I just got my HVAC certification from Lindsey-Cooper in Irving Texas...at 42 years old...getting ready for the EPA 608 certification in 2 weeks...subscribed....

I also went to that school lol..passed all my exams...(EPA). I am now a universal techinician....I will now be going to work for the Union. That is where the money is plus you learn so much. Salary after 4 years is about $32-$34 an hour

Early on in the video you said that if you do a good job, your boss will tell his boss etc.
Well that's subjective, a lot of the older workers will deliberately put down younger apprentices and make them seem incompetent to make sure they have job security and won't be replaced by a younger work force.
There's been many times where I've been blamed for things I didn't do or been given 3rd hand service jobs where other service engineers have fucked up on then tried to wash their hands of it and pass the buck onto the younger guys.
I'm not disagreeing that apprentices should work hard but they should be wary of being used as cheap labour by companies that don't care about expanding their skillset.
Im in this situation myself i fear.
if that's the case, you go to your superiors, give them examples and stick up for yourself. If they won't listen, thank them for meeting with you and continue to work hard while you look for a better company.
I'm 30 and now starting to understand the refrigerant cycle so I can get certified doing HVAC Being on your game is a habit that they told me during the ride. Hearing and watching this video so I can get it down subconsciously is what I believe will make me great with the people I work with.

Almost to my first year as a mechanical apprentice in Oklahoma! I can tell you when I first started it all seemed very hard but even though I am still doing install and sometimes it’s crappy, I love what I have learned! And I’ve lost 90 pounds in the past year from all the physical activity! Looking forward to my journeyman’s test in 2 years!!

I started at 30 too. Try to get in the field now, you may or may not get a chance since you havent completed school, but a company might see your worth if you are currently enrolled. School with actual work in the field is the best combo

I'm 29 and I'm starting out as a helper with my local HVAC company, they told me if I do well they might hire me on full time. I have ZERO experience and made sure to tell them that but I said I will do whatever it takes to learn the trade and they said to come back in March and they will give me a shot! Excited and also nervous!

Excellent advice as I come from the service side and have done a little duct work over the years. I am a retired industrial electrician and the largest problem I see in new Technicians is the lack of good hard core understanding of the basics. Hard to troubleshoot without understanding why it works like does. I learned refrigeration as young man and the man who was my teacher said you spend 8 hour, go home shower eat and pull out the book for 2 hrs. It served me a life time. That why we have so many part changers in this trade.
+Gene J Well said sir, In today's society of educated kids thinking they have to have a college degree and have white collar jobs; any advice I can give the ones who are blue collar inclined to join us and stay with us in the HVAC industry, I feel it's very important to try and relay that information to them. just seen a video where u change a compressor. Ive seen a few HVAC videos and for the most part from the professionalism of work performance motivated me to get in TH-cam and look up Fox Family ( you guys) and subscribe.
i got my certification and haven't had a HVAC job yet due to lack of actual experience. That being said im watching hvac videos of on of these apps and I'm glad í ran into yours because the app is a compilation of videos regarding hvac and not all are adherent to their duties and standards as any professional should be.

Good advice man !!! I had been working with maintenance guys they don't even have experience, doing crazy thing at work, too much cellphone or talking about Kardashian xxx movie, or doing personal stuff in your working hours etc. I was always away from them. Unfortunately , I had a supervisor like that too. Well, now I am in a better place working with good people .

I’ve been doing commercial control installation for 3 weeks now (still feel like I know absolutely nothing ) I didn’t even know how to use wire strippers my first day. Still super overwhelmed thanks for this video it did help a bit with the anxiety

🤣👍🏼 my first day we ripped out oooollllddddd hard-pipe from a crawl space. We had to re locate air handler because it was like 23 inches and wouldn’t fit where the old one was. We also had to take it over a cast iron pipe at the crawl door and of course the gap from the pipe to the floor joyce was only 19 inches 🙄 so we took it all apart and finally got it re-assembled under there and put in all new flex and she was good to go! Second day we had an equipment change out in an attic, it was 160 degrees!!! 🤣 once we got some air blowing on us felt good though! Get ready for some hard work fellas

I pretty much do all the things you talked about ,and still get belittled .it's a tough work force.i went to hvac school at 27 . Only been working full time for 1 year ,it's amazing how much more you learn in the field. I'm also interested in other trades too like plumbing and electrical.

Lotta great advice here; just getting into the trade at 35yrs old and it amazes me how these younger guys(helpers) act on the job...basically standing around smoking and playing on their phone, showing ZERO interest in what's going on, no initiative to learn, showing up late... expecting to get payed for showing up I guess.
They act annoyed when they're asked to do anything, leave trash laying around, complain... it's crazy.

Glad to hear i'm not the only one getting in to the game late, unlike some past careers that didn't pan out I actually have interest in this beyond the paycheck and my prior experience(and an Instrument/Electronics degree) have helped me hit the ground running...it's a small, family-run company(which has it's pros and cons), but they're willing to pay me while I learn so it's an amazing opportunity and I treat it as such.
I'm studying to get my EPA license, learning on the job(small family-run company), and buying tools weekly to assemble what I need to get the job done effectively and efficiently.
Might do a 'n00b' toolbag review and 'what tools I carry' video later - it'll be interesting to see how it all changes at the end of this summer or a year or two from now.

