And when you lose all your sleeping places start sleeping on the streets. Your house is perfect to have all your books in and when your house is full, buy another one

That's amazing! I can't envy you though because I straight up do not have the space to keep that many books in. I'm already stacking books on the floor due to no shelf space XD Where do you keep them all?
If your dream is for a library to exist with your name, why don't you start working on it from now on? That way you can share your books and the library would be totally to your liking. It seems to me that telling your son that he should do that work after you die is a very big burden that you should not impose on him. The passion for books and the dream of the library is yours, work to achieve it and do not put burdens on those who do not belong. I think it is an excellent idea to encourage reading through a library, just do it and don't delegate the responsibility of your dreams to others.
I’m Book Goblin! My dad once told me to get rid of all my books…this was many, many years ago (like 20) and I’ve still not managed to quite forgive him
I had a boyfriend suggest that once. Just once. After I explained to him that asking me to give up my books was like me asking him to give up all of his gaming systems, figures, anime DVDs.... And some of my books were part of my inheritance from my grandma.....He never asked again.

The missus and I have this conversation at least once a fortnight. I have to explain that every time she says 'downsize' it means she no longer loves me.
Right!! I know it's not quite the same, and I still have physical copies of my most favorite, but I have over a thousand books on my Kindle that are just at my fingertips whenever I want any of them.
I absolutely relate to this. I own many many books and bookshelves are full. It has been suggested I downsize by some. When told this I had a similar reaction as Book Goblin on the inside. Book Goblin is truly one of us.

But there is one thing this Book Goblin wants to know. Mind giving me some horror stories of when you got a book back from family or friend? I’ll give you my horror story as well. If you like.
I have two: I lent a friend my first edition copy of Wicked and she never gave it back. I didn't know where she lived, which led to my rule of only lending books to people whose addresses I know. The second one is I lent a copy of Anthony Bourdain's first book to a friend who lent it to someone with a meth problem. Shocking-not-shocking, Meth head never returned it.
@@JulieWineReason I once lent a book to my aunt and she kept it for months, almost a year. When I got it back 80% of the cover art was rubbed off, she’d bent it backwards, it looked like it fell in water, the pages were yellow, some ink faded in places, pages either folded or torn at the corners, or even completely folded. I was silently seething. I asked her why the pages looked like they had been in water and her answer was, “Oh, I only read it while I was having a bubble bath.” 😡 Then she had the balls to ask to borrow another one. The only reason I didn’t smack her face with my damaged book was that it would damaged it further. It had been through enough already. Poor thing is still in my small library. Damaged or not I want it safe.
Now my idea for a Goblin Wizard DnD character makes even more sense than before! I want to give them a Portable Hole so that they can have a place to store all of their books without needing to worry about the inherent weight. Thank you so much for the entertaining and inspiring video!
As much as I love books, there is a limit on how many books I have space for. And there *are* books I really don't use anymore. So downsizing is usually a good thing for me. Plus, being energy-sensitive as I am, books just sitting there not getting read/used as reference material create stagnant energy, which can pull on my own energy over time. There's a reason "spring cleaning" is so refreshing for so many. 😅
A room without books is a sad room. My bathroom is too small for basically anything (but bendy people can reach out of the door and grab one when it matters) but every other room of the house has a basket for books or a book case (or 3). If its in a basket then its not abandoned!
Honestly, this is so relatable. When we were under fire evacuation alert I took 30 five gallon plastic bags of all my books and loaded up my dogs and my Mother yelled that I had no clothes. Like I can replace the clothes, NOT the BOOKS!! 😂😂 Happily we did not have to evacuate, but I had to put all my books back on the shelves. Still cannot downsize. 😅
In my family, we never sell two things: instruments and books. (Unless it’s the Twilight series.) This results in a VERY FULL storage unit. But I did discover we have a first edition Robert Graves is near-perfect condition, so I think the trade off is worth it.
So, we bought a house after living in a RV for 12 years. The house has a library and 2 book shelves will be built in our hall (1 to replace a door we are closing off and 1 to create a secret door to a staircase). In 3 weeks we will be able to fully move all my books in and I promised to limit myself to those shelves (plus maybe one section in the kitchen for cookbooks). I literally have books in the closet, every possible surface of the RV, hanging on a door, under my boys bunks, and several cabinets. I’m dreading if we have to downsize. We also homeschool and I don’t currently have a car to go to the library, so it’s a struggle. I feel for Book Goblin.
I moved enough times that I did finally embrace digital. Now my entire library goes with me everywhere! But I gotta admit I kinda miss the days of overflowing bookshelves 😂
Tip from one book goblin to another: it's easier to let them go if you give them to someone who hasn't read that book before, but who you know will love it. I've been letting go of a lot of my childhood favorites to the two little girls next door.
This is me vs my stepdad growing up. Needless to say, the book goblin did not get rid of her books. Or downsize. It’s definitely worse now… although I do generally get new books on the kindle now
Under the bed in bins is a valid place for books in small living quarters. I do relate with book goblin but I also prefer to keep a curated collection so I do about once a year cull titles I either haven't read, didn't love, and/or don't want to pass to my children. I add about the same amount in though the year that I remove lol

