The Glacier Express used from one end to the other without stopping is in my opinion rather unnerving, even if it is equipped with a dining car. So I prefer the Bernina Express or, even better, the brand new GoldenPass Express. By the way, have they restored the direct connection, without changing trains, between Montreux and Interlaken?

hi Olivia, can i check when do we need to book the Glacier express if we are planning to ride it? i will be getting 15 days SBB train tickets. and for all the ride like gondola at all the mountain, do we need to book it in advance or can be on the spot? many thanks!
You can reserve ur seat 3 months in advance, and buy your tickets 2 months in advance. Please check out my full glacier express guide (link in description!)
for gondolas, I find it better to book it on the spot just in case of bad weather but you can have the option to book it on the website.

Any comment on Ezcellence class? The car above first class
I heard that its all inclusive. In terms of catering, i read reports that staff reluctant to take orders near chur station. Something about where they load/unload.
I find the Excellence Class too overpriced and not worth the steep increase in price, it’s something I personally will not go for so I won’t recommend it to my subscribers.
The first class experience is already incredible. You can save the rest of the money on a good hotel stay 🙂
Thank you for these detail informtion. I have a further question. You said that with Swiss Travel Pass, we can choose either 1st or 2nd class on Glacier Express. But does it depend on the class of Swiss Travel Pass ? For example, I buy 2nd class STP, so I have to take 2nd class Glacier Express, or I can also choose 1st class ? Thank you in advance.
If you are the holder of a season ticket, a pass, a 2nd class day pass, etc., then it will be sufficient for you to obtain the so-called "class change", possibly on board the train or steamer. Naturally, if you use a train with compulsory reservation, this is allowed if there are seats in the upper class. The reservation you made for 2nd class goes to cavalry. It is also always possible to upgrade on night trains made up of sleeping and couchette cars, provided there are higher-level sleeping places available.
You can pay for the class upgrade just for the glacier express, and it’s all good even with second class STP!

Important clarification especially for those coming from overseas and not used to traveling on trains with two or more travel classes. Especially in areas where the so-called integrated fares have come into force, it may happen that the application present on the smartphone offers first class travel even where there is only 2nd class. For example, between Lugano and Ponte Tresa (magnificent narrow-gauge railway) the FFS application also offers 1st class although all trains are made up exclusively of wagons and carriages of only 2nd class.
You didnt talk about the trip back.

There is no Glacier Express service at all from 16 October to 9 December 2023 or from 13 October to 6 December 2024. Just wondering will there be any changes on the dates, because i am going on 5th Dec for 7 days.

Zermatt Morning = Glacier 8 hours = St. Moriz = Zurich Airport Evening to get 6pm flight?
This is for sure not possible. U will only reach St Moritz at only late afternoon about 5pm, and I want to correct this false assumption that people ALWAYS have…that st moritz is close by to Zurich. It’s not!! It takes 3-3.5 hours from st moritz to Zurich. Zurich is at the north of Switzerland while St Moritz is at the eastern side. If you do this you will hundred percent miss ur flight 😅
The only alternative is to alight earlier at Chur, and then do the transfer to Zurich (much shorter at 1 hour), U will still catch the snow sceneries at Disentis (assuming u are travelling in winter time) but u will miss the last scenic part at the Landwasser Viaduct.
