I could be wrong but the guy's voice sounds like Tsukki's VA just from listening few random lines in this episode. What do you think? Also Violet's VA is for sure Mikasa's VA from AOT and the Lieutenant Hodgins sound like Zeke from AOT but not sure.
To clear up some questions you had at the beginning- This is by no means a “Netflix original” despite Netflix’s odd claim that it is. They only purchased the streaming rights AFTER the show was made, they had literally nothing to do with production. As for your question about this being adapted from something- Kyoto Animation holds a writing contest each year with various prizes available. Winners get published under KyoAni’s own book label, and many of them end up getting anime adaptations from the studio. Violet Evergarden is a novel and was the first time in the contests history that someone actually won the Grand Prize. Beautiful show in just about every aspect, excited for you to experience it!
@@korosuch.3405 KyoAni puts out some great stuff. I loved Hibike! Euphonium even more and am looking forward to the continuation of that series, but Violet Evergarden is a great show in its own right.

It's not underrated. It's rated very highly on MyAnimeList and the final movie is top 20, and peaked at #12 all time. It's one of KyoAni's most successful and popular shows of the decade. Whats wrong with some of yall?
One of my all time favs. There were some reactors that watched it when it came out but I think we dont see that many anymore because it is heavily copyright guarded.
Kyoto Animation is to me the greatest animation studio. There are great studios who do amazing work. But Kyoto has a way of making everything so expressive like no one else does.
I think this is the only show I have ever watched that has made me cry almost every episode. It's a great show and don't worry about asking questions, most things will be answered and asking questions is perfectly normal especially for reactions.
Another quick comment: the voice actor for Benedict (angsty blonde dude lol) is Koki Uchiyama, who played Miyamura in Horimiya, and Tsukishima in Haikyuu. Violet's VA also did Mikasa in Attack On Titan, as well as Fuyutsuki-san in The Ice Guy and his Cool Female Colleague (another really cute rom-com about two very chill (heh) introverts in a workplace setting getting to know each other and developing feelings for each other--highly recommend this one!
I barely recognized Claudia's VA as Zeke in AoT, I was really like "Wait, I do know him somehow, right?" and then I googled it. Still amazes me how differently he delivers Claudia - as a "good warm kind uncle", unlike certain someone, and how his (gorgeous) voice impacts you as an audience in different ways.
I have so many mixed emotions regarding this series considering what happened to KyoAni a year later after this was released. Pain, gratitude, heartbreak, hope..I always wonder how the the surviving members of the studio are doing today, and if we'll ever see KyoAni return to form despite the tragic losses they've suffered. This series touches on that - a FMC learning and striving to overcome loss. The thoughtfulness, care, and love that was put into writing and animating this story really connects you to the various characters that Violet will eventually encounters throughout the series, and the emotions it pulls you into is very intentional. Every time I re-watch this series my heart goes out to those KyoAni survivors, and I like to imagine that in some way, they too take each day at a time. Much like Violet does. One task, one day, one moment. At a time. What a wonderful story about learning to cope and deal with the worst that life can give you. As someone who has also experienced loss in a variety of ways...this show has really given something back to me that I hold very close to my heart: that just as you can allow yourself to mourn and embrace sadness, you can also allow yourself to hope.
Violet Evergarden is one of the best shows to have ever been produced, and still can’t be topped from my list of top 10 favorites personally. I’m so glad you’re finally diving into this beautiful show that centers around what it means to “love” and “be human” after war. You’re going to love it!
There are shows that can make people cry, and then there are shows that try and find out how many different ways they can make people cry. Joy, beauty, relief, hope, loss, love, grief, regret, pain, catharsis, fear, empathy, guilt; there are dozens of ways someone can be moved to tears, and they're all a beautiful and valid part of what makes us human. This show is a journey, and it leaves a mark on everyone who watches it. It's art in every sense of the word.
Visually speaking Kyoto Animation knocked it out of the park, Violet to me is visually perfect when she gets the iconic dress. Such a fantastic show, OVAs are good as well culminating in such a great movie
Violet Evergarden is a very slow burn. Gorgeously animated, carefully and deliberately plotted, it's a KyoAni masterpiece. To get the full gist, you have to watch the Season, which does the heavy lifting for world building and character introductions, but the Movies become a must watch to bring the story to completion. For some, the melodrama is a bit heavy handed, but on the whole, it's an interesting look at a child-soldier with PTSD, with no access to counselling, having to navigate normal society after the conclusion of a war.
You have no idea how happy I am that you’ve started Violet Evergarden!!! It’s easily in my top 5 anime of all time. I *really* wish that Netflix didn’t claim that it’s a “Netflix original series” though, because it’s *not.*
Super excited for this one! I'll absolutely be following along for the ride on this one. One thing I'd thought I'd bring to your attention if you didn't know this already. In Japanese, there are a few different ways to convey the word 'love'. 好き (suki) or 大好き (daisuki) are pretty commonly heard in a lot of romance shows and anime, but the version that is being used here in Violet Evergarden is 愛してる (aishiteru). The big difference here is that aishiteru is a very different kind of 'love' compared to suki or daisuki. Whereas suki is "like" or "fondness/affection", and daisuki is "I like you very much / a lot", aishiteru expresses such a sincere and deep love that Japanese only use it in long-term relationships with their spouse and very emotional situations such as getting married or when someone is on their death bed. So it has a lot more weight to it than what in the West would be a casual "I love you" between partners. One more interesting fact! The alphabet in this show is actually a fully real alphabet and not just random symbols. Kyoto Animation, the studio that made this show, went so far as to create an entire alphabet just for this show, and when fans cracked it, they actually sent a Tweet to the studio with a translated letter written IN the language from the show!
Violet Evergarden was adapted from a light novel under Kyoto Animation's publisher KA Esuma Bunko. Netflix also just plastered their name all over the series because they own the streaming rights, but it's totally done by KyoAni. The Violet Evergarden light novel won the studio's writing contest grand prize for the first time since they started doing, it since a the grand prize being given out was never a guaranteed outcome each year. It got turned into an anime for winning and is very different (for the better imo, like way better) from the LN.
I get a little emotional thinking about the artists making this show. They were working on the Violet Evergarden movie when that damn arsonist lit the building on fire. Killed half the people in the building. The beauty of their work. and the horrible way many of them died. :/
This anime is dear to me, and I was sobbing half-way through your reaction... so, to see you feel emotional just from the first episode was just so heartwarming - I really hope you end up enjoying this, and no one spoils anything for you. A couple things, even though others have probably already said - Violet Evergarden is based a light novel of the same name by Kana Akatsuki. It was only two volumes, but a third sequel volume titled "Violet Evergarden Ever After" was written and published shortly before the finale movie was released. The second thing is that OVA movie with the girl that wanted to be a mail carrier... titled "Violet Evergarden: Eternity and the Auto Memory Doll" - that's an anime original side story that doesn't have anything to do with the main story. I hope you enjoyed it
I'm sure you get a lot of recommendations, but you might find A Place Further Than the Universe worth watching as well! I'd love to see your reaction to it!
