USS Wasp, I served as flight deck corpsman early 92 until my honorable discharge in Nov 93. Did the Shellback initiation on that deck when we crossed equator during operations off the coast of Somalia summer 93.

As I stood in line to make a purchase I started talking to a young man behind me. I noticed his wife was looking at me. She then screamed, “Look at his cap!” He did and was somewhat shocked when he read Wasp Association. I told him my father had been on the Wasp’s first Pacific cruise in 1944. He said he had been a sailor on the new Wasp’s first cruise.

What’s interesting is that this, though it is an aircraft carrier, is way too small for the US to use it as such. It’s used as a support vessel for amphibious landings. For most countries, this is an aircraft carrier, but the US says “Nah, too small” and builds what we call “Supercarriers” now, which are used like true aircraft carriers.

My uncle served on a ship called the Wasp in ww2 and it was attacked. He was a medic and saw some shit. He came back almost comatose and was never the same.

In 1996 while serving onboard the USS SEATTLE AOE-3 while on an underway “REPLENISHMENT @SEA “ alongside the USS WASP our Helmsman lost control of *GYRO COMPASS” causing a collision ! I was at the aft end of the ship conducting flight quarters when I witnessed the wasp elevator taking out out flight quarters tower on the o3-deck and damaging out B and H crane on the o2 deck ! NO INJURIES REPORTED!

Saw that ship in Norfolk recently. Big ship, not as big as the mighty carriers. Attached to Wing 3, aboard the USS Ike.
