  • WELCOME TO CHESHIRE!
Legends of Giants are few and far between in the United Kingdom. There are a couple of notable ones like Finn McCool - the Irish giant who supposedly built a causeway across the Irish Sea to Scotland to battle Benandonner, a fellow Scottish giant - but generally speaking there aren't many to speak of. In fact, throughout history you'd be hard pushed to find anyone that was tall enough to be considered a giant except for maybe Robert Wadlow.
Even he would have been smaller than the "Childe" though. Wadlow only measured 8 foot 11 inches, which is slightly smaller than the 9 foot 3 inches that John Middleton would have occupied! Middleton was a resident of this village, on he outskirts of Liverpool. Legend has it as a boy he traced an outline of a figure in the sand along the shore of the River Mersey, and then fell asleep, waking to find he had grown to the full size of the outline.
He would go on to be buried in the churchyard here, and his size is something incredible when you look at both his grave and the life size statue of him outside the Manor House just a few yards down the road. He wrestled for King James I, and given his size, I would certainly not have liked to have been his opponent! This village has a lot more to offer than just the Childe though.
There's a lot to cover in the park, which once had a hall and was the seat of the Ireland-Blackburne family, famed for mining rock salt. There's also a lighthouse along the Mersey shore, once a regular haunt for the members of The Beatles in their childhoods. You cannot miss the amazing village hall and war memorial, and you also have to admire the incredible thatched cottages, some of which are listed buildings. This village is governed by a parish council, but there's also the rare right here for this township (yes, township) to elect Freemen, one of which becomes Lord Mayor.
As villages go, this one is a blindingly good start to the county of Cheshire, and I did do my best to not literally blind you with the sun as I walked around this one in the evening as opposed to the the height of the thirty degree heat during the day. Welcome to HALE.

Hale Hall was my family's origins before removing to Virginia around 1595, Maryland in 1620 and then the Eastern Shore of Maryland 1674 and we've been here since. Another later group removed to NYC 1774. We've a very rich history in America. Many Lancashire names are also here in my county Caroline, Beauchamps, Holland, Middleton, and over a dozen more. I'm a 14th or 15th generation upon Chesapeake bay region. On a side note, Sir Steven Ireland was Sir William Wallace's most trusted lieutenant. It's said the family hails from nobility in both Ireland around the 900s and Normandy around 1066, not with King William, but rendering support, and married into King William's female line. The deCourcy-Ireland line holds the distinction of being the only house of the English peerage not required to remove their hats to the Crown. Not that I would as I don't recognize the House of Windsor's legitimacy to begin with, nor do I find they've the moral character befitting the Crown.
