As a former Montana Highway Patrolman, you did a great job on the winter kit. 95% of the people who get stuck were unprepared people from out of state and visiting, usually during Thanksgiving and Christmas time. They were always stressed and suffering anxiety when going off the road. Most people just slide off the road and are stuck in the deep snow a few feet from the shoulder. Using a shovel and traction device(s) they could have got themselves back on the road, instead they are stuck for hours waiting for a tow truck. A couple of things to add to the kit, I would recommend hard plastic knee pads for putting on tire chains or if you need to do extended work on the ground/road like changing a tire, etc. A traditional road flare also doubles as an outstanding fire starter in the winter. Some drinking water and a jug/vessel to urinate in is also good if you are going to get stuck on a highway that is shutdown or impassable. Throw some handwarmers into the kit also.
.... 4 minutes in and I learned something .... so many new mountain drivers drive the way they do is because they have tires rated for "Snowflakes"... lol.. .... Well informed video .. Amazing how many people get into trouble on the roads in winter ,, with all these videos of what to have and how to's with direct kinks to quality gear ... and more than half probably have no reason to be out on the roads in the first place ... .... Congrats on the engagement ..... can you show another pic of her ?? .. lol.. She's Beautiful with a sense of humor and I'm sure a sense of adventure ,, Lucky man ...
Congrats on the engagement. I have been married 20 years, it has been tough at points, but we persevered and now I could not be happier. Thanks for the great videos.
Thanks for making this Mike - For someone who works outside all year round, with 4 seasons, I am always looking for more tips to stay warm in the winter! Congrats on the engagement dude!
I appreciate the fact that your forgot about tire chains and you probably got done with the video, walked into your house and then it probably hit you and you got back up turned on your camera and filmed your interjection that just goes to show how much you genuinely care about teaching people to be prepared and having a good idea and options on how they can prepare
I keep a really small bottle of antifreeze also. It's not environmentally friendly and I don't use it unless it's an emergency, but it'll do the trick. Great video!!
I've always thought it would be interesting to see someone test their get home bag. As in, try to get home from a remote location, and see if it can actually support your needs. Would be great to see!
Congratulations on the engagement! I keep a small backpacking stove and fuel in my truck along with some hot coca mix. It's perfect to make some hot cocoa after a winter hike and can be used in an emergency as well.
I used to live near the Academy if you want to know the school called me the Honorary Coloradan or GA peach! We still have the stuff we kept from Colorado
Mike: If you live in Hawaii or California or Arizona or wherever it doesn't actually have winter... Me: Donner Pass is in California.... 😳 Seriously, man, another great video. Congrats on the engagement!!! And I'm sure I'm not the only one pulling for Atreyu's quick and uncomplicated recovery.
These videos are so comprehensive! I moved to CO a couple months ago and I'm going winter camping for the first time in years this weekend and this was super helpful!
17:30 in the film industry we put “red tape” on anything broken or not to be used. Might be smart to put tape of the bottle to remind yourself or someone to not drink it haha
I just want to give my appreciation to the meteorologists out there. I know generally people don’t think weather forecasts are accurate or they get upset when it rains on what they said it was going to be a sunny day...BUT reading weather patterns and creating forecasts is HARD and they do an amazing job. I mean, wtf, the ability to PREDICT THE FUTURE accurately (about 4-5 days in advance) is AMAZING!
Buddy of mine lives in northern Alberta Canada and -30 or lower isn’t uncommon in the winter. He made the point “if you go off the road and your window breaks, you’ll freeze, turn the heat down and dress like your life depends on it”
Not gonna watch this way to long video for 2 reasons..... One... I'm tired of gear reviews. Two... I live in Florida so it's irrelevant. Your're still getting a thumbs up cause you're cool. Lol. Congratulations on the engagement!!
@@LastLineOfDefense The weekenderlanders for sure. I know, it's winter up there and it's cold. Some gear reviews are interesting. Just winter gear isn't for me. Lol.
Great video I’ll definitely be adding to my kit this season. One recommendation I have is considering a military surplus folding shovel. They can collapse down to the size of a typical shovel “head” and that space saving is very valuable in smaller vehicles
In a pinch you can wrap a strap through your wheel (just through the rim, not around whole tire), then secure to something well anchored. When the wheel turns the strap twist, shortening in length, and you pull yourself out.
Good info dude. Any chance of a boot review? Kind of like your pants review vids? I moved to Northern AZ from SoCal last year. Im phasing out my slip on Vans haha
To expand on your kitty litter comment from personal experience. in the winter I get two of the large plastic tubs of kitty litter, and secure them as far to the rear of my truck bed as possible. This adds extra weight to the suspension (not much unless you get SEVERAL tubs or 50lb bags.) but the kitty litter has dual purpose of adding grit to a smooth surface (ice) and absorbs water. It is a method that has been used at least since the 50s where they made a gadget you could install above your fenders in your car that would sprinkle sand and salt at the push of a button. It is an environmentally friendly alternative to salt (which can poison plants causing unnecessary erosion) or chemical ice melters since basic kitty litter is granulated clay. I also keep a propane weed torch in my truck when expecting ice. you can use it to melt the ice down to solid surfaces if need be though I have more often used it to burn stripes into the ice to create a ladder bar effect which seems to help (of course it may simply be that I was melting the ice down to solid traction when I did.)
Since you’ve been growing FJ’s, how do you manage being prepared with multiple vehicles? Somethings make sense to duplicate but others may not. For example do you have a get home bag in each rig or do you transfer it? Would love to hear your thoughts on strategy here.
Used both sand and kitty litter ( none clumping) works great and adds weight to the back of trucks) but haven’t needed it since buying a 4Runner and having higher quality tires (Yokohama’s)
I don't know where you live, but we here in North Central Arizona, Definitely have Winters here, and 38 miles up the road in Flagstaff, Definitely has Snowy Winters! I do most all of my Wheeling and camping in a TJ,ice chest and tent,Takes up most of my cargo space!
Sleeping bag is definitely a good thing to have. If you slide off the road and damage your radiator a full tank of fuel will do you no good. Also congrats on the engagement.
All good tips that I used to do when I traveled from our house in Portland, OR to the in-laws in Yakima, WA. Not too much need for this video in Honolulu, HI. Still watched because I like gear too.
Here's the funny hat - amzn.to/2WZPzjQ - not that I necessarily think it's the best investment, haha...

