there are so many hidden gem workbench tools out there that sometimes it is hard to figure out where to look. I did a tutorial on using one of the tools in the curved shapes workbench. A small workbench with a handful of extremely powerful tools that have changed some of the techniques I use especially when it comes to Nurbs. The surface workbench is pretty light on tools and it would be good to see tools from these curves and Curved shapes workbenches included as default.

    • @andrewshkolik
      @andrewshkolik ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MangoJellySolutions for me one critical part missed right now is continuity between surfaces... It is kinda here, when you creating boundary surface, but what will be more useful is continuity modifier between 2 already created surfaces like in NX or solid edge. Looks like devs started some work in surface wb and that is good, but who know how long it will take to bring this tools to perfection. Curves wb is great, but it approximation based, so it's tools cannot be ported directly to surface WB.

    • @PyroNine9

      @@MangoJellySolutions If the blend surface in Curves had an orientation parameter like the Part Ruled Surface, this would be a lot quicker to do. Building it manually as you did is a good workaround.

    Im personally averse to going out of part design because of how it affects the feature tree, so i would have done things maybe slightly differently.
    Maybe using helix, and then filleting the transition, or lofting between couple of intermediate profiles (perhaps using the curved shapes method you demoed recently) , maybe a pipe along a curved path. Again this is mostly because im averse to leaving pd because it messes with the feature tree.

    • @MangoJellySolutions
      @MangoJellySolutions  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The linear flow of part design is so much easier to view, I have been very tempted to 'double up' the videos to allow for the option of following either. The nearing of part workflows can get messy but part allows for more flexibility. Sub object shape binder comes into its own to borrow edges from shapes that have been made by other workbenches

    • @H34...
      @H34... ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MangoJellySolutionsyeah, the linear flow of the feature tree makes it much more coherent and readable. Not a huge deal here but on a more complex model it really becomes important.
      I use the linkstage3 version of freecad which really expands what part design is capable of and takes off some random shackles that it has in the main branch. Stuff like multi solid bodies, shape binders can be used in lofts, you can selectively extrude parts of sketchs and reuse sketchs, and a few other odd restrictions of main branch freecad have been lifted in LS3 making PD workbench so much more powerful.

    The comments were way out of line. So many of them latched onto the length of the video ignoring the fact it was a tutorial, no shortcuts used, plenty of explanation etc.
    One fella was saying freecad not only isnt worth the time and that it was worth "negative time", suggesting that blender and plasticity (organic 3d modelers) were somehow a superior substitute for a CAD program (like, say, freecad).

      @@imoldovan There are ways out the poor UI. Unlike many "polished" commercial UI's that have things locked down because the UI design team decided that's how it's supposed to work.
      First - customize your tool bars. Get those things you use regularly up there. You can add whatever tools from other workbenches to your favorite workbench.
      My preferred solution is Pie Menus. A quick tap of the Tab key brings up access to whatever custom Pie Menu I want to make for myself. And the menu is right there in the window at the point I'm working at.
      Once you spend some time using a tool, you begin to realize that you a handful of tools regularly. Some only on occasion, somethings seldom, and a lot of it never. Figure out what you mostly use, set up your menus to reflect that, and be happy.

    • @MangoJellySolutions
      @MangoJellySolutions  ปีที่แล้ว

      If that's the case what defaults do you suggest?

      @@MangoJellySolutions : for example start end end parameters adjusted to match the side nearest to the mouse click; sign of size parameters each preset in direction of the other vertice ; continuity and size values preset from previously chosen values.
      FreeCAD is a great tool and I highly value the work of the developers. But I often have the feeling that developers have more fun (which is great, they are doing this for free, so they should have fun) working on specialization and featurism than on generalization and user-friendliness. Best example for the usabillity hell is the destinction between Draft and Sketch workbenches.
