  • In this video we show a great demo called "Big Things" and the incredible sound capabilities of the external audio interface using the AY-3-8910.
The AY-3-8910: A Pioneering Audio Chip
The AY-3-8910, released by General Instrument in 1978, was a revolutionary 3-voice programmable sound generator (PSG) that greatly impacted early home computers and arcade video games.
    Key Features:
3 Audio Channels: 1 mono and 2 stereo
Sound and Noise Generation: 9 monophonic voices, 3 noise generators, high-pass and low-pass filters, ADSR envelope generator, frequency and amplitude modulation
Programmable Control: Achieved through internal registers accessed by software
Cost-Effective and Easy to Use: This fueled its widespread adoption
    Applications:
Home Computers: ZX Spectrum 48K, Amstrad CPC, MSX, Atari ST, Commodore 64 (with expansion), and many more
Arcade Video Games: Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, Galaxian, Space Invaders, and hundreds of others
Other Devices: Music synthesizers, electronic toys
    Impact:
Rich and Complex Sound: Enabled creation of immersive sound experiences for games and programs of the era
Widespread Popularity: Contributed to the success of numerous home computers and video games
Lasting Influence: Its architecture inspired generations of subsequent audio chips
    How it Worked:
Subtractive Synthesis: Employed basic waveforms (like sine waves) combined and modified to generate complex sounds
Digital Control: Internal registers defined parameters like volume, frequency, envelope, and modulation
Flexibility: Could produce a wide range of sounds, from simple sound effects to intricate melodies
    Variations:
    AY-3-8910: Base model
AY-3-8912: Included an integrated stereo D/A converter
    YM2149F: Clone produced by Yamaha
    Legacy:
The AY-3-8910 left a lasting mark on computing and video games. Its simplicity, affordability, and versatility made it a popular choice for hardware and software designers. Its characteristic sound is still recognizable today in many classic games.