Late response on this video, but pertaining to the 1st service call with the RTU: Anytime I go out and check a system that hasn't been powered on in awhile, not knowing who worked on it last, I would ohm out the load side of the disconnect to ground, as well as the load side of contactors, and relays, along with a visual of the electrical in the unit before powering it on. Maybe something to catch that wasn't wired correctly that can be fixed before energizing the system and popping an expensive part. Just good , safe practice. Also, never assume that just because the disconnect is off, that there is no power present. I've seen where the disconnect was bypassed on 1 or more legs because it was bad but the owner was to cheap to have it replaced, or the guy working on it was to lazy to bother quoting the repair. Just my 2-cents.
I'm in my apprenticeship, and one of the guys I rode with did 4 calls and kept taking long ways trips and screwing around in-between calls, we started at 8am , I didn't get back to the shop to my car till 9:30pm, this dude spent time in between calls having conversations with the home owner of off topic situations and just kept making stops eating and taking his time on his phone. This is now my absolute pet peeve . On my second ride along I was with a different guy, who did 5 calls and start at 8am I went home at 5pm. It was interesting seeing the difference between techs.
I for sure will be the second tech on the move. I hate being in one spot.

What you say about being an apprentice is so true. I am not in HVAC but found your channel researching HVAC tools for my son - - As a senior tech in a non trade position it is frustrating when the beginner is too preoccupied with everything else besides the job. It is also important to focus in on what is being taught or required of you; flitting from thing to thing just doesn't sit well with experienced people.
He graduated a while ago and it was frustrating that he never got a position; he has his Universal EPA and OSHA certifications. All he kept hearing was "we are looking for someone with 3-5 years experience" and "you'll leave us once your trained". He tried other things (college and had a crappy FT job (a learning experience in itself)) and loved doing HVAC in High School that he is back in school relearning everything to hopefully get a job in the field. The Union has recruitment in January and he also will pursuing that.
A video on how to get that first job may be helpful as a former beginner and now a HVAC business owner.

I got my 608 universal license in the middle of April and still looking for job in dc or md! Did it take u long also and how should I go about look for a job because these internet job site like indeed its not working!
Im a ac novice thats learning commercial units on his own because i work for a really small school district. Check what i do at ag ac guy and maintenance youtube videos. basically i only had 1 year of schooling where i learned mostly out of a book. Dont go to those schools guys. You need hands on in hvac. Didnt even know how to charge my first unit that was low on refrigerant😒😰 i only had book knowledge. But keeping trying if you look for my videos i try to explain everything for guys that dont have a clue. But im still learning too.

What local do you work with? I've been with 292 and 80. We mainly do industrial. And we use a foreman to supervise the installation as it has to pass inspection.

Were you talking about the entire outdoor unit or changing the condenser coil? Changing the condenser coil is much more involved lol

+Octavio Delgado Octavio, if you are an installer on a daily basis, you and your partner are going to get in a groove. You will know your role and how your partner wants things done, in what sequence, etc. Talk to him and find out. Your condenser can be removed and replaced in around two hours. Your partner can have that furnace removed and replaced in about four hours. Its all about synchronicity though, and find a way to be efficient with your movements, tool placement, parts and materials to and from the truck. In CA we have to tape and seal all the registers and have our duct test done to prove leakage, install a programmable thermostat and make sure the return air is large enough. The best me and my partner ever did on an install was to start at 7am and finish by 1pm. Most of the time we'd finish within eight hours though, by 3:30pm. As the helper, get that condenser out and replaced as quickly as possible, get the tape and seal done in about 45 minutes depending on the size of the house, thermostat done in about ten minutes. Then if there is anything else to do, your partner and you can meet up then and get the rest done, like add the supply run or enlarge the return.
nice informative video about Hvac. I am currently dealing with low back disc issues and I am in the process of rehab for my back. My question is do you experience alot of heavy lifting of equipment, supplies that could strain your lower back ?
Absolutely. Lots of lifting shoving pushing pulling crawling climbing up and over the craziest positions you've been in. Lol. Its a pretty physical job!
The thing with me is that i really don't have much pride when it comes to working. I cant think of anything that would actually need to be done that im not willing to do. It's just knowing exactly what it is I need to do that is kind of a worry.
I'm about 4 months into online classes and I seem to be absorbing the information (like a dessicant) because im passing my exams but id be lying if i said it doesnt all seem to be a bit convoluted and complicated at times.
I work hard though so im hoping that will make up some of my kind of lack of technical what have you. Just tell me what to do and ill do it.

Brilliant advice! I'm starting hvac at 53. I'm old, stiff, partially deaf, and beginning to have cataracts. Can't believe how popular I am because I don't play on my cellphone or talk endlessly with the younger guys.

+ke xia I live in ontario, Canada where you need a gas license to install or service natural gas and propane fired equipment, which is a good start in my area after which you go for air condition apprenticeship 3 years for res. 5 for commercial meaning ac systems over 5 tons. if you live in the southern states I'm not sure you'll want to go for ac first
question, i replaced my 45uf capacitor with an 80uf until i receive the correct 1 in the mail, it seems to be running fine, cooling and all, i just dont know if thats ok to do ,?

Remember there are no experts in this field it. Takes time to. Really be good in this business don't be afraid to tackle a job. And make mistakes that's how you learn

I’m looking to go into HVAC myself. I’ve worked as a floorcare guy for ten years, and it doesn’t pay what I call a good wage. It pays what it’s worth because it’s not a job that requires much training. HVAC on the other hand is skill heavy and pays for skill heavy work. I’m nervous about it because I want to do good and it can be overwhelming for me but from all I’ve seen it comes down to being persistent, work at a good steady pace, asking questions when you don’t know, not having a big head about anything, and just being willing to learn. I know I’ll make mistakes, and get a good ribbing by the guys when I do but I’ll keep working to get it right. I sincerely appreciate these videos. Hopefully a few years down the road, I’ll be able to help someone else who’s looking to go into HVAC. I just wish I’d done this sooner. Anyway thank you again sir. This really helped me out.
