We've actually day-hiked to Static Peak a few times. We planned on going up this trip but were told that Alaska Basin was buried in snow by some folks hiking out. We decided that if we made it to the pass overlooking the basin and everything was white we would just hike back out. We've camped in a muddy mess before and it's not our bag. It would be about a 20-mile day if we turned around so we decided to forgo Static Peak this time.

If you do not want to do whole chalupa trip, Go in and up at Death Canyon walk all the way up and hit the highest peak you can for photos.
This is the hike in the west, death canyon in cascades out. if you do it hit static peak drop pack go up.