You would like what dad and I like to put in the car.

Thanks for making this Mike - For someone who works outside all year round, with 4 seasons, I am always looking for more tips to stay warm in the winter! Congrats on the engagement dude!
Congratulations on the engagement. For the extra jacket vacuum sealing it gives you a bit more storage space.
Congratulations on your engagement! Don’t forget it’s constant work but if you love it it won’t seem like work.
Congrats on the engagement. By far my favorite overlanding couple
Congratulations you guys, we wish you the very best of everything. Can't wait to see the wedding!

Congrats on the engagement all the way from Hawaii! Checked our forecast and no snow yet!
Haha lucky!
There’s a snack in my boot.
Haha nice one Woody
Lol good one cowboy
First, congrats on the engagement!....and dude, you've given me a lot to think about for my winter kit/gear. Thx for sharing! 🤙-Josh
Congrats on the engagement man! Happy for the great news, cool video!
Congratulations Mike and Ashley! Wish you the best years ahead!
Thanks!

He has a video where he’s done that. It’s a little older.
Well the hat was an interesting start. 😏 Congrats to both of you on your engagement! 👍

Congratulations on your engagement
Big congrats! And hope the pupper heals up quick!!
Congratulations on the engagement
Congratulations on your engagement! Hope for a quick recovery for the pup!
Congrats on the engagement and Happy New Year from Australia 🇦🇺
I don’t do much snow driving because most of our tracks get closed in the winter.
Yeah I know there's a bit out there, but definitely not a ton!
Congratulations on the engagement!! Happy New Year, wishing you both the best of luck and a long happy marriage.
Major congrats on getting engaged! When you are getting the new property setup put in one of those heated driveways that melt and clear the driveway
Good video. I live in Wyoming and I am very prepared. Weather is unpredictable. Thanks

Congrats to you two on the engagement!

Yeah and even though they're often not quite right, they definitely usually at least give you an idea.
@@LastLineOfDefense True, I shouldn’t have said “accurately 4-5 days in advance” but rather a fairly good idea. Congrats on the engagement by the way.

congratulations on the engagement!! crazy how much stuff you have in your truck. i would do the same but where i live, people will pry that open
Great video I’ll definitely be adding to my kit this season.

Cant hear the road and the snow is perfect. Congrats on your engagement and Happy new year from the UK
Going to make a winter kit now, great job Mike
Congratulations to you and ash ...🥂🎉🎊
Everyone needs a truck set up like this.
In a pinch your cars floor mats can also be put in front of your tires to get traction, not as good as maxtrax but could help!
Funny that the Kuhl banner came across the screen right as you showed your IG engagement lol, so it was indeed a Kuhl fashion shoot!
Haha weird
Congrats on the engagement!
Another great video, just moved to the midwest from the deep south... a lot of vehicle and driving changes!
Congratulations 🎉🎊 to both of you.
Miami here, still a great video with great information.
Thanks for sharing.
MAJOR CONGRATS TO YOU BOTH! Thanks a million for the snowblower clip - haha!
Good info dude. Any chance of a boot review? Kind of like your pants review vids? I moved to Northern AZ from SoCal last year. Im phasing out my slip on Vans haha

Good overview. I also cary a small candle. For light and some heat within the cab. Don't forget to crack a window.
Great video congratulations on your engagement happy new year to one and all hope 2021 is a much better year .
I carry alot of that stuff plus a good old ak105 for coyotes or what ever else you may need it for....

Roof shingles work great for added weight, and then use them for traction if you get stuck.
Awesome little winter preparedness video! And congrats on the engagement!