The way to make a book goblin less dangerous: "If I trip on the books, they could get hurt. So lets make sure they arent hurt by putting them away from the public spaces." Thats how I was taught
Nah. I'm with book goblin 100% here - if you can walk around your house and actually see wall space that's not taken up with shelves and books then you don't have enough books.
The game "What Remains of Edith Finch" has one of the coolest houses I've ever seen. Its kind of sad, but each new family member recieved a room to decorate and live in, and more rooms were added on as a the family grew. There are secret passagways all over, and each room has its own style to match its occupant. But the part thats really cool is how they handle organized chaos. Theres books everywhere on the first floor, stacked neatly on shelves, piled on counters, and turning to little towers on the floors. Nicknacks are everywhere, and despite the house not having been lived in for years, it still holds a homey feel. A time capsule that didn't rust or age. The chimney is made from brick from the original house that sank at sea on its journey from where the Finch family originally came from. Theres an unfinished dragon slide submerged in a pond next to the house. Theres a bunker hidden behind a false panel in the fridge in the basement. A boat, a castle turret, and a treehouse all make up seperate rooms built on top of the house. The place even has its own library. All in all, its a fantastic game with a sad, but fascinating story. I'd highly recommend it. It feels almost like reading a book, but you are also provided with visials instead of only words.
I feel you book goblin. When I was 13 my parents got a new book shelf (a big one!) and put it in my room, because I had two teetering towers of books behind my bedroom door (actually they weren't teetering, that's just for extra drama, I would never stack my books irresponsibly). I got very excited and immediately started moving my books and organising them, I filled two of the five rows of books immediately, and I was making plans for the rest when my father came in with some of his and my mom's books... and started filling out the rest of the space. I guess it's genetic. That's about when I resigned myself to getting used to reading books on a screen instead of paperbacks.
I love book goblin 😅 i can completely relate to her situation just because you're finished with a book right now doesn't mean it won't become essential at a moment's notice
!!! About the hallway books, they're for what I like to call. A ✨quick change✨ I do these (not the hallway part, but the ✨quick change✨) when I'm bored with one book, and want to quickly start (or continue) another !!!
I'm picky about my books so I often will have books that I read and just didn't care for, and I have this lovely local book store that will give you points for new books in exchange for books in fair condition. One of my favorite places after the library. Unfortunately my shelves keep getting full and my pile of eh books keeps getting smaller
I started my book goblin phase in middle school and accumulated about 200 books in less than 2 years. My mom wanted me to downsize while I wanted more shelves, her solution was to take me to a used book store that accepted book trades for store credit and put me on a book budget. I could either trade in books I no longer read or weren't my favorites or I could cut back on new books altogether. Twenty years later and I now have a book collection full of only books I absolutely love and fond memories spent with my mom hunting for gems among densely packed shelves of used books.
That "Downsize?" was deeply personal
Fancy people call it “rightsizing.”

Solution: sleep on the couch so you can convert your bed into additional book space
The bed is already full, I have moved to the floor to use the couch as book space.
When I was a child, I converted my bedroom floor into my book space, after also filling my wardrobe, because who needs clothes when you can have books
Why sleep on the floor when there is so much space for books there? Better to sleep in the bathtub on the blanket~ /j

Adding a kindle to my life made my book goblin soooooo happy. Infinite room in tiny space. Like TARDIS only full of words….
My best friend just moved into a house with a library. I helped her organize her books and it was such a joy!!
I applaud Book Goblin's restraint, i rxlected her to attack mich earlier 😂
Never question Book goblin about her books.. it isn't safe...lol....keep up the great work❤
I feel best about letting go of my books when I can donate them to a school, library, shelters, etc.
I love Book Goblin, btw. Thank you!
Being unable to downsize your book collection is me also grrr no touch books rawr ♥️♥️♥️
I love book goblin 😅 i can completely relate to her situation just because you're finished with a book right now doesn't mean it won't become essential at a moment's notice
that “Meh?” sound is golden 😂
Book. Goblin. Is. So. Cute! 😂
!!! About the hallway books, they're for what I like to call. A ✨quick change✨ I do these (not the hallway part, but the ✨quick change✨) when I'm bored with one book, and want to quickly start (or continue) another !!!
I agree with Book Goblin.......hands off the BOOKS.........
My immediate response to ‘Downsize’ was ‘how dare you!’
"Downsize?" Book Goblin asked calmly
I relate to book goblin SO MUCH this episode ❤📚
I'm picky about my books so I often will have books that I read and just didn't care for, and I have this lovely local book store that will give you points for new books in exchange for books in fair condition. One of my favorite places after the library. Unfortunately my shelves keep getting full and my pile of eh books keeps getting smaller
"Shelves... are full"
"Already?"
